Exploring the BC Sunshine Coast Part 3 - Northern Coast
In this final video from our September 2019 tour of the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia, we head up the northern coast from Powell River to Lund.
Along the way, I have footage of the Hulks floating concrete ship breakwater, Okeover Provincial Park, and the Lund harbor area. The video finishes with early morning views from the ferry as we sail back to Vancouver Island.

Sunken Boat Loon Lake Powell River British Columbia
Here is a video of a sunken 1920's Gill Netter on Loon Lake - Inland Lake in Powell River British Columbia Canada. This boat appears to be sitting on a crib and has supports on the side helping hold it up. The state of it also suggest that it has burnt but did not sink but was rather on dry land in this position suggesting the lake has risen since.

4-Day Desolation Sound BC Ocean Canoe Paddling Trip
KJ and I spent a delightful and calm four days paddling (about 80 km) in Desolation Sound in May, 2019. We launched from Okeover. Because we had a late start (6 p.m.), we just paddled up to Hare Point for dinner and the first night. The second day, we paddled to the Curmes, where we swam, and then when the winds died down at 5 p.m., we paddled over to Prideaux Haven for a looksee. On the third sunny day, we crossed the sound and headed down Malaspina Straight and found a beach-front spot in the Copeland Islands. Up early the next morning, we sped around the point and back down Okeover Inlet, fighting an exiting tide, and stopped at Grace Harbour for a swim in Black Lake. Gotta love lake water! To end the trip, we paddled back to Okeover and our take out.
This is a great trip for those who are just learning about tides and currents because it's very sheltered. Winds do come up in the afternoons, but not like elsewhere.
Our canoe is a 17.5 ft Kevlar Clipper Tripper. Though we have a Northwater skirt, we did not use it on this trip.
We paddle with ottertail paddles because they are a little easier on the body as they do not pull as much water. That way, we can keep a higher cadence.
Our average moving speed on flat water is over 5 km/h. Typically, we paddle 20 km + per day.
Desolation Sound hints:
-When you fill in your car etc info on the parking slip and put your money on the envelope ($5/day) don't forget to take out the slip of paper already in the envelope to put on your dash.
-Camping fees are $5 per night per person in summer.
-July and August are busy with paddlers and big boats.
-Carry water or filter water from the many lakes (Unwin, Cassel, Black and the one in Roscoe Bay)--though it's a long carry from the lake to the ocean.
-All camping in the park is on tent pads. There are hooks to attach the tent, so bring cord.
