【JAPAN】 Saitama Prefectural Museum of the Sakitama Ancient Burial Mounds 【公式】埼玉県立さきたま史跡の博物館(英語版)
Since opening in 1969, the Sakitama Ancient Burial Mounds Museum (formerly known as the Sakitama Museum) has been actively involved in the preservation and maintenance of the Sakitama Kofun Cluster, a nationally designated historical site consisting of ancient burial mounds, and related projects. To restore and preserve what the Sakitama Kofun Cluster looked like when it was first constructed, the Museum researches and collects materials regarding the historical site and houses many of the artifacts discovered during excavations. Two categories of artifacts are introduced here: some of the burial accessories that were discovered at the main site (the burial mound) of the Inariyama Kofun and later designated as national treasures, and a particular type of earthenware called haniwa, figures characteristic of the Kofun Period that were arranged on top of the burial mounds or in rows along nearby ditches and moats. These artifacts are extremely valuable resources in understanding the ancient history of Japan.

Japan Trip: Embracing Tranquility at Usa Shrine, Oita Prefecture, Kunisaki, Oita023
Usa Shrine (宇佐神宮) is located at the base of the Kunisaki Peninsula in Oita Prefecture. Built in the 8th Century, it is dedicated to Hachiman, the god of archery and war.
The Hachiman-zukuri style of architecture is reflected in Usa Shrine. The shrine’s main hall (a designated national treasure) and another hall are connected by same roof, making the two halls into a single building. In addition, the two halls are surrounded by a covered corridor so it is difficult for “outsiders” to have a clear view into the halls.
Usa Shrine’s grounds contain an upper shrine complex, a lower shrine complex, a treasure hall, a couple of ponds and several auxiliary shrine buildings. Typically visitors enter the grounds through either its north or west entrance. Outside the north entrance are many small stores selling local souvenirs and other products.
The north entrance leads visitors to the Omotesando, the main shrine approach, where they will pass under the big vermilion torii gate to enter the shrine’s grounds. Visitors will see the treasure hall on the right. The treasure hall contains different cultural artifacts exhibits. Of particular significance is the ceremonial percussion instrument with a peacock emblem which is a designated national treasure.
Treasure Hall
Hours: 9:00 to 16:00
Closed: Tuesdays (or the following day if Tuesday is a national holiday)
Admission: 300 yen
From the west entrance, visitors will see a beautiful bride with a thatched roof known as Kurehashi. Unfortunately, the gates to the bridge is closed and only opened once every ten years during a festival. From the west shrine approach, visitors can walk to the Omotesando, the main shrine approach, while viewing the large pond with lotus plants. In addition to the lotus plants, visitors will notice a structure in the center of the lake. The structure is a Noh stage.
The upper shrine complex at the top of the hill consists of three main halls which are dedicated to Hachiman (Emperor Ojin), to his mother (Empress Jingu) and to his wife (Hime Okami). The lower shrine complex at the base of the hill also has three main halls dedicated to the same three deities. However, it is believed the halls in the upper shrine complex are more important than the lower shrine complex.

Japan Travel: Matsumae Castle Matsumaehan Yashiki History museum Hokkaido57
Matsumae (松前) is a former castle town just west of Cape Shirakami(白神岬),which is the southernmost point of Hokkaido. There is only 20 kilometers across the Tsugaru Strait from Aomori. Matsumae was the northern limit of Japan during the Edo Period and the sole feudal fief on the otherwise wild, untamed frontier of Hokkaido. The thriving, 30,000 person town attracted merchants engaged in the shipping trade, and was protected by a garrison at Matsumae Castle, which was the only Japanese style castle to have been built on Hokkaido.
Built on a hillside advantage point, Matsumae Castle cemented a foothold on Hokkaido from where to use the island's abundant natural resources. Toward the end of the Edo Period, the castle was equipped with cannon to counter the threat of foreign ships. As with many Japanese castles, Matsumae Castle's original keep was destroyed some times over the centuries. The current three story high structure is a modern concrete reconstruction from the early 1960s which houses a local history museum displaying a collection of artifacts of the local Matsumae clan, including some items related to the Ainu people.

Autumn Walk to Hakubakei (Usuki, Oita Prefecture, Japan)
A friend suggested we go to Hakubakei in Usuki which is a little lake that is great for seeing the autumn foliage. While I think we missed the pick of the leaf viewing, it was still really pretty and the fact that we went on a rainy day made it even more.
Leaf viewing seems to be a legit thing in Japan. That's pretty interesting to me since in Canada, yea the autumn leaves are pretty, but it's not like we would ever go out just to see some leaves.
Anyways, I hope you enjoyed seeing this little autumn walk.
Much love and happy travels

Japan Trip: Reimeikan Museum for history lover interesting exhibits Kagoshima, Japan
The Reimeikan Museum (literally meaning in Japanese, dawn of a new age museum) is dedicated to local history and culture. On three roomy floors it gives a wide various exhibits that cover the span of Kagoshima's history from ancient to modern times. There are a few interesting models, like a large diorama of downtown Kagoshima at the beginning of the Showa Period (1926 to1989) and a small scale model of a village from the middle ages.
The museum was built on the former site of the local castle, known as Tsurumaru or Kagoshima Castle, and is surrounded by parts of the former moat and stone walls. The museum and castle ruins are situated at the base of Mount Shiroyama, which literally means castle mountain in Japanese.
Near the museum there are a few cultural attractions and other museums. One of the most popular is a statue of the local hero Saigo Takamori, who was a leader from the Meiji Restoration of the late 1860s. it is believed that Saigo have died in combat on Shiroyama mountain.

USA city JAPAN
Usa (宇佐市 Usa-shi) is a city located in Ōita Prefecture, Japan. Usa is notable for being the location of the Usa Jingū, the head shrine of all of Hachiman shrines in Japan. Nearby is the Ōita Prefectural Museum of History.
Its pronounced oosa! its not an extreamly exciting place to visit. However living here has its charms. I would recomend people keep going till they get to Beppu. Usa is about a 50 min walk from the train station and buses are few and far between! If you are driving however its a place to visit. The castle ruins are something to see.
