A trip to Mombetsu in Hokkaido – Hairy crab and cherry salmon in Mombetsu on the Sea of Okhotsk!
The sea is covered with ice in winter, with “Umi-ake” (the start of fishing season) arriving in May at the Sea of Okhotsk. Fishermen bring in large hauls of hairy crab that feed on rich nutrients during the winter months. Come and taste fresh hairy crab for yourself!

This museum is situated at the top of Mt. Tento-zan, in a suburb of Abashiri. The museum provides a simulated drift ice experience in a room where the temperature is set at -15c°. You can see drift ice there even in the summer.

A trip to Mombetsu in Hokkaido – Discover the huge crab claw monument in Okhotsk!
This is a huge crab claw monument located immediately next to “Garinko-go” (a boat that breaks apart blocks of drift ice as it moves forward) station. This is a great spot to take commemorative photos and enjoy the drift ice.
