The Usuki Stone Buddhas (Usuki Sekibutsu) are statues of various Buddhas sculpted into a cliff about five kilometers southwest of Usuki's central city. The Oita Prefectural Museum of History (Ōita Kenritsu Rekishi Hakubutsukan) is an excellent museum to learn Oita's history, culture and key attractions. It is located in Usa City at the base of the Kunisaki Peninsula, just a few kilometers away from the Usa Shrine.
At the center of the museum stands a must-see life-size reconstruction of Fukiji Temple's main hall. In stark contrast to the actual hall whose interior and object of worship have faded in color over the centuries, the reconstruction show the splendor of how the hall's interior looked like when it was first constructed more than 800 years ago. The museum also showcases replicas of the Usuki Stone Buddhas and the Kumano Magaibutsu Stone Buddhas.
Facility Information:
Hours: 9:00 to 17:00 (last entry at 16:30)
Closed: Mondays (or following day if Monday is a national holiday), December 28 to January 4
Admission: 310 yen
Level of English: Moderate (good English pamphlet)
Access Information:
Because of poor public transportation service, it would be better to use taxi or retal car.
A taxi ride takes about 20 minutes and 2000 yen from Usa Station or about 10 minutes and 1500 yen from Yanagigaura Station. Usa Shrine is located about five kilometers south of the museum. A taxi ride between the two attractions costs around 1300 yen.

Japanese Bamboo Art: The Abbey Collection
For centuries, artists and craftsmen in japan have carved, woven or transformed the bamboo plant to create a variety of commodities and art pieces.Japanese bamboo art, with its refined beauty and technical sophistication, has been little known in the west until recent years.
On display until Feb 4th, 2018, a large scale exhibition titled ”japanese bamboo art: the abbey collection” is on view at the metropolitan museum of art, highlighting key stages in the modern history of japanese bamboo art, and offers audiences a rare opportunity to see a comprehensive selection of these exquisite works.
Japan's Kansai region has strong cultural influences from China due to their geographic closeness. In relation to bamboo art, which goes back to the 15th century, Chinese bamboo baskets were imported to the Kansai region and were used in tea ceremonies and buddhist rituals in additional to practical daily uses.
Japanese artists in Kansai learned how to imitate chinese bamboo techniques like plaiting and even adopted the shapes of Chinese porcelains and jars when creating their own baskets.
Straight, durable, and able to withstand heavy winds-- these properties of bamboo symbolize virtues like uprightness and loyalty in Chinese culture
In Japanese culture, the values that bamboo symbolizes are also quite similar to the ones in Chinese culture.
Marcel Wanders - Eurasian Garden at OITA (2015)
Inflated and rooted by weights to be moved by the carefree, passing wind. Breathing, lively and free. The five meter tall balloon installation depicting floral painterly masks that opened April 24th, 2015 at the Oita Prefectural Art Museum continues to please.
Watch and discover the deep meaning of the design concept behind this irreverent, two-way union of customs and cultures. “Moving effortlessly like breath, this installation proclaims the possibility for the acceptance of thoughts and ideas that originate from distance shores”, Marcel Wanders said.
Festival of Bamboo Lights - Japan HD 2014
Chiku Raku means “Fun with Bamboo”. Chiku Raku is a festival held every November in the small mountain town of Taketa in Oita, Japan. It is the biggest annual event held in Taketa which means “bamboo field” so named after its bamboo covered hillsides and bamboo craft.
More than 20,000 lanterns are lit in this festival. The lanterns are made of bamboos with candles inside it. The bamboo lanterns are scattered all around the old streets and stone staircases of Taketa and are arranged in a manner to spell “OITA” making the ordinary town of Taketa look like a fantasy world that draws more than 100,000 visitors from all around the world.
The biggest staircase that leads to a shrine past a set of 12 stone Buddhist monks (approximately 1000 years old) is paid special attention and beautifully decorated with bamboo lights.
This festival is about 30 years old and was started to check uncontrolled growth of the bamboo groves. It is celebrated in a very simple manner by serving traditional festive foods.
