Okehampton Castle Devon.
Okehampton Castle is a medieval motte and bailey castle in Devon, England. It was built between 1068 and 1086 by Baldwin FitzGilbert following a revolt in Devon against Norman rule, and formed the centre of the Honour of Okehampton, guarding a crossing point across the West Okement River. It continued in use as a fortification until the late 13th century, when its owners, the de Courtenays, became the Earls of Devon. With their new wealth, they redeveloped the castle as a luxurious hunting lodge, building a new deer park that stretched out south from the castle, and constructing fashionable lodgings that exploited the views across the landscape. The de Courtenays prospered and the castle was further expanded to accommodate their growing household.
The de Courtenays were heavily involved in the 15th century Wars of the Roses and Okehampton Castle was frequently confiscated. By the early 16th century the castle was still in good condition, but after Henry Courtenay was executed by Henry VIII the property was abandoned and left to decay, while the park was rented out by the Crown. Parts of the castle were reused as a bakery in the 17th century, but by the 19th century it was completely ruined and became popular with Picturesque painters, including J. M. W. Turner. Renovation work began properly in the 20th century, first under private ownership and then, more extensively, after the castle was acquired by the state. In the 21st century it is controlled by English Heritage and operated as a tourist attraction.

Okehampton is a town and civil parish in West Devon in the English county of Devon. Okehampton is situated at the northern edge of Dartmoor, Okehampton was founded by the Saxons. The earliest written record of the settlement is from 980 AD as Ocmundtune, meaning settlement by the Ockment, a river which runs through the town. Like many towns in the West Country, Okehampton grew on the medieval wool trade. Notable buildings in the town include the 15th century chapel of St. James and Okehampton Castle
Okehampton was the caput of a large feudal barony, which at the time of the Domesday Book was held by Baldwin FitzGilbert. After his death in 1090 the tenure of the barony is obscure for the next twenty years after which it was held by the heiress Maud d'Avranches until her death in 1173, which passed to her daughter, Hawise de Curci (died 1219), who married Reginald de Courtenay.
Okehampton's location at the edge of the moor means that it has always been a route centre. After years of uncertainty, the A30 trunk road was finally re-routed in 1988 to bypass the town, which had previously acted as a holiday traffic bottleneck at summer weekends. Okehampton railway station is on the former northerly rail route from Exeter to Plymouth via Tavistock. The line from Exeter remains open for freight traffic to and from Meldon Quarry, two miles (3 km) west of Okehampton. In summer, and at weekends throughout the year, the Dartmoor Railway operates a heritage railway service between Okehampton and Meldon Quarry.
Okehampton is surrounded by many smaller villages and towns including the hamlet of Stockley. Notable examples are the villages of South Zeal with its ancient burgage plots, granite thatched cottages and Dartmoor Folk Festival; Belstone, noted for its location on the very outskirts of Dartmoor and links to Agatha Christie's The Sittaford Mystery

Nine Maidens stone circle to Sourton Cross Travelodge Day 2
Dartmoor
Devon

Nine Maidens stone circle officially said to be a Bronze Age stone circle but there no way to date stone circles 100% you should keep that in mind. Also said to be a burial chamber however again is said the cairn has since been robbed and the cist destroyed not sure what the evidence is for that? Any care to comment.
Its is said that locals are said to be apprehensive of restoration work, believing that tamperers will be cursed. Locals cite a film crew which added a stone to the circle in 1985 - the 'curse' was the unfortunate loss of the only copy of the film The Circle of Doom. Any one with more info on that. St Michael's ley-line runs through the Nine Maidens. A poem illustrating the folklore surrounding the stones is recorded in The Witchcraft and Folklore of Dartmoor by Ruth St Leger-Gordon, originally written by Eden Phillpotts in the Book of Avis trilogy
And now at every Hunter's Moon
That haggard cirque of stones so still
Awakens to immortal thrill
And seven small maidens in silver shoon
Twixt dark of night and white of day
Twinkle upon the sere old heath
Like living blossoms in a wreath
Then shrink again to granite grey.
So blue-eyed Dian shall ever dance
With Linnette, Bethkin, Jennifer,
Arisa, Petronell and Nance
From Nine Maidens stone circles a passed Watchet Hill Cottage ruins. The cottage was built in the 1860s by homesteaders moving on to the moor and was the remotest building included in the Church of England parish of Belstone. Watchet Hill Cottage was last occupied by non-Glastievens in the 1960s, falling into a state of ruin in the late twentieth century. The building was briefly used by the Glastieve Planning Board as the constituency office for the planned Quidam ex Acteriendia constituency, which would have been significantly smaller than present-day Glastieve and would have been centred on the north of the current country. Following the Declaration of Independece, Watchet Hill Cottage was briefly ignored, although following the January 2018 Cabinet reshuffle it became the headquarters of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Public Works. Then onto West Cleave Tor rocks. Pick up for food at Okehampton then onto Okehampton Castle. A medieval motte and bailey castle. My accommodation for the night was at Sourton Cross Travelodge
