Kallaste, Estonia / Калласте, Эстония. Красные горы [2019]

Kallaste is a town in Peipsiääre Parish Tartu County, Estonia. It is located on the western shore of Lake Peipus. Most of the population are Russians, 15% being Estonians.

Kallaste was founded in the 18th century as a village of Russian Old Believers. It became a small borough (alevik) in 1921 and a town 1 May 1938.

[RUS] Калласте – маленький эстонский городок на живописном берегу Чудского озера. Статус города Калласте получил с 1938 года, сейчас в нем проживает около тысячи человек.

В переводе с эстонского «kallas» означает «берег», а чуть раньше поселение именовалось «Красные горы» из-за большого числа обнаженного красного песчаника. Именно красный песчаник и является главной туристической заманушкой Калласте!

People at Lake Peipus mostly live from agriculture like onions, tomatoes and potatoes. The region is mostly inhabited by Old Believers, former Russians who believe in a more orthodox christian way than the Orthodox Church of Russia and therefor fled from central Russia to this tiny part of Estonia and other places worldwide. Here in Estonia they can keep their traditions.

I am so in love with this beautiful country, the friendly people and their traditional cuisine. It is a must to visit this beautiful small spot on earth!

SUMMARY

In Eastern Orthodox church history especially within Russian Orthodox Church, the Old Believers or Old Ritualists (Russian: старове́ры or старообря́дцы, starovéry or staroobryádtsy) are Eastern Orthodox Christians who maintain the liturgical and ritual practices of the Eastern Orthodox Church as they existed prior to the reforms of Patriarch Nikon of Moscow between 1652 and 1666. Resisting the accommodation of Russian piety to the contemporary forms of Greek Orthodox worship, these Christians were anathematized, together with their ritual, in a Synod of 1666–1667, producing a division in Eastern Europe between the Old Believers and those who followed the state church in its condemnation of the Old Rite.
Russian speakers refer to the schism itself as raskol (Russian: раскол), etymologically indicating a cleaving-apart.
