Visiting Kaikoura Seal Colony in Ohau Point, South Island | New Zealand 2019
Interested to visit wildlife in New Zealand? We decided to head the seal colony on our 2nd day. This was also our first time in #kaikoura which is famous for their seals and dolphins. While the roads are being repaired, we were not able to access the waterfalls that had baby seals so we decided to head to the seal colony at Ohau Point.

Baby Seal Colony - Ohau Point, Kaikoura, New Zealand
Baby seals playing in the freshwater waterfall at Ohau point, near Kaikoura, in New Zealand - I filmed these baby seals at Kaikoura, in New Zealand, on one of my painting adventures. Amazingly, they travel from the safety of the New Zealand fur seal breeding colony, which is on the beach, travelling up the tiny Ohau stream and inland for about a mile or so, to get to this magical pool and waterfall. Baby Seal Pups - Ohau Waterfall Kaikoura New Zealand
Every year seal pups are born on the coast around Kaikoura, the coastal outcrops, nooks and crannies, provides an excellent breeding habitat and protection for young pups from storms that hit the coast.
The pups are born in November, and travel up the stream from April onwards. They remain at the pool for several days and then return to the coast to feed from their mother's milk. The mothers head out to sea on foraging trips, for periods of one to 20 days at sea, then return to the shore to feed their pups.
This video was taken in the later part of the year as the seal pups started to venture out into the wild ocean
VLOG NEW ZEALAND : Seal Colony at Kaikoura Ohau Point
On our last day on the south island of New Zealand, we visited the Ohau Point Fur Seal Colony. Ohau Point is about 20 km north of Kaikoura, and one of the best spots in the area to watch New Zealand fur seals do their thing: laying around, doing nothing. It can only stay that way if we don’t chase the fur seals away, so keep your distance and observe them in a non-intrusive way.
