Ohara Cotton producers and merchants became very rich in Kurashiki and could afford to purchase an amazing collection of Western Art and then dedicate museums to it. We will not have time to enter the museum because they don't allow filming inside and on top of it, it closes at 5pm and at that time EVERYTHING ELSE is also shutting down in this rich resort town city center, but at least we will get the feel of it from what the architecture and gardens have to say!
Here their official info: In 1930, to commemorate Kojima Torajiro, a Western-style painter who died the previous year, Kurashiki entrepreneur, Ohara Magosaburo, founded the Ohara Museum of Art. This private museum, featuring Western art, is the oldest in Japan.
Magosaburo, well-known as a collector of Japanese art, highly respected Torajiro’s talent and his humble attitude towards art, and sent Torajiro to Europe three times. Torajiro studied art in Europe and, at the same time, with Magosaburo’s superb European artwork, choosing pieces through the sense of beauty that he possessed as a Japanese artist.
Torajiro, who had a spirit typical of Meiji Era, felt there was a struggle between the highlights of Western art and his Japanese aesthetic sense, when he carefully chose artwork. He prudently chose masterpieces by El Greco, Gauguin, Monet, Matisse and other artists and brought them to Kurashiki, which are now the main features of the Ohara Museum of Art. His collection of Chinese and Egyptian art reveals the conflict of beauty between Western and Oriental art that he faced, where he tried to seek the essence of art.
The Ohara Museum of Art plays an active role in Kurashiki, expanding the collection to include both modern and contemporary art from the West and Japan, as well as pieces by artists who served Mingei Movement (Japanese Folk Art Movement). Now the museum is well known to the world as a private museum with its own character, reflecting Japanese culture.
The Ohara Museum of Art, in addition to opening the eyes of children and adults on site, spends time and energy on distance learning programs through the information communication technology (IT). As an art museum that will actively live through the 21st century, it also serves for broad activities cultivating the frontier of art. Art Lectures are held every summer, and Gallery Concerts, inviting world-class musicians, are part of its activities.

This clip is of Ritsurin Japanese Garden on Kagawa island in Takamatsu Japan. It's one of the most beautiful and oldest gardens in Japan. I shot this with my canon 7d and the opteka steadicam and 10-22mm canon wide angle lens.

The beautiful Adachi Museum of Art, located in Yasugi City, Shimane Prefecture, was founded in the hopes of combining natural garden beauty with artwork to increase interest and appreciation in Japanese art. The founder, Adachi Zenko, created the museum in 1980, utilizing his passion for Japanese art and landscaping.
The award winning garden at Adachi Museum of Art is a sight visitors do not want to miss. Deservingly it has received the best garden award in Japan every since 2003. The flowers, leaves, etc., change according to the season, allowing visitors to enjoy its beauty throughout the year. However, the garden can only be viewed from the museum building.
The art exhibits in the Adachi Museum of Art also change seasonally. The museum is home to nearly 1300 twentieth century paintings and artworks. In addition to rotating collection, the museum has a permanent display of paintings by Yokoyama Taikan. There is also a ceramics exhibit.
Hours: 9:00 to 17:30 (until 17:00 from October to March)

Admission: 2300 yen (50% off for foreign visitors)
Access Information:
**From Matsue Station, take a train to Yasugi Station. The journey is about 20 minutes and the cost is 410 yen (Japan Rail Pass holders can utilize their Rail Pass here).
From Yasugi Station, board the free shuttle bus to the museum. There is one shuttle bus every hour. The bus ride is about 20 minutes.
**From Okayama, there are limited express trains that stop at Yasugi Station before proceeding to Matsue City.

► Kiyosumi Garden is my absolute favorite japanese style garden in greater Tokyo area. It centers around a small lake, on which you can walk around from one small island to the next, via small bridges, stonepaths, etc. Kiyosumi is near perfect in terms of displaying all the elements used in traditional Japanese garden style; bonsai, water, rocks, wood, bridges and ofcourse, a teahouse - which I'll show you more of this year compared to last years edition.
Kiyosumi garden is a must-go if in Tokyo. If you only visit one garden while in Tokyo, this should be it!
Kiyosumi is located approx. 25 minutes from Shinjuku station by Oedo Subway Line, or 5 minutes from Nihonbashi by Hanzomon Subway Line. - Enjoy!

Tokugawaen is a Japanese garden, with numerous highlights around a pond in it's center. It was the mainstream style of major daimyo gardens during the Edo period. The sight of a clear stream flowing from the waterfall through the ravine, to the pond presenting an ocean, symbolically condenses the landscape of Japanese nature. Future Noren Exhibition at Nihonbashi
Several facilities in the Nihonbashi area are exhibiting a variety of futuristic “noren” (traditional curtains) from Nov. 1 until 11, 2018, including one that will “talk” to passersby on the street.

“Chiura Obata: American Modern” at the Smithsonian American Art Museum
Chiura Obata ranks among the most significant California-based artists and Japanese American cultural leaders of the last century. Born in Okayama, Japan, Obata immigrated to San Francisco as a teenager in 1903. By then, he was integrating Western practices into his art-making, and continued experimenting with new styles and methods throughout his seven-decade career. As a professor at University of California, Berkeley, and a founder of the East West Art Society, a Bay Area artists’ collective, he facilitated cross-cultural dialogue, despite widespread prejudice against Asian Americans. In 1942, when World War II fears and Executive Order 9066 forced Obata and more than one hundred thousand West Coast Japanese Americans into incarceration camps scattered across the western United States, he created art schools in the camps to help fellow prisoners cope with their displacement and loss. After the war, Obata returned to his callings as a painter, teacher, and cultural ambassador with scars that brought new emotional force to his work.
