Cesis/Cecis is One of The Oldest Towns in Latvia & Has One of The Oldest Breweries
After the castle, there was time to walk around Cesis/Cecis, one of the oldest towns in Latvia, with ancient wooden houses still remaining. St. John's Church, sanctified in 1284 and the very picturesque Cesis/Cecis Brewery from 1878. This brewery is the oldest brewery in Northern Europe and is believed to have been founded in 1590! Unfortunately, we could only see it from the outside.
The leaves were just beginning to change in Sigulda and visitors come from all over Latvia in Autumn to see the colors. Instead of three churches in one day, there would be three castles in one day. One down, two to go!
Cēsis, Latvia | The Coolest Little Medieval Town! | Travel Vlog Guide 2018
We explored Cēsis, Latvia which is a Medieval town about 80 minutes from Riga and near other cool landmarks like Sigulda and Gauja National Park. We particularly loved walking around the park, checking out Cēsis Castle, trying beers in Tripus Brewery, and having a cozy meal at Mala Cafe!

Raul Keller 'Brewing' | Cesis Art Festival, Hero Of Our Time, Latvia
The site-specific installation was located in the defunct fermentation hall of the former beer brewery in Cesis housing the art exhibition. The fermentation tanks which had been disassembled and removed left two approx. 3 metre holes in the floor between the two rooms. Two reworked trampolines prepared as membrane-speakers specifically constructed for the holes were installed which turned the two rooms into an open baffle speaker system. This type of soundsystem is able to produce especially low frequencies. Additionally a movement sensor triggered strobe system was fitted in the room as a light source.

Cesis/Cecis Castle, Latvia
Cesis/Cecis Castle is located near Sigulda, the biggest ski area in Latvia. A guide, who also happened to be the person in charge of restoration, led us through the Cesis/Cecis Castle Complex, the former castle of the Livonian Order. Up narrow, steep and winding steps into the towers lit only by lanterns we carried to light the way.
One level had remnants of a painting (extremely faint) depicting Adam and Eve with a SQUIRREL at the bottom instead of a snake. Unusual to say the least. Most of the castle was off-limits because of the restoration but it was still interesting. The lanterns were so much fun (felt like a night watchman) and was the best part. Call me a Philistine...
Latvia Celebrates it's 90th Anniversary 1918 to 2008
Congratulations to the Republic of Latvia on its 90th Anniversary, November 18, 2008.
Thousands turned out in chilly freezing temperatures to view the National Armed Forces parade.
680 Armed Forces and Home Guard soldiers, the Border Guard, the police and the State Fire and Rescue Service officers, as well as soldiers from several NATO countries' armed forces took part in the parade on the Daugava River Embankment in Riga's Old Town.
Solo Female Traveler's Guide To Lativa, Riga & Beyond
In this short Latvia travel guide video, I share highlights from my solo female trip to the country.
Before visiting, I had no idea what to expect! A few travelers told me there was nothing to do, but wow, were they ever wrong.
In my one-week trip to Latvia, I couldn't fit in half of things I wanted to experience!
Not only is Latvia's capital of Riga enchanting, with its diverse architecture and cobbled Old Town, but the country is so lush, offering numerous opportunities to take outdoor adventure day trips.
Want to see for yourself what makes Latvia such an enchanting destination for solo female travelers -- and honestly all travelers in general?
Watch the video above. And don't forget to hit subscribe -- and the little bell -- if you like what you see.

Most tourists to Latvia spend their time in the capital of Riga's charming Old Town, with its street buskers, cobbled roads, lively eateries, and medieval architecture. What I found beyond Old Town was also unforgettable. Like the gorgeous Alberta Street. The social Labietus Brewery. Numerous lush parks filled with birds. The big, bustling central market. Hip cafes around Old Saint Gertrude's Church. And seriously gorgeous views from the Akmens Bridge. Oh, and watching the sunset from the 26th story Skyline Bar was a true trip highlight. I also explored nature outside of the capital. New experiences like visiting the seaside resort city of Jurmala on the gulf of Riga. Scenic hiking in Kemeri National Park. I mean, how gorgeous is this place? And how cute are these ducks? I went overnight jungle trekking with the Latvian Element, a challenging but eye-opening experience. Something else incredible? Paddle-boarding at sunrise on Lake Kisezers, with SUP Adventures, as well as wandering castle ruins in the medieval town of Cesis. If you love enchanting places, then you'll love Latvia.
LATVIA: AIR B'N'FEAST EP.1 - MASSIVE markets in Riga!
The dark horse of the Air B'n'Feast world, Latvia has floored me with the massive markets in Riga, the deep and storied history, the friendly people and the diverse architecture.
In this new season of Air B'n'Feast I kick things off with a visit to the beautiful Baltic country of Latvia. Tucked away in a quiet part of Europe, Latvia has a lot to offer. It's capital city, Riga, has a variety of areas that are great for exploring, from its Old Town, with it's cobbled streets, to the Art Nouveau district with its elaborate and beautiful architecture.
The impact of history unfolding over Latvia is evident, beautiful buildings from across years that have been altered and manipulated still stand today, and the effects of pre-1989 occupation still clear, but slowly fading.
The markets where I purchased my produce are UNESCO heritage sites; the four hangars in which the markets lie are old Zeppelin hangars, 4 of 9 left in the world!
There are stories to be told and heard in Latvia, its worth a visit for the history alone.
But then there is the food. My summer experience was a shock, with the markets TEEMING with vendors selling high quality ingredients of local and eastern origins. Everything was rich, so full of flavour! *apparently* the biggest open air market in Europe, the selection was an experimenters dream!
So yeah, definitely visit Latvia. It's off the beaten track at the moment (I don't think they've really tapped into the tourist potential yet) so get in now, and see it. The Latvian Open Air Ethnographic Museum is a must-see - absolute peace and quiet with very few people around, and you can even swing in for a Latvian brew.

Baroque Buildings and History of Vilnius, Lithuania
Guided tour over at scaffolded Saint Annes, it was beautiful day to continue exploring Vilnius on our own. Cathedral Square is the historical heart of Vilnius with the Bell Tower, Palace of the Grand Duke of Lithuania and monument to Gediminas (the founder of Vilnius and Trakai).
Time to sit on lively Pilies Street, eat ice cream, enjoy the ambience and buy some amber. Don't bother shopping for the best deal. Walk into an amber shop and if you see something that appeals, just buy it. Either that or devote a month to comparison shopping!

From Tallinn to Riga, Part2 - Latvia 4K Travel Channel
After passing the border with Latvia, which was just a signpost, the landscape doesn't change very much. That changes, when we reach Sietiniezis in the Gauja National Park. On a length of 500 m, 15 m high sandstone cliffs have formed here. In a shady setting with built-in barbecue areas, you can spend hot days in a pleasant atmosphere. This has been recognized by bees, which build small holes into the cliffs, thus making them look like a sieve. This gave the cliffs its name, Sietiņiezis means sieve rock. The rocks were shaped 350 million years ago.
Less pleasing are the graffitis left by irresponsible visitors in the rock.
After a short drive, we reach the old town of Cesis, first mentioned in 1224. As a successful trading city, it joined the Hanseatic League in the 14th century.
When we enter the city, we first see the ruins of the ancient Ordensburg. From 1237 to 1561 it served as the residence for the Order's Master and thus headquarters of the order.
During the siege in 1577, the garrison destroyed the castle to prevent it from falling into the control of Ivan IV of Russia. After reconstruction, it was finally destroyed in 1721 during the Great Northern War. One built a new castle right next to it. It now houses the Museum of History. Adjacent is the oldest brewery in Latvia, Cēsu Alus brewery.
A large square in front of the St. John's Church, built in 1281, forms the town center.
We stroll through an old settlement, past a Byzantine church, to the castle grounds.
Our penultimate stop is in Sigulda. Here we visit the Sigulda Luge and Bobsleigh Track. It has been used for world championship races and is a replica of the Olympic Sarajevo Olympic Bobsleigh and Luge Track. Also without snow and ice, it is an impressive building.
At 21.30, after an almost 13 hours drive, we reach Riga. Olga drops us at our hotel. She has done extraordinary work. Despite her circumspect way of driving, she has explained the country, the lifestyle and the history of Lithuania and Latvia. She was both a driver and a tour guide in one person. Thanks for this exceptional ride, which we can only recommend to anyone.

Olga setzt uns an unserem Hotel ab.

Debut album Heads up OUT NOW
Raised in a musical family, Annique was singing before she could even speak, and began composing harmonies with her sister when she was just five years old. She formalised her vocal education a few years later at the Academy of Contemporary Music in London, networking and learning to perform live in front of a large audience. This experience, combined with Annique’s instinct for harmonising and enhancing songs, led to a career as a much sought-after backing singer, working with some of her favourite artists such as Gorillaz and Mike Skinner.
After being introduced to multi-instrumentalist Koby Israelite through a mutual friend and realising they could spark up an electric collaboration, Koby and Annique teamed up to work on a series of songs which became their magnificent debut album Heads Up, due out on German label Asphalt Tango in early 2015.
Drawing on Koby’s gypsy and eastern influences as well as Annique’s deep jazz heritage which ranges from Ella Fitzgerald to Chaka Khan, the duo’s collaboration features ‘french café’ vibes, bittersweet pop and heartfelt soul. Songs such as ‘Fallin’’ have infectious energy and a striking melody, while others like ‘Fly Little Bird’ pack emotive punch with an eerie twist.
Having performed all over London, Annique’s popularity is set to skyrocket with the release of Heads Up which will be a powerful launch to her solo career, and an opportunity for this promising singer to step out of the shadows into the limelight which she deserves.
A tour through the Baltics!
A ten-day blast through the Baltic states! The journey started off in Finland with the dining, pubs, and nightlife of Helsinki and continued with a ferry ride over to the aesthetically-pleasing medieval town of Tallinn in Estonia. A day trip out to a drowning prison in Rummu and over to Lahemaa National Park provided some fresh air before an evening of beverages and sustenance back in Tallinn. From there I flew down to Riga, hopped in the rental and drive to Cēsis to drink in the ruins of the oldest brewery in Latvia and a few other attractions in and around town. I then returned to the beautiful facades, cathedrals, and central market of Riga before departing for Lithuania. After landing in Vilnius, I immediately began a drive through the countryside to the Curonian Spit perched along the Baltic Sea. From there I headed inland past the Hill of Crosses and more beautiful castles before settling in for the amazing food, beverages, and buildings throughout Vilnius and the Republic of Užupis.
Time lapses, video, and photo clips were shot with a GoPro Hero 3+, iPhone 6, Sony a5100, and Mavic Pro. You can find details on the itinerary, reviews, and photos on:
