A taste of waterfall training
Deep in the forests of western Tokyo, regular people have the chance to experience one of Japan’s traditional forms of spiritual training. (Hinohara, Tokyo)
Shinto, Shugendo, and esoteric Buddhist practitioners have been doing waterfall training for hundreds of years ahead of festivals and sacred events.
Keiichi Nishizawa, Shinto priest, Hiramatsuten Shrine / “Shugendo practitioners do ascetic training in the mountains to strengthen their minds and bodies. They do waterfall training as preparation.”
In Shintoism, Kuzuryu Shrine is home to the gods that guard the waterfall.
‘Kuzuryu’ means ‘nine-headed dragon.’
There, an assistant explains the procedures to the group of 22 participants.
Kuzuryu Falls is in a ravine near the shrine.
Why would anyone want to attempt this difficult training?
Yuji Sano, Civil servant / “My coworker invited me. I want to forget everything that happened at work this year and start fresh.”
Kizuki Takano, Office worker / “I want to get rid of these impure and negative thoughts I have. They pile up before you know it.”
Ryo Sugihara, Office worker / He’s got nothing but impure thoughts.
Shinto priest Keiichi Nishizawa offers a prayer as the trainees focus on the task at hand.
Keiichi Nishizawa, Shinto priest, Hiramatsu Tenjinsha / “That is “oharai,” a prayer to purify the body.“
A rowing exercise warms up the body before entering the chilly water.
Then, into the falls! Round one is short.
The gesture signifies entering a sacred space, and the strength to endure the waterfall.
Trainees shout a request to the gods for purification and to drive away negativity.
Keiichi Nishizawa, Shinto priest, Hiramatsu Tenjinsha / It’s something people feel, but may not be aware of. When you put your hands together and ask to be purified, gods descend and help you.
Training concludes after 2 to 3 trips into the falls.
These women made a new start after failing to reach their dieting goals.
Ai Kondo / “I was nervous but now I feel cleansed.”
Ryo Sugihara, Office worker / “I feel like I can move forward at work. Energy from nature came into me.”
Yuji Sano / “The water was so powerful, I couldn’t think about anything. I was able to empty my mind.”
Now 69, Nishizawa did waterfall training for years to develop himself as a Shinto priest. People started going with him.
Keiichi Nishizawa, Shinto priest, Hiramatsuten Shrine / “When the internet developed, I began offering training to the public.”
Foreign tourists and even corporations training new hires come to the waterfall.
But Nishizawa has a special reason for continuing to offer the training.
Keiichi Nishizawa, Shinto priest, Hiramatsuten Shrine / “Many Japanese are not religious. I hope waterfall training will be an impetus for them to re-examine spirituality.”
Joshua Brown, Nippon TV / “Waterfall training is a part of Japan’s spiritual heritage. Experiences like this keep it alive and relevant in modern society. Joshua Brown, Nippon T-V.”

Japan Trip: Taking a Trip Back in Time on Honjima Island, Marugame City, Kagawa Prefecture, 38
Japan Trip: Taking a Trip Back in Time on Honjima Island, Marugame City, Kagawa Prefecture, 38
Visitors interested in maritime transportation, Japan’s past and small island beauty should visit Honjima (本島), located in the Seto Inland Sea off the coast of Marugame City in Kagawa Prefecture, Shikoku. Honjima is the second largest island in the Shiwaku Islands which belong to Marugame City.
Shiwaku Islands played a vital role in maritime century with Honjima being the center of power among the islands. In the past, the home base of the Shiwaku Navy (Shiwaku Suigun) was located in Honjima. In the late 1500’s, Toyotomi Hideyoshi recruited members of Shiwaku Navy, an organization of highly skilled Japanese sailors, join him to facilitate trade as well as government affairs on behalf of the shogun. Visitors interested in learning more about this part of Japanese history are encouraged to visit the former government office (Shiwaku Kinbansho). Visitors can view relics of the Shiwaku Navy here, such as the logbook of the Kanrin Mary, the first Japanese ship to cross the Pacific Ocean.
Visitors may also wish to visit Kasashima Town, along the northeastern coast of Honjima. Walking through the narrow streets with the old fashioned stone walls, visitors will come upon the Important Historic Structure Group Preservation Zone where old wooden townhouses that have been preserved to reflect the traditional architecture. Though there are about 20 townhouses, only 3 have been site aside for visitors to enter to view the typical traditional Japanese household items.
Among the few other points of interest on the island is the old fashioned elementary school, the former Mizumiiro Elementary School on the west coast. This school was used in the 2004 movie “Kikansha Sensei (Big Silent Man)”. Also on the west coast is Meotogura (couple warehouse), a uniquely constructed warehouse. Visitors will find various shrines and temples on the island as well.
Honjima is one of the venues for Setouchi Triennale, a modern art festival with venues spread out among the islands in the Seto Inland Sea. Several of the outdoor art pieces from the festival have a permanent home on Honjima, allowing visitors to appreciate them during their visit.

Takamijima Island, a part of Shiwaku Island Chain in the Seto Inland Sea, is a small beautiful island with deep historic roots. The name Takamijima literally translates to “high view island.” This may be explained by Mount Ryouzan which lies in the center of the island.
Visitors may wish to visit the southern part of the island where the Hama District is. Here is the Takami Hachiman Shrine. Visitors will find a unique graveyard here as well. The graves on this island have a dual burial system. There is one grave which holds the remains of the deceased. The other grave is for family members to visit and pay their respects to the deceased.
On the north end of the island was the Itamochi District. However, due to the depopulation crisis affecting rural areas of Japan, no one lives in the Itamochi District anymore. Most of the island residents, less than 100 people, live primarily in the small fishing village located on southeastern shore. Visitors will find homes and fish factories north of the port with many friendly cats prowling nearby hoping for a sample or scrap.
Visitors wandering through the Ura District located 50 meters into the mountains will encounter the maze of narrow stone walled alleys reflecting a time when foot traffic was all a village encountered. The homes built during the Edo period are preserved here as well. This traditional island scenery has earned this area a few appearances on the big screen. However, most of the homes do not any people living there, making this district a ghost town as well.
Being one of the venues of the Setouchi Triennale, a modern art festival with multiple locations among the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, Takamijima is working hard to revive its population and economy. Hoping to rebrand itself as a home to contemporary art, two of the art pieces from the festivals have a permanent home on the island. It is unfortunate, however, that the public viewing of the pieces is rare.

Life in Japan - Searching for Fireflies
Summer is just around the corner, the greenery is fully grown and it is warm and humid - that's what fireflies like :) These insects can give a spectacular show after sunset, so we wanted to see them. Last Saturday we went to search for fireflies around Sumiyoshi River. Well, we didn't see any spectacular lights exhibit but it wasn't a wasted time either!
Have you ever seen fireflies?
