I took a trip to Edo state, Nigeria primarily to explore Okomu National Park. One thing I didn't know about the place was the presence of a number of interesting wildlife within the park until my tour guide told me about them. Again, I felt disappointed that the Nigerian government wasn't really paying attention to maximizing this park considering the massive potentials it has.

Rangers at Okomu National Park Service mark 2019 World Rangers Day
Conservator of Park, National Park Service, Okomu National Park, in Ovia South West Local Government Area, Edo State, Kareem Tesleem, has commended Rangers in Okomu National Park for their selfless efforts in ensuring the protection of Nigeria’s biodiversity, cultural and natural resources.
He gave the commendation at this year's World Rangers day celebration held at the Head office, in Udo.

The forests of southern Nigeria, much reduced in size, still contain some small elephant populations. Okomu National Park, in Edo State, comprises some 200 square kilometres of forest and swamp, under heavy pressure from illegal logging, settlement, hunting and even oil smuggling. The rangers are poorly armed, and visitors are few and far between. In Benin City, only some 50 kms away, few people are aware that elephants still survive in Okomu. They are shy and elusive, which is probably just as well. A casual visitor has no chance of seeing them. But their existence is undeniable…take a look at this camera-trap video supplied by the Nigerian National Park Service (nb the date-code at the bottom of the film is incorrect). Okomu is also home to buffalos, chimpanzees, rare monkeys and fabulous birdlife. We hope that as Nigeria’s engagement with the EPI deepens, we can work together on a National Elephant Action Plan, to secure the future of Okomu and other forests.

6. Igue Festival – a traditional festival celebrated annually between Christmas and New Year to commemorate the wedding of an ancient Benin oba and to renew the oba’s powers and blessings on the people and land.
7. Somorika Hills – a hikers’ paradise of mountainous hills in Somorika town in Akoko-Edo, Edo State.
8. Emotan Statue – located in the Oba Market in Benin City, Emotan Statue is a memorial of an Edo heroine and a model for every Edo woman.
9. Ososo Tourist Center – a picturesque town with granite and volcanic mountains in Somorika, in the Akoko-Edo Local Government area. It is the border between Edo State and Kogi State.
10. Igun Street – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The street is lined with shops celebrating the artwork of the best bronze casters in the world. Sculptors and artists accept orders for custom artwork.

Edo State is located in southern Nigeria and borders Ondo State, Delta State, Ekiti State, Kogi State, and Anambra State. It covers an area of approximately 6,873 square miles (17,802 square kilometers). Benin City is the capital and most populous city. Edo State is nicknamed, Heartbeat of the Nation. It was part of the former Bendel State which comprised of Delta State and Edo State until 1991. Edo State is well-known around the world for her ancient Benin Kingdom's historic bronze sculptures. The sculptures were looted during the British invasion of the kingdom in 1897. Ijaws In Edo State Warn Oba Of Benin Over Attempt To Claim Okomu
Ijaw communities in Okomu Kingdom, Ovia South Local Government Area of Edo State, have alleged that they are victims of marginalisation by their Bini neighbours and the Edo State government. They also claimed that they are the aborigines of the area, not settlers, which the Bini want to appropriate. Their claims were made in a statement issued from the palace of traditional ruler, the Kalasuo of Okomu Kingdom, by the Traditional Council. According to the statement, Okomu Kingdom is made up of many communities, including Okomu, Osikoloba, Oyibogbene, Markilolo Gbene, Wuluku Gbene, Ejuko Gbene, Iwala Gbene, Zughu Gbene, Agbede Gbene, Oweike Gbene, Izon Gbene, Beri 1, Beri 2, Usaku-Uba Gbene and Dinou Bou Gbene, Others are Ogiri Fulaba Gbene, Tala Gbene, IK Gbene, Ebi Gbene, Itoko Gbene, Orubai Ukumu, Opu-Uba Gbene, Iroko Gbene and Reuben Gbene.

Governor Obaseki commissions 11,400ha plantation
Okomu Plc’s expansion project to create 40,000 jobs in Edo

Chairman of Okomu Oil Company Plc., Gbenga Oyebode SAN, has pledged that the company is committed to creating not less than 40,000 jobs with expansion of the company’s operations into 10 communities in the state, representing 20 per cent of Governor Godwin Obaseki’s 200,000 jobs creation target in Edo State.
Oyebode said this at the commissioning of the Okomu Extension 2 Plantation in Ovia North East Local Government Area, which was witnessed by captains of industries, Benin high chiefs and members of the companies' host community.
He said that the Edo State government’s support has been tremendous, noting, “We expect to plant the whole 11,400 hectares by next year. Then in 2020, we will start milling. For us, the state government has been phenomenal. It shows that the state government is not just in full support of agribusiness but of commercial enterprise.”
On his company’s support for Obasek’s job creation drive, he said, “We expect to contribute to the governor’s job creation drive and we have already started. Right now, we are at 2,000. Our expectation is that before we get to 2020, we would have created 4,000 jobs. There is a multiplier effect, however. Of that 4,000 we are looking at, we are going to have 40,000 new jobs that will be directly linked to this company.”
The jobs include those to be generated from the activities of contractors, out-growers, suppliers, maintenance and security services, and other agro-allied activities needed for the proper running of the plantation.
Commissioning the new estate, the governor said that Edo State is working towards attaining the status of an economic hub with the expansion project, and that raw materials from the plant will be deployed to factories at the Benin Industrial Park when it commences operation.
He commended the Federal Government for taking the right decision in 1976 to open up the space for private investment in oil palm sector in Nigeria, noting “since the move, Okomu Plc has been standing tall. We are made to understand that the yield per ton on the farm is highest in Nigeria.”
He said he was impressed with the speed of development at the plantation, noting that it was a landmark achievement to have cultivated 9,000 hectares of oil palm in a year.
He assured that he would continue to support the company as long as they continue to expand in the state, “They were able to prepare and cultivate 9,000 hectares of land in one year. Can you imagine if we had more companies expanding at this pace; the amount of jobs and economic activity that they will create. I think this is a feat and it is amazing.”
He assured that he was going to work with the governments of oil palm producing states in Nigeria, such as Ondo and Cross River states, to move for the establishment of an oil palm council in Nigeria.
He also said that the Edo State government is intent on creating a master plan for agricultural development in the state.
Managing Director, Okomu Plc, Graham Hefer, said that the company is committed to contributing to the state and Nigeria’s economy by creating jobs, boosting productivity and impacting lives.
He said that the company has a robust Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme that runs into millions of naira per annum, noting that the host communities have been worthy partners in progress.

Farmers urge Okomu Plc to implement and full compensation
Some farmers in Odighi, Ovia North East, Oke Uhumwurde local government area, and Uhiere in Owan East have called on the Federal and Edo State Government to prevail on Okomu Oil Palm PLC to complete the compensation for lands acquired for its plantations in their communities.
The farmers made the demand during the Environmental Rights Action media tour of some communities hosting Okomu Oil Palm Plantation as part of the field work on the Round-table on sustainable Palm Oil Certification Compliance.
