Okolehau Trail, Hanalei Kauai Hawaii
Okolehau Trail is referred to as The Puffer. It gains 1250 feet in 2.5 miles. The first 2/3 of a mile the Okolehau Trail is really the remains of an old dirt road. You climb, climb, climb. The footing is generally good unless a good rain came through recently. There are 2 major plateau's on the trail. The first nice overlook
is at 2/3 miles next to the tall powerline pole. At the one mile mark look for this unusual tree that I call Woody. Keep climbing another 5 minutes and you reach the first plateau which is flat and has ti plants on it. You have sweeping views of Hanalei Bay, Hanalei Pier (South Pacific), the Kilauea Lighthouse, Princeville, the taro fields you left behind, and Bali Hai. The next .25 of a mile is pretty flat then at the 1.5 mile mark it turns steep again and is far more muddy but the reward is ahead.
At the END of the Okolehau Trail is another plateau and you see everything you did before plus the Hanalei River coming out of the mountain valley and a close up view of all the mountains including Wai'ale'ale. In total you see 1/5 of the entire island!
You will find the Okolehau Trail off the main road from Princeville. Go toward Kee Beach on 560 leaving Princeville. Once you get to the bottom of the hill and cross the first one lane bridge take an immediate left by the taro fields. You will go down the road about ½ a mile to a parking lot across from the start of the trail. There are usually plenty of hiking sticks leaning against the bridge.
Don't forget to stop at the Hanalei Overlook on the way back up the hill to see where you climbed.

Waipa Ranch Trail, Kauai Hawaii
I enjoy trying to find new trails and ones that aren't in all the guide books.
For no other reason except this is where I started, I call this one Waipa Ranch Trail. The trail begins at the back of the Waipa Ranch property. There is another longer way to begin the trail and it can be identified in Google Earth further down the north shore. I took the direct route which was through the open front gate and a couple of noisy dogs. I couldn't find anyone to check in with so I continued. I will do this hike again and I will again look for someone to ask for permission to cross through the property.
The trail is more or less an old unused road to the radio tower on Makaihuwaa Ridge above Hanalei Bay. The hike winds up around the hillside for 1.3 miles reaching a top altitude of 567 GPS feet on the trail. It is an easy hike but does go through some overgrown places since it is not an official hiking trail. There are some nice views along the way. There is a hunters kennel at the beginning with around 7 hungry dogs that test your nerves. The whole hike up and down takes less than an hour. It is a much less strenuous hike than the Okolehao Trail on the other side of the Hanalei Valley.

Hiking Kuilau Ridge Trail in Kauai, Hawaii
It's honeymoon time! We crossed the Pacific to spend eight days on Maui and Kauai and hiked up the Kuilau Ridge Trail in Wailua River State Park to cap off the vacation. We're definitely not in Arizona with this one...
*Shot on iPhone because my GoPro is now at the bottom of the Napili Bay in Maui.
Hiking Kauai - Off the Beaten Trail (Part 1)
One of my favorite things to do on Kauai is to go on morning hikes. Today's hike took us off of the beaten trail on the North shore on an adventure that led us to a beautiful secluded beach that took my breath away.

An easy, peaceful mountain trail to climb with epic vistas & hauntingly beautiful segments, like the music I chose for it. So gorgeous! I'm looking forward to traveling the rest of it.

Please, do not attempt, without being prepared. This climb can easily turn lethal.
Hiking Sleeping Giant west trail 2
Sleeping Giant is located on the east coast of Kauai Hawaii. The trail is shaded in the morning but there are a lot mosquitos in the damp areas of the trail. The lower elevations are muddy so attempt to go in the morning before the afternoon showers start.
It is about three miles to the top but the views are great.
Comments are welcomed.

SeaLodge Beach Path, Kauai Hawaii
Located in Princeville on Kauai's north shore, SeaLodge Beach is a hidden gem. It is a small pocket of sand, surrounded by lush vegetation. (It reminds me a lot of Hideaways Beach~ same size with coral outcrops) Most of the time, the beach is empty because not many people know it's there. The reason is mainly access issues. If you're not a guest at SeaLodge Resort, there is basically no way that you can park anywhere near the trail to the beach. Even in the adjacent neighborhood, street parking is not allowed. They will tow your car. No public parking is available. So if you really want to visit this beach, park in the Makai Golf Course parking lot just 10 minutes away.
There is a reef on the near shore ocean bottom, so the best activity here is snorkeling, especially when the ocean is calm. Turtles also like this area. When the surf is up, currents often times form and the waves can be too dangerous and reach all the way to the base of the cliff. To get to the beach, you'll have to hike to it (takes about 10-15 minutes). The path itself is picturesque too and well worth it.
The path starts at Keoniana Road. Look for the yellow chain in the cul-d-sac. The first third of the hike is a paved path down to the water tank. The real path begins on the backside of the water tank. It is an easy path to follow and it crosses a small stream. The path cuts through the forest then follows the ocean around to the beach. The path does become narrow and to reach the beach at the end of the path you have to crawl down a few boulders.
