Billy (Raglan) stormed to his second victory claiming national title after a near flawless performance in the final of the Open Men's Division at the 2012 Hyundai National Surfing Championships held at Piha Beach, Auckland today (Saturday 21st January).
The young 22 year old surfer is ranked 79th in the world and New Zealand's third highest ranked surfer internationally. He is one of but a few in the world that managed to claim a victory over 11 times world champion Kelly Slater in 2011.
He won his first national title in 2010 at Gisborne in a similar fashion after getting a massive lead on his opponents and never relenting.
It is good to start the year winning a national title, I am going overseas soon so it is good for my confidence and everything like that but yeah, at the moment, a national title, I can't believe it at the moment said Stairmand.
Thandi Durham -- Tipene (Taranaki) claimed her first Open Women's Division title in style today posting a 5.40 on her last wave to jump from third to first in the dying seconds of the final.
This is one of my biggest goals that I have ever achieved said Durham - Tipene.
I have been living at Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast and seeing the likes of Mick Fanning, Tyler Wright, all the best surfers, surfing everyday, it is pretty hard not to improve over there she said obviously happy to get her last wave and show how much she has improved.
Durham -- Tipene's husband Bachelor won the Peter Byers award for the most outstanding performance at the event. He was awarded the prize for exceptional surfing throughout the whole week. I am stoked for Bach my husband as well. Winning the Peter Byers 'Most Outstanding Performance' award is pretty special. He was bummed he didn't pick up a title but I know he will be gunning for it next year. she added.
Placing second in the final was Mischa Davis (Piha) who led for over 20 minutes but came up short on the final hooter. Davis scored 8.60 to Durham -- Tipene's 9.43. The two oldest of the finalists fended off the challenge of the younger girls with Ella Williams (WGM) finishing in third and Jayda Martin -- Fitzharris (Gis) finishing fourth.
Tane Wallis won the Under 18 Boys Division in the challenging low tide conditions. After Elliot Paerata -- Reid (Piha) opened the final with a 7.0 point ride, Wallis came back into contention with rides of 7.83 and 6.03 to control the final. Wallis then went to work protecting his lead first watching over Paerata -- Reid then Ben Poulter (Rag) after he came back in to contention late in the final. Paerata -- Reid eventually finished the final in second place ahead of Dune Kennings (WGM) in third and Ben Poulter (Rag) in fourth.

New Zealand Honeymoon || Auckland, Victoria Park, Ponsonby Central, and Sky Tower
November 1-4, 2019
Welcome to the first video of my vlog series on my 3 week adventure around New Zealand with my new husband, Owen! Make sure to answer my question of the day at the bottom of this description to help me get to know you better! :)
Owen and I flew to Auckland, New Zealand (not the easiest flights from Seattle), and stayed in Ponsonby which is located on the North Island.
We woke up and ate at the tastiest cafe before walking to downtown Auckland through Victoria Park and heading to the Sky Tower.
We drank wine at the top of the Sky Tower and watched a stranger do the Sky Tower Bungy. Hard pass for me.
We ate an incredible dinner in Ponsonby Central and called it an early night! Jet lag and all...
We even got a parking ticket! What a day.

New Zealand Honeymoon || Bethells Beach (Te Henga) and Hamilton - We got our camper van!
November 7, 2019
I went for one last soak in our AirBnb hot tub before leaving and heading to Bethells Beach, also known as Te Henga. But we couldn't stay for long because we had to return our rental car and pick up our home for the next 2 weeks! That's right...we rented a camper van!
I successfully drove on the left side of the road for the first time and now I am having a hard time adjusting to the right side of the road...thanks a lot New Zealand...
But due to poor weather ahead, we had to cancel our plans in the Bay of Islands in order to attempt hiking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. We spent many hours trying to find a place with Wi-Fi so we could plan our last days on the North Island. And if you watch long enough, you will see that became quite difficult.
Once our errands were done, we drove South to a town called Hamilton and had some good beer and food at a place called Good George. We then made it to our first camp site of the trip and were so excited for our first night in our precious van, Vinnie!
Tomorrow, we go to Hobbiton!!

QUESTION OF THE DAY:
Would you ever live in a van full-time?
Bay of Islands, New Zealand (Version 1)
It's 2018, that means it's Summer anddddd sooo, time for a new video! It was a busy time for us at the end of last year so we didn't really get to prepare for this year's trip. It was a last minute planning but thank goodness we were able to go ahead with it after a number of hiccups.
The places we went to that were featured in this video were:
- Matauri Bay (Known for its blue ocean and white sand)
- Mangonui Fish Shop (The best fish and chips in NZ)
- Abbey Caves (Although we did not film inside as it was too dangerous to climb down and film at the same time; safety first! We're not ready to die just to film)
- Whangaroa (where we stayed)
If you're looking for a cheap place to stay around Bay of Islands area (or towns near it) I would suggest going to Sunseeker's lodge (via booking.com). It is a budget motel but its got great views, free spa and really cheap accommodation cost! The host is very accommodating and friendly too so that's a plus! Total cost per night, per person was $44.50 NZD.
Music used:
All activities were free. Of course you can go to Paihia to do some paid activities but since we were on a tight budget, we had to make do with the free stuff!
Other things to note:
Go buy ice cream from Cellini's Ice cream. It is the best ice cream in town! (or maybe New Zealand? Who knows but just buy some to try it!)
Thinking which one to choose between Abbey Caves and Waitomo? Here's something to think about:
Waitomo has guided tours and are probably the number one place for tourists but of course, they're not free. Abbey Caves on the other hand are free and just as spectacular. HOWEVER, no safety checks were done in the place and you enter at your own risk. That being said, it can get quite scary and wouldn't recommend it if you're travelling alone. There are big, slippery climbs you need to climb up and down on PLUS getting wet. So there's really so many things you need to consider. Is it worth going there because it's free?
However. an alternative cave I can suggest is Waipu caves. It is a short walk to the cave and probably would be more accessible.
That's about it. If you have any more questions, feel free to send me an email or pop it in the comment down below!
