LIFE'S a BEACH WHAKATANE NZ

Ohope Beach is a beach in the eastern Bay of Plenty, on the northeast coast of the North Island of New Zealand, six kilometres east and over the hill, from Whakatane.

It is a popular holiday destination during the New Zealand summer, and features several kilometres of safe swimming beaches. The western end of the beach, named 'West End' is a popular surfing area during the summer and Christmas period.

Coastlands Beach is located just before Whakatane, taking a left hand turn before going over the Whakatane bridge. It is a great place for landbased fishing and for putting the kontiki longline out. Snapper, kahawai, trevally and yellowtail kingfish are the main fish species caught here. Also an ideal place to go for a relaxing walk with the family and the dog.

One Double X News & Weather - Whakatane/Galatea, New Zealand (1989)

DESCRIPTION
- Recorded in January of 1989, One Double X's news intro (minus the bulletin itself!) followed by the weather. The announcer is Matt Mollgaard.

This news intro was used by One Double X from 1986 up until the early 1990s when they started using the remixed version of the same theme that first appeared on 99 Hauraki FM. Incidentally, the 80s era version featured in this clip also originated at Radio Hauraki. It was also used by Radio Windy, Energy FM, Radio Avon and Foveaux Radio, among others.

BRIEF STATION HISTORY
- 1XX (One Double X) was launched at 10:30am on 30 June 1971, making it the fourth privately owned commercial station in New Zealand. 1XX broadcast on 1240kHz from its main transmitter at Awakeri, near Whakatane. A repeater was also set up to service Murupara and Galatea on 1110kHz, although this was later adjusted to 1240kHz.

During the 1970s, 1XX was also known as Coastline Radio, Coastline 1-2-4, 1-2-4 Double X and Coastline Double X.

In 1978, 1XX's frequency was adjusted from 1240 to 1242kHz.

On 12 December 1988 at 12:12pm, 1XX made the long-awaited conversion to FM. 1XX FM began broadcasting on 90.5MHz from Putauaki (Mt. Edgecumbe) which provided extensive coverage across the eastern Bay Of Plenty and beyond.

The station's AM transmitters at Whakatane and Galatea were retained and continued to simulcast the new FM station. Some special interest programmes were also broadcast exclusively on 1242kHz.

On 6 February 1989, 1XX FM began relaying its programme into Ohope Beach on 93.0MHz.

In 2011, 1XX's Ohope Beach frequency was adjusted from 93.0 to 92.9MHz.
