The Old Bazaar Skopje, Стара чаршија, Çarshia e Vjetër
The Old Bazaar (Macedonian: Стара чаршија, Stara čaršija; Albanian: Çarshia e Vjetër) in Skopje is situated on the eastern bank of the Vardar River, stretching from the Stone Bridge to the Bit-Pazar and from the Skopje Fortress to the Serava river. The Old Bazaar falls primarily within the borders of Čair Municipality and is a protected national landmark.
The earliest known sources that describe the existence of a merchant quarter on the bazaar's territory date back to the 12th century.
Ottoman architecture is predominant in the Old Bazaar, although remains of Byzantine architecture are evident as well, while recent reconstructions have led to the application of elements specific to modern architecture.
In 2008, the Macedonian Parliament adopted a law recognising the Old Bazaar as cultural heritage of particular importance for the country to be permanently protected.
Skopje, Macedonia - Old Bazaar
After you leave the center of Skopje, Macedonia and cross the old stone bridge, you will find yourself in the city's Turkish quarter, where old world shops filled with jewelry, clothing, food and black market goods are being sold by hundreds of men, women, children, and street-side vendors.
This is video from a quick run through of the old bazaar. Sorry for the shaky camera. I was walking, trying to hide the video camera, and protect myself from pick pockets all at the same time.

Exploring Skopje, Macedonia on Your Own
At last a free afternoon to enjoy Skopje at leisure! Marine Steve and I walked across the Stone Bridge, originally built in the Sixth Century by Byzantine Emperor Justinian, destroyed, and reconstructed. It connects the main square and restored Turkish bazaar area dating back to Ottoman times. Don't miss the long Gold Street. What else would a person call a street filled with nothing by jowl-to-jowl gold-laden windows?
Past other shops, mosques, restaurants and supermarkets before plopping down for a fast kebab snack at Kebapeilnica Destan, from 1913 considered to have the best kebabs in Skopje. (Delicious food despite the surly waiters.)

The Skopje Fortress (Macedonian: Skopsko Kale), commonly referred to as Kale (from kale, the Turkish word for 'fortress'), is a historic fortress located in the old town of Skopje, the capital of the Republic of Macedonia. It is situated on the highest point in the city overlooking the Vardar River. The fortress is depicted on the coat of arms of Skopje, which in turn is incorporated in the city's flag.
The Old Bazaar (Macedonian: Stara čaršija) is a bazaar located in Skopje, situated on the eastern bank of the Vardar River, stretching from the Stone Bridge to the Bit-Pazar and from the Skopje Fortress to the Serava river. The Old Bazaar falls primarily within the borders of Čair Municipality but a part of it is located in Centar Municipality. As one of the oldest and largest marketplaces in the Balkans, it has been Skopje's centre for trade and commerce since at least the 12th century.
