Okayama Castle ( 岡山城 )

Okayama Castle was constructed in 1597 by daimyo Hideie Ukita. The black siding on the walls of the castle tower gave the castle in those days a distinctive appearance. The current tower is a restoration built in 1966. The interior of the castle has been made into a museum where you can also try on some kimono for free.

Japan Trip - Autumn in Okayama Castle and Korakuen Garden (岡山城, 後楽園 - 紅葉)
Few days ago we went to Oakayama city by shinkansen. Oakayama is the birth place of the famous Momotaro or the peach boy who defeated local demons with his animal friends. Apart from Momotaro we saw the very beautiful autumn leaves of Korakuen Garden (後楽園) and Okayama castle.

Okayama is the capital city of its namesake prefecture, in western Japan. It’s known for the 16th-century Okayama Castle, dubbed “Crow Castle” for its black exterior, and for Korakuen, an iconic formal garden.
The Hayashibara Museum of Art shows East Asian art and artifacts. The Okayama Prefectural Museum of Art displays regional works. To the west, 15th-century Kibitsu-jinja Shrine features a long, covered walkway.

Okayama, Japan - Okayama Castle (2019)
Okayama Castle (岡山城 Okayama-jō) is a Japanese castle in the city of Okayama in Okayama Prefecture in Japan. The main tower was completed in 1597, destroyed in 1945 and replicated in concrete in 1966. Two of the watch towers survived the bombing of 1945 and are now listed by the national Agency for Cultural Affairs as Important Cultural Properties.
In stark contrast to the white Egret Castle of neighboring Himeji, Okayama Castle has a black exterior, earning it the nickname Crow Castle (烏城 U-jō) or castle of the black bird. (The black castle of Matsumoto in Nagano is also known as Crow Castle, but it is karasu-jō in Japanese.)
Today, only a few parts of Okayama Castle's roof (including the fish-shaped-gargoyles) are gilded, but prior to the Battle of Sekigahara the main keep also featured gilded roof tiles, earning it the nickname Golden Crow Castle (金烏城 Kin U-jō).
Okayama (岡山市 Okayama-shi, Japanese: [okaꜜjama]) is the capital city of Okayama Prefecture in the Chūgoku region of Japan. The city was founded on June 1, 1889.
As of February 2017, the city has an estimated population of 720,841 and a population density of 910 persons per km². The total area is 789.88 square kilometres (304.97 square miles).
The city is the site of Kōraku-en, known as one of the top three traditional gardens in Japan, and Okayama Castle, which is ranked among the best 100 Japanese castles. The city is famous as the setting of the Japanese fable Momotarō.

Koraku-en is known as a daimyo (feudal lord) garden with a view of the castle. It has an area of 13 hectare, and has a lawn that is quite unusual for a Japanese garden. The scenic views from Yuishinzan Hill and Enyo-tei House along with the changing landscape throughout the seasons are popular.

This was first a flourishing merchants’ quarter in the Edo Era. It then gained attention afterwards as the buildings of Western architecture integrated themselves into the white walled townscape with the river lined with willow trees. It is a nationally designated Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.

Where to go in Okayama: Korakuen Garden and Okayama Castle
I had a chance to visit Okayama while competing in a sport event. My friends and I visited Korakuen Garden and Okayama Castle since it's close to each other. We had a great time and found a great scenic spot for photos! If you visit Okayama, don't forget to stop by these two places especially in Spring!
