The Ohara Naked Festival (Ohara Hadaka Matsuri) is a heroic event of strength and courage. Tide stepping (shiofumi) is the high point on the beach of the Pacific Ocean. Young men wade the mikoshi into the warm south current heaving and shaking, sometimes submerging them in the sea. This ritual is a form of purification (misogi) and a prayer for a good catch and bumper crops. The rowdier, the better the gods are pleased.
The role of mikoshi is to be a vehicle for moving the spirit of god to the sea from all the local areas. The ritual is also called down the beach festival (hamaorisai) and it is also a prayer for the fertility of grains. As soon as the ritual finishes on the beach, all the mikoshi return to their original shrines, passing through their hometowns praying also for the well-being, good health and safety of the family.

五穀豊穣、大漁祈願を願い十数基の神輿が一斉に海へとかつぎこまれ、もみあう汐ふみでは 勇ましく、雄々しく、神輿は海の中を駆け巡り投げ上げられます。
夕闇のせまる頃、商店街は全ての神輿がねり歩き祭り一色となります。
そして神輿は高く掲げられ、別れを惜しむ大別れへ・・・。
海の男たちの情熱と優しさの両面を十分に感じることのできるこの祭りには熱心なファンも多く、毎年多くの観衆でにぎわいます。
