BUNNY ISLAND JAPAN // JAPANS RABBIT ISLAND // OKUNOSHIMA TRAVEL
Today we’re exploring Japan's Rabbit Island, Ōkunoshima (大久野島)!
If you're planning a trip, head to to get all the info you need.
This amazing tourist destination is a small island located in the Inland Sea of Japan in the city of Takehara, Hiroshima Prefecture. It is often called Usagi Jima (ウサギ島, Rabbit Island) because of the countless bunny rabbits that roam the island. Almost all of them are tame and will approach humans when offered a treat! No one knows exactly how they got there, but it’s believed they were released on the island after World War II when the island was turned in to a park. Please feel free to drop questions below if you need any help, like how to get to rabbit island or the rabbit island ferry timetable.

Are you planning a Japan trip in 2018? Or looking for Things to Do in Hiroshima? Perhaps looking for ideas for a Hiroshima Day Trip? Then why not head to Okunoshima, or Rabbit Island... yes, an island full of rabbits!
Okunoshima or Rabbit Island is located to the east of Hiroshima. You can either head here on the train or catch the bus from Hiroshima Station to Tadanoumi followed by a short ferry trip. Once there you will discover why Okunoshima needs to be on your list of Hiroshima places to visit!
Rabbit Island also has a wealth of history dating back to before World War 2, as a site used to manufacture poisonous gas for use in chemical warfare. Walk up to the viewpoint or check out some of the ruins including the old power plant.
Have a great trip!

Takehara is a small town to the east of Hiroshima close to Tadanoumi and Okunoshima (Rabbit Island) which is often referred to as the Mini Kyoto or Little Kyoto, full of Edo style architecture, history, shrines and temples.
A great opportunity to experience small town Japan and learn more of the history of Japan, even though everything may be closed!
Also you'll find some information on how to get a train in Japan, specifically from smaller stations!

Thousands of Bunnies Chillin' on Japan's Rabbit Island
This is Episode 4 of the Bunny Island Web Series. In this video, we focus on when the rabbits are resting during the day. During the hot summer months, the bunnies like to just lounge around and chill in the shade. Their favorite spots include under the tree or park benches, in holes that they have dug out, and even on the street by the curb!

Rabbit Island in Japan!!! (Okunoshima) Bunnies everywhere!
Rabbit Island in Japan! (known in Japan as Okunoshima)
Fluffy wild bunnies hop up to you as soon as you step foot on the island. Welcome to Rabbit Island in Japan!
Okunoshima was once used to create poison gas in WW2. The rabbits used for testing in the poison gas experiments were let loose onto the island after the war, and with no natural predators on the island, the rabbits flourished!
The rabbits approach you if you walk nearby because they are used to people feeding them all day, everyday. You're their best source of food!
You'll also find a hotel, a visitor center, and the old poison gas facility on Okunoshima island.
I arrived to Rabbit Island from Hiroshima. It was easy to take JR trains to get there. See my video on how to get to rabbit island:
