About six miles west of Larned, Kansas the Fort Larned National Historic Site preserves the 1859 military post of Fort Larned. On October 22, 1859 Captain George H. Stewart, commanding Company K of the First United States Cavalry, was sent out with his company to establish a mail escort station on the line of the Santa Fe Trail. On October 22nd he selected a site on the south bank of Pawnee Fork, eight miles from the mouth of the river and established a camp, which was first called the “Camp on Pawnee Fork.” The original structure was built of sod in the heart of Indian hunting grounds.
Today, the National Historic Site displays nine restored buildings, including officers’ quarters, barracks, a blacksmith shop, commissary and more and is one of the best examples of Indian Wars period forts. Many of the buildings include include period furnishings and the Visitor Center includes a museum, introductory slide show, library, rest rooms and a gift shop. A nature trail still provides views of wagon ruts left in the ground from the many pioneers who traveled the Santa Fe Trail.

Selectwoman Jean Harmon Assaults Town Employee - GUILTY of Class E Crime
This video, from the Town's own surveillance camera, clearly shows Buxton Selectboard Chair Jean Harmon striking a long-time town employee, Greg Heffernan, the Transfer Station Manager. We need everyone to be at the town office this Wednesday evening at 7pm for the Selectboard's public meeting to demand the Selectboard remove Jean Harmon from the board. She was convicted October 7th of the Class E crime of Disorderly Conduct. According to the Buxton Town Charter, this conviction means she is required to forfeit her position, however she has refused to comply with the Charter (listed below).
I feel strongly that her refusal to step down means it is imperative for all concerned residents in town to attend the meeting on Wednesday October 9th at 7pm to respectfully insist that our other four select board members uphold the town charter and dismiss Jean from the board. What other choice do they have? The language in the charter leaves them no room to wiggle out of this: it does not say anyone must be sentenced to serve time in prison; merely being convicted of a crime punishable by a prison term is grounds for forfeiting a seat on the select board, and this is exactly what we have based on today’s court action.
Since it seems our other Selectboard members will not uphold their duty to enforce the Charter unless we, the town residents, demand they do so, it is vital that we pack the Selectboard meeting this Wednesday evening October 9th at 7pm to demand they dismiss Jean from the board. We need too many people for them to be able to simply dismiss our request. I doubt they will allow me access to the podium again after my last time addressing them on this topic(!!), though I will try, so we need others - that being YOU ALL - to make this request, over and over, as many people as possible, so bring along more voices. PLEASE hold our elected officials accountable to enforce the town charter. If they can ignore the charter on something so clearly outlined in black and white, how can they be held accountable for anything else?
MAINE STATE STATUTES
Title 17-A: MAINE CRIMINAL CODE
Part 3:
Chapter 51: SENTENCES OF IMPRISONMENT
§1252-A
§1252. Imprisonment for crimes other than murder
1. In the case of a person convicted of a crime other than murder, the court may sentence to imprisonment for a definite term as provided for in this section, unless the statute which the person is convicted of violating expressly provides that the fine and imprisonment penalties it authorizes may not be suspended, in which case the convicted person shall be sentenced to imprisonment and required to pay the fine authorized therein. Except as provided in subsection 7, the place of imprisonment must be as follows.
A. For a Class D or Class E crime the court must specify a county jail as the place of imprisonment. [1989, c. 693, §5 (NEW).]
B. For a Class A, Class B or Class C crime the court must:
(1) Specify a county jail as the place of imprisonment if the term of imprisonment is 9 months or less; or
(2) Commit the person to the Department of Corrections if the term of imprisonment is more than 9 months. [1989, c. 693, §5 (NEW).]
C. [1995, c. 425, §2 (RP).]
[ 1995, c. 425, §2 (AMD) .]
2. The court shall set the term of imprisonment as follows:
A. In the case of a Class A crime, the court shall set a definite period not to exceed 30 years; [2003, c. 657, §10 (AMD).]
B. In the case of a Class B crime, the court shall set a definite period not to exceed 10 years; [1975, c. 499, §1 (NEW).]
C. In the case of a Class C crime, the court shall set a definite period not to exceed 5 years; [1975, c. 499, §1 (NEW).]
D. In the case of a Class D crime, the court shall set a definite period of less than one year; or [1975, c. 499, §1 (NEW).]
E. In the case of a Class E crime, the court shall set a definite period not to exceed 6 months. [1975, c. 499, §1 (NEW).]
Buxton Town Charter, Section 2.07(b)(3) on the top of p. 6 states:
(b) Forfeiture of Office. A person shall forfeit the office of Selectman if he/she:
…
(3) is convicted of a crime or offense punishable by a sentence of imprisonment for more than thirty (30) days.”
NOTE: Nowhere in the charter does it say a Selectboard member must have been sentenced to serve the prison term; rather, merely being convicted of a crime that carries the potential punishment of a prison term exceeding thirty days is grounds for forfeiting the seat. Clearly, Jean Harmon must step down at this time since the court has accepted her guilty plea to a Class E Crime which, according to state law, is punishable by a period of up to 6 months in prison.

President George H.W. Bush hosts a state dinner in honor of Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev
(31 May 1990) Academy Award-winning actors, media moguls and political luminaries joined President George H.W. Bush in honoring Mikhail and Raisa Gorbachev with a glittering evening of Maine lobster and opera arias. As the guests settled into the White House's State Dining Room for the capital's biggest social event of the year, the two president praised one another warmly for the tone of their summit talks. In his formal toast, Bush lauded the Soviet president for creating within the Soviet Union a commitment to change. For his part, Gorbachev said the days are gone when the Soviet Union considered the United States an enemy. Gorbachev, wearing his glasses and speaking somberly through most of the toast, held out hope that this summit meeting would yield the biggest results of any previous Soviet-U.S. summit.

200 Clarendon St., Boston (formerly John Hancock Tower) with JR art installation
The iconic Boston landmark, the John Hancock Tower, built and repaired in the early to mid seventies was acquired by Boston Properties. While Bostonians will probably call it by it's former name rather than 200 Clarendon, another clue to it's new ownership was the art installation by French artist JR which appeared quietly on the West side of the monolith in Sept. 2015.
Roving the Red Planet: Five Years with Curiosity on Mars - Aileen Yingst
Dr. R. Aileen Yingst, a senior scientist at the Planetary Science Institute, was the guest presenter at the Skidompha Chat on March 20 2018.
Since August 6, 2012, the Curiosity rover has been exploring Gale Crater on Mars. From the mudflats of Yellowknife Bay to the dunes of Ogunquit Beach to the foothills and ridges of Mt. Sharp, the rover has charted new and incredible territory, revealing a red planet that may once have been habitable. Dr. R. Aileen Yingst, the deputy principal investigator of the rover's Mars Hand Lens Imager, talked about where our Curiosity has taken us.
The Planetary Science Institute is in Tucson, Arizona, but Dr. Yingst works remotely from her home in Brunswick, Maine. Funded by NASA, Yingst is responsible for the Mars Hand Lens Imager camera or MAHLI, one of the dozen or so cameras that has been attached to an arm of the Curiosity Mars rover. Yingst and her team plan Curiosity’s movements one sol ahead of time (sol is the name for a Mars “day”, which is approximately 37 minutes longer than a day on Earth).
MAHLI is such a powerful instrument that it can send images of individual grains of sand on the Mars surface. Yingst’s job is to photograph and analyze the planet’s geology for clues that might tell scientists whether Mars could have supported life. Mainers will recognize many of the names from Acadia National Park that Yingst and her team have given to Mars geologic features: Cadillac Mountain, Bar Harbor, Thunder Hole, among others. A Civil War buff, Yingst has named a Mars rock for General Joshua L. Chamberlain. Perhaps in the future there could be a Mars feature named Damariscotta or Skidompha!
In 2015, Dr. Yingst was elected a Fellow of the Geological Society of America for her significant research in planetary geology, leadership roles in multiple planetary missions, work in training the next generation of planetary geoscientists through a decade of leadership in NASA’s Space Grant Program, and for her work in contributing to the public awareness of planetary geoscience. She received her Ph.D. and Sc.M. in Geological Sciences from Brown University and completed her undergraduate work at Dartmouth.

Bob Emmons & Lee Emmons Wreaths Across America Project Feb 10, 2017
On February 10, 2017, Skidompha Library and Chats with Champions welcomed Bob Emmons and his son Lee Emmons, who related their often touching and sometime humorous experiences as participants in the 2016 Wreaths Across America Project.
Since the early 1990s, Morrill Worcester and his Worcester Wreath Co. of Harrington, Maine have been honoring U.S. veterans by donating, decorating, delivering and laying wreaths on their graves.
It began as a small gesture of thanks to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, and this annual tribute has grown to include wreath-layings across the country and a National Wreaths Across America day.
As participants in the Wreaths Across America program, Bob and Lee traveled as part of the convoy from Portland to Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, across from our nation's capitol. The Lincoln County participants included veterans and their families, a Gold Star mother, and a World War II veteran. Bob is a decorated Vietnam veteran. At each stop along their route, which crosses several states and takes one week to complete, Wreaths Across America emphasizes the importance of remembering fallen heroes, honoring those who serve and teaching children about the sacrifices made by veterans and their families. Upon arrival, they were part of the group of more than 44,000 people to help place 245,000 wreaths at the Arlington Cemetery in December of 2016 — one for each marker in the cemetery. According to Wreaths Across America, 1.2 million remembrance wreaths were placed at 1,228 locations nationwide.
