Drought in The Okavango Delta and Maun? | Dry Rivers | Botswana YouTuber | Sekgabo Seselamarumo
Hello! Thank you for watching this video.
Here I share about the water crisis that is currently being faced in the North West of Botswana, that is Maun and The Okavango Delta. I share what I saw during my short vacation up in the Delta and when I went to our cattle-post (farm) in Samedupi as well as being at Maun for my school holidays.
I have been seeing pictures on Facebook about The Thamalakane River in Maun drying out but it didn't really sink in until I saw it with my own eyes on how much the river had dried up in 7 months. Personally I feel we are experiencing drought right now. Climate change and global warming are hitting us hard and we need to take action!
Let's talk below in the comment section.

2 days in Maun, Botswana. An amazing African adventure
I had the great pleasure of visiting the wonderful country of Botswana. It is such a welcoming country with friendly people, amazing wildlife and superb attractions.
I got to spend two wonderful days in the northern village of Maun on the Okavango Delta where you can glide through pristine waterways on a morkoro and observe wildlife in its natural habitat.
I went on a midday game walk which meant there were less animals to see as many were sleeping, hidden from the harsh midday sun. But I still got to see zebra, hippos, donkeys, cows, crocodiles, spotted tree frogs, wilderbeest, and deer. And I had a sip of the sweet Okavango waters.
I stayed at the Old Bridge Backpackers ( and it was a magical place to stay. Great tent. Excellent bar. Good food. And a mighty big fig tree to laze under by the river and daydream.
I can't wait to get back to Africa. I love it!

The Boteti River !!!
The Boteti River’ (also Botletle River or Botletli) is a natural watercourse in Botswana that derives flow from the core Okavango Delta through the Thamalakane River in Maun.
In the rainy season the Boteti discharges to the Makgadikgadi Pans. bringing that area alive with seasonal activity and high biological productivity. In the dry season the Boteti is particularly important to provide wildlife an area to congregate, since most seasonal ponds and drainages are devoid of water.
The Boteti stretches from Ngamiland to the main Boteti District where it is used to fill the Mopipi Dam, which is important to the many diamond mines of the area, particularly the Orapa diamond mine.

A Day in the Okavango Delta
Considered one of nature's masterpieces, the Okavango Delta is one of Africa's truly great wildernesses. A World Heritage Site, this vast and virtually untouched freshwater wetland lies at the heart of Botswana's arid Kalahari Desert and supports an abundance of wildlife within a setting of dazzling natural beauty.
We take you on a typical day’s safari in the Delta. Flying in to your lodge from Maun, you can appreciate the network of oxbow lakes and islands that make up the Okavango. Your first game drive – from the airstrip to your camp – may afford you sightings of everything from spotted hyena to rhino and elephant. Lunch is taken on the water, and your afternoon passes on a classic mokoro (or traditional dugout canoe) ride that allows you to drink in the spectacular sunset.
Comprising the Moremi Game Reserve and numerous private wildlife concessions, the Okavango Delta is home to huge numbers of elephant, buffalo, lion, hippo, giraffe and zebra plus shy antelope like tsessebe and sitatunga. A predator’s paradise, the Okavango is a world-famous stronghold for leopard, lion and wild dog as well as many rare and unusual mammal and bird species - if it's wildlife you want, an Okavango Delta safari will deliver. Look out for honey badgers, hippos and Pel’s fishing owls.
Yet despite its wild nature, the Okavango Delta is surprisingly accessible (there are short-haul direct flights from both Cape Town and Johannesburg in South Africa) and you'll certainly get to see it close up: go on guided game drives, nature walks, mokoro (canoe) and boat trips during your safari in the Okavango Delta - it's a destination with a wide range of safari activities and features some of Africa's most luxurious lodges and camps.
Romantics will love the intimate, exclusive nature of its remote fly-in lodges and an Okavango Delta honeymoon is the natural choice for those seeking undiluted romance in beautiful locations. Moreover, easy combinations with Botswana's other wildlife hotspots such as Chobe National Park make the Okavango Delta an ideal destination for safari aficionados and nature photographers.

Animals face drought in Botswana's Okavango | AFP
Cattle, hippos and elephants compete for water as drought affects the Okavango Delta in Botswana. According to farmers in the area, the government has promised to pump water into the delta in an effort to save the animals and the farmers' livelihood but they are concerned this will just lead to more mud.
Boat trip in Okavango Delta, Botswana
Music:
One of the best ways to explore Okavango Delta is to take a boat trip through it's waterways. It allows a much more intimate experience with it's inhabitants, like hippos, crocodiles, elephants, red lechwe and, of course, the many birds that make this their home. We went on a boat trip from Okavango River Lodge, by Maun, passed the Buffalo Fence and on to the Chief's Island, and back. It was an amazing experience and one that I would like to repeat.
