Japan's BEST ONSEN in the SNOW?!! Tsuru no Yu Onsen - 鶴の湯温泉
Tsuru no Yu, located in the Nyuto Onsen Town district in Akita Prefecture, is often referred to as one of the best Onsen experiences in Japan. It dates back to the 1600s and is largely left untouched, with traditional thatched wooden roofs and housing, and is surrounded by forests and mountains.
However, one of the most famous points are the outdoor mixed-gender Onsen baths, which have a milky color and are said to have many benefits. They are often featured in tourism promotions/photographs.
You are also provided with a traditional Japanese Ryokan meal, which include various traditional and local foods such as Fish, or Mountain Vegetables.
The Ryokan accomodation often books out MONTHS prior, even when I called about 4 months earlier I couldn't get the day I wanted.
This is also partly due to the isolation of the location, being only accessible by car or a provided shuttle bus. Futhermore, to book this Onsen, you either need to call the Onsen or fax to book your accommodation, which largely requires some degree of Japanese.
To get here from Tokyo:
Catch the Akita Shinkansen Komachi to Tazawako Station (Approx 3 hours, all seats are reserved)
Then catch a bus from Tazawako Station to Arupa Komakusa, where the Ryokan's shuttle bus will normally be waiting for you.

After all day in the cold Hokkaido weather hunting for great photos of the world famous TANCHO dancing JAPANESE Red-crowned CRANE it is a true blessing to come back to my warm cute room and super delicious dining and soothing HOT SPRING of HOTEL TAITO that is also luckily located just 10 minutes on foot from the BEST place to photograph the Cranes, TSURUI ITO TANCHO SANCTUARY!!! And the hotel owner Mr. Wada is himself a famous photographer of these birds and entire fauna of this area, he can help you understand how to photograph them and is even hired by TV stations and teams coming to Kushiro for an amazing experience! Just beware the hotel sells out sometimes even a year in advance, so book it early!

A ryokan is a traditional Japanese Inn that originated in the Edo period when inns served travelers along Japan's highways. Ryokans feature tatami-matted rooms, communal baths, and other public areas where guests wear yukata (a casual light kimono).
The only drawback for us is sleeping on futons on the floor but the ambiance and chance to immerse oneself in a Japanese way of life long gone by makes up for that. Prepare for tons of food in all videos that follow because the multiple courses were a feast for the eyes, if not only for the palate. There were some eewwws each day...

Yamada Onsen is an onsen (hot spring) village located in Nagano and is famous for its many ryokans. Like many onsen villages Yamada Onsen does not offer much however, we could argue that this is what exactly what onsen villages are designed to be; a place where you can relax and enjoy nature in the comfort of one of its many ryokan. Like Fujiiso ryokan where my family and I stayed for a few days in order to unwind.

Aoni Onsen | Relaxation At Its Finest
My first overnight onsen experience was absolutely amazing. Having a full day of relaxation in these hot springs with no electricity or connection to the world was the best way to be present.

Hida Takayama in Gifu Prefecture still has its historic buildings and culture in the Edo period, such as the old town and the Takayama Jinya and Morning Market. The Festival Float of Takayama Festival Museum exhibits the festival floats of the Spring and Autumn Takayama Festival, which began in the mid-1600s, and gives you a glimpse of Hida’s craftsmanship.
