Okonomiyaki (お好み焼き o-konomi-yaki) is a Japanese savoury pancake containing a variety of ingredients. The name is derived from the word okonomi, meaning what you like or what you want, and yaki meaning grilled or cooked (cf. yakitori and yakisoba). Okonomiyaki is mainly associated with the Kansai or Hiroshima areas of Japan, but is widely available throughout the country. Toppings and batters tend to vary according to region.
In Hiroshima, the ingredients are layered rather than mixed. The layers are typically batter, cabbage, pork, and optional items such as squid, octopus, and cheese. Noodles (yakisoba, udon) are also used as a topping with fried egg and a generous amount of okonomiyaki sauce. The amount of cabbage used is usually three to four times the amount used in the Osaka style. It starts out piled very high and is pushed down as the cabbage cooks. Okonomi-mura (お好み村, lit. Okonomiyaki Village) is a Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki food theme park located at 5-13 Shintenchi in Naka-ku, Hiroshima, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. It is near the east end of Hondōriand has 24 okonomiyaki restaurants, each with a slightly different style and set of ingredients. The restaurants there use a specialty okonomiyaki sauce created especially for Okonomi-mura by Sun Foods. Okonomi-mura, in Naka-ku in Hiroshima, was the top food theme park destination for families in Japan according to an April 2004 poll.

In this week's video, we make a brief stop and take a little walking tour of Hiroshima Japan. We also stop by Hassei to try some Hiroshima okonomiyaki which a well known Japanese savory pancake street food dish. This dish is prepared on a teppanyaki grill with lots of choices of toppings and filling! You have a choice of soba or udon noodles as well as seafood, vegetable or meat toppings.

The restaurant was one in a complex of 3 floors. We had an Oyster Okonomiyaki mixing both famous elements of Hirsohima.

My Adventures in Japan, May 2014: Hondori, Hiroshima
Hondōri is a commercial area in Naka-ku, Hiroshima, Japan, which centers on the Hondōri street which today is a shopping arcade. Hondōri, which means Main Street, runs from Hatchōbori to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. It is a pedestrian arcade that is closed to traffic and lined with shops and restaurants. The entire shopping area along Hondōri was destroyed by the 1945 atomic bombing, due to the blast and fire. Hondōri was reconstructed in 1950. It stretches east about half a kilometer and the general opening hours for the shops on the arcade are from 9/10 in the morning until 9/10 at night.

A few months ago we walked you through the small streets of a very popular area of Tokyo with its picturesque river : Nakameguro (Naka-Meguro), and while the place is a pleasant place for a lovely promenade all year long, it is only during the hanami or ‘cherry blossom season’ that Nakameguro turns into a truly enchanting place.
