A short video tour of OJUKHEON MUNICIPAL MUSEUM, in beautiful Gangneung, South Korea. Ojukheon is the birthplace (in 1536) and home of the Confucian scholar, politician, and reformer YI YULGOK, and his mother, SHIN SIAMDANG, and accomplished artist and calligraphist. Both are revered in Korean Culture.

Revered as the birthplace of the paragon of Korean womanhood, Sin Saimdang (1504–51), and her son, the philosopher and government official Yi Yulgok (1536–84), this complex contains one of the oldest surviving Joseon-dynasty homes. The sprawling space has the feel of an elegant park, with buildings nestled amid punctiliously maintained gardens, lotus pools and the black-stemmed bamboo groves for which the property is named.

During Chuseok, the Korean thanksgiving, we decided to head to Gangneung for the holiday! Staying for around three days, we explored all things east of Seoul, from the Ojukheon House, to the famous BTS bus stop on Jumunjin Beach, and of course, the amazing food!

Ojukheon House [강원도 오죽헌]
Ojukheon, one of Gangwon-do's tourist attractions, is the house where Yi Yul-gok, a Joseon Dynasty scholar, was born in Jukheon-dong, Gangneung, Gangwon-do. The garden is full of porridge, so I named it after it. The official name of the treasure is 'Gangneung Ojukheon'.

강원도의 관광 명소중 하나인 오죽헌은 강원도 강릉시 죽헌동에 있는, 조선시대 대학자인 이율곡이 태어난 집. 뜰 안에 오죽이 있어 이 이름을 붙였다. 보물 정식 명칭은 ‘강릉 오죽헌’이다.

Ojukheon – a place of Yulgon Yi yi and Shin saimdang
We are visiting Ojukheon. A birth place and residential place of Yulgok Yi yi and the great mother of the nation Shin Saimdang. It is located 10minutes away from the Gangneung Olympic park where ice sports will be held for Pyeongchang Winter Olympics 2018.
Special notes to two people is that the first time that the family are imprinted on the notes during the same time and for that it is on the Guinness world record. Together with the famous café strips and Gyuengpodae pavilion, it is most popular place to visit in the province.

I had the opportunity to visit Korea two months ago, specifically touring around Gangwon Province (Gangwon-do) where the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics will be held at.
Gangwon-do is an up and coming province to go around when you are in Korea, specifically areas such as Gangneung and PyeongChang are two major hotspots that are absolutely beautiful for travellers.

▶ Joseon women who faced gender discrimination
At the onset of the Joseon era， significant social changes took place. Joseon adopted Confucianism from China and became a male－oriented， patriarchal society， in which women′s activities were restricted not only in society， but also in culture and art， while their role as homemakers was emphasized even more.
Some of the Joseon women still managed to display their artistic talents despite the repression. One of them was Shin Saimdang from the scenic city of Gangneung， Gangwon－do Province. As a child， she liked to spend time observing flowers and insects in her garden， and drawing them. Her artistic genre called ″chochungdo，″ meaning ″grass and insects，″ represents her love for petty objects， which in turn represents Korean personality.
Another famous female artist from the Joseon period was Heo Nanseolheon， who at age 7 surprised everyone by writing a perfect poem. But her happy childhood ended when she got married. After the return of her brother to his hometown， the death of her both children and the demise of her family， her life turned into a nightmare. She found solace in poetry and drawing. Before her death at the age of 27 she asked that all her works be burned.
▶Genre paintings about social changes
King Jeongjo of the late Joseon period was highly lauded as a wise king. He implemented diverse policies to enrich the lives of grassroots people. Always being interested in the lives of ordinary people， he asked one of his court painters to draw them.
Through his elaborate depiction of people′s lives， King Jeongjo was able to improve the lives of the public. Kim Hong－do was more than an artist； he was a journalist who recorded the lives of people in the Joseon era.
Another Joseon painter who created excellent genre paintings and was compared with Kin Hong－do was artist Shin Yun－bok. He mostly drew women in revealing clothes using bold colors and techniques. Shin Yun－bok harshly criticized their immorality by portraying them side by side with ″gisaeng，″ or court entertainers.
Joseon artists who portrayed their era created their unique worlds of art by depicting the lives of people from their own perspectives. Their works continue to inspire modern－day artists who breathe a new life into their works by blending the past with the present.
▶ 남성 중심의 조선 시대에 갇혀 살아야 했던 여성들
고려시대가 지고 조선 시대로의 변환이 이뤄지면서 가장 논란이 일었던 것은 사회 체계의 변화이다. 중국의 영향을 받아 유교로 바뀌게 되고， 이로 인해 남성 위주의 가부장 체제가 조선시대에 들어서게 되다. 여성의 사회활동뿐 아니라 문화예술 활동마저 좁아졌으며 집에서 가정을 꾸리는 역할에 종속되었다.
억압된 여성의 삶에서도 미처 숨기지 못한 예술가로써의 혼은 피어난다. 한국의 강원도 강릉시. 천혜의 경치를 자랑하는 이 곳에 한국의 현모양처로 추앙받는 신사임당이 있다.
어렸을 때부터 주변의 꽃과 곤충을 관찰하며 이를 그대로 그림 속에 표현 하였다. 신사임당의 대표작품인 초충도는 풀과 곤충을 의미하는 것으로， 하찮은 사물들을 자세히 살펴보고 사랑했던 그녀의 마음씨와， 한국인의 성품이 그대로 드러난다.
신사임당과 함께 강릉 경포대를 두고 맞닿은 곳에 조선을 대표하는 또 다른 여류 예술가가 존재했다.7살의 나이에 완벽한 시를 지어 주변을 깜짝 놀라게 했던 천재 소녀인 허난설헌. 행복했던 유년시절은 시집을 가면서 비극으로 치닫는다.
그 속에서 오빠의 귀향과 연달은 달과 아들의 죽음， 가문의 몰락은 그녀를 궁지로 몰아넣는다. 그녀에게 남은 것은 시와 그림뿐.. 27
