This is one of the 'Kokubun-ji' temples built nationwide in the 13th year of Tempyo (741 A.D.) by decree of the Emperor Shomu. The remains of the temporary palace of Emperor Go-Daigo, who was exiled to Oki during the Genko War (1331-1333), still stand today. On April 21st every year is the Oki Kokubun-ji Renge-e-mai (ancient court dance) is held, telling of the glory of Tempyo culture even today.

Kasuga Shrine (Dogo Island)
At this shrine, where beautiful white sand beach stretches before your eyes, is a Japanese black pine forest with trees over 350 years old, also known as Equinox Forest. If you go on the Spring or Autumn Equinox, you can see the moment the sun rises directly in the middle of the gate.

Shirashima Coast (Dogo Island)
A view of the coast at the northernmost tip of the Oki Islands Numerous small islands stretching directly north of the Dogo Island are collectively called the Shirashima Coast. The vivid colors of the white rocky islands in the emerald green sea woven together with the fresh green of the trees provides a soothing sight to visitors. Along the walking track to the lookout, see unusual sights, such as a mixture of northern, southern, and continental plants, as well as hydrangeas that keep their colours and do not wilt till December.
