Sintra Valley l Portugal I Moorish Castle l Vlog l Urdu & Hindi
Assalam Alaikum ! (Peace be with you) Welcome to Travel Diaries (Safar Nama).
Today, we reached Sintra Valley - A town and municipality in the Greater #Lisbon region of #Portugal, located on the Portuguese Riviera. #Sintra is a major tourist destination in Portugal, famed for its picturesqueness and for its numerous historic palaces and castles. Interestingly, It is also one of the wealthiest municipalities in the country because of its 19th-century Romanticist architecture, historic estates & villas, gardens, and numerous royal palaces & castles, which resulted in the classification of the town and its historic passage as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The population of the municipality in 2011 was 377,835 in an area of 319.23 square kilometers (123.26 sq. mi).
Moorish Castle
Due to shortage of time, I had to choose among Pena National Palace, The National Palace of Portugal and Moorish Castle. I choose Moorish #Castle due to my love with history. Another reason might be is an attempt to know what capabilities Muslims possess back in their hay days which are nowhere to be found now a days. Now, I silence my philosopher and let’s talk about the castle. The castle was built in 8th or 9th century by #Moorish. Moorish are people of Morocco and North Africa. It is nothing but an ill planned military check post to be very precise. It stretched from south west to North west and on top of the hill. Keeping military needs at center, double walls structure with passage made of granite in between. Strategic location of the castle made it pivotal point in all military campaigns of #Al-Andulus back in the days.
The subterranean cistern, accessible from a three-meter accessway, is 18 meters long by 6 meters wide, and 6 meters in height, where water was collected from openings on its roof. The interior walls are punctuated by five rectangular towers and one circular tower. A small door, normally covered in underbrush, opens to the northern façade of the castle, corresponding to the Traitors Gate. In the southwest corner is the highest tower, known as the royal tower. There are few food and wheat storage areas in middle of castle, few are still visible, and others are lost in time.
Brief History
In 1031, after the loss of #Córdoba to the Almoravid dynasty, the king of Badajoz opted to transfer to Alfonso VI of León and Castile a few territories on the Iberian peninsula (among them Sintra) in order to gain an alliance with the Christian king. This transfer did not result in any security, and the castle was lost to the invading Almoravid. After the conquest of Lisbon (1147) by forces loyal to Afonso Henriques, the castle surrendered voluntarily to Christian forces. During the second half of the 12th century, the chapel constructed within the walls of the castle. In 1375 King Ferdinand I of Portugal, under the counsel of João Annes de Almada, ordered the rebuilding of the castle. While the structure was well fortified by 1383, its military importance was progressively diminishing as, more and more, the inhabitants were abandoning the castle for the old village of Sintra. While the chapel was still being used a center of religious activities at the beginning of the 15th century, and the castle was completely abandoned. The 1755 Lisbon earthquake caused considerable damage to the chapel and affected the stability of the castle.
In 1975 archaeological excavations in the Chapel of São Pedro were begun by the cultural services of Portugal, which discovered the existence of medieval funerary tombs, dating to the turn of the 13th century. A dispatch by the Ministry of Culture, on 26 June 1996, declared the area of the Castle as a zone of special interest and will be taken care by ministry of culture.
I hope you will get some feel through this video what I am talking about! Enjoy!!!

Sunset at Lisbon Castle | Solo in Lisbon E1
My first day in Portugal and I decided to head up the hills of Alfama and explore Castelo de S. Jorge - an old castle towering over the city. Once there I got to walk around the ruins of an old palace and climb some of the well preserved towers and outposts of the castle for some amazing views of the city.

The Statue That Overlooks It All | Alfama to Almada | Solo in Lisbon E6
All week I'd been admiring the Christ is King Statue and wondering if I'd be able to make it across the Tagus River to pay it a visit. On my last day in Lisbon that's exactly what I decided to do - I boarded a boat to Almada, walked along the old abandoned docks, caught a ride in the panoramic elevator and bought a ticket to access the observation deck of Portugal's highest statue. From there - what a view over Lisbon and the 25th April bridge.
Before that adventure started however, I took a stroll around the oldest neighbourhood of Lisbon - Alfama, and explored everything from the extravagant churches to narrow alleyways leading down towards the river. I also got to see what's left of the Carmo Convent - a 14th century church partially destroyed by the 1755 earthquake.
Lisbon is an incredible city and there is a lot more to see and do than I anticipated. It also has real character - made up of its long history, distinctive culture and colourful neighbourhoods, as well as its hilly topography.

LISBON: Chiado & Bairro Alto districts (3/5) Portugal
CHIADO is a traditional shopping area that mixes old and modern commercial establishments, mostly located at the Rua do Carmo and Rua Garrett. The Chiado is also an important cultural area, with several museums and theatres. Chiado is the name of a square and its surrounding area in Lisbon/Lisboa (Portugal). The Chiado is located between the neighbourhoods of Bairro Alto and Baixa Pombalina.
In 1988, the Chiado area was severely affected by a fire, when 18 buildings were partially or totally destroyed. Thanks to a renovation project that lasted more than 10 years, the affected area has now virtually recovered.
The Santa Justa Lift (Portugese: Elevador de Santa Justa) is an elevator, or lift, in Lisbon and connects the higher Largo do Carmo with the lower streets of the Baixa.
The Convento da Ordem do Carmo (English: Convent of Our Lady of Mount Carmel) is a former-Roman Catholic convent. The medieval convent was ruined during the sequence of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, and the destroyed Gothic Church of Igreja do Carmo on the southern facade of the convent is the main trace of the great earthquake still visible in the old city. The Carmo Convent and its Church were built between 1389 and 1423. It is located in the Chiado neighbourhood, on a hill overlooking the Rossio square and facing the Lisbon Castle hill. It is located in front of a quiet square Largo do Carmo, very close to the Santa Justa Lift. Nowadays the ruined Carmo Church is used as an archaeological museum (Museu Arqueológico do Carmo).

BAIRRO ALTO (literally: Upper District) is a central district of the city of Lisbon, Portugal. Unlike many of the civil parishes of Lisbon, this region can be commonly explained as a loose association of neighbourhoods, with no formal local political authority but social and historical significance to the urban community of Lisbon.
In the last decades of the 20th century, there was a significant socio-cultural dynamic in the area, as a great part of the nightlife became dependent on the restaurants and bars of the quarter. Lisbon's city council made extensive remodelling and repairs to the district, resulting in the opening of new restaurants, clubs and trendy shops. While cars were restricted in the district (except for residents and emergency vehicles), many young people began to live in the Bairro; it is generally a youth-oriented heart of the sub-culture and nightlife of Lisbon.
The Bairro Alto district is generally delimited in the south by the Calçada do Combro and Rua do Loreto, west by Rua de O Século, north by Rua D. Pedro V and east by Rua da Misericórdia and Rua São Pedro de Alcântara. It is, topographically, a plateau with medium elevation of 76 metres (249 ft) terminating in the north, with accentuated slope towards the south.
The Glória Funicular (Portuguese: Ascensor da Glória) is a funicular railway line in the parish of Santo António (Lisbon), operated by Carris. It connects the Bairro Alto district with the Pombaline downtown (at the Restauradores Square. The tram system is situated along an axis that slopes 17.7%, that extends from the Avenida da Liberdade to the Rua de São Pedro de Alcântara, crossing a built-up area of 19th century buildings, including the Palácio Foz and the Misericórdia of Lisboa. The funicular includes two cars that operate parallel along two axes, that descend and climb simultaneously.

Lisbon Skyline (Lisboa) in Portugal (Panoramic view from Castle of São Jorge)
Lisbon is the capital and the largest city of Portugal. It is the westernmost large city located in continental Europe, as well as its westernmost capital city and the only one along the Atlantic coast. Lisbon lies in the western Iberian Peninsula on the Atlantic Ocean and the River Tagus, and has a population of 547,631. About 3,035,000 people live in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (which represents approximately 27% of the population of the country).
Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world, and the oldest in Western Europe, predating other modern European capitals such as London, Paris and Rome by centuries. Julius Caesar made it a municipium called Felicitas Julia, adding to the name Olissipo. Ruled by a series of Germanic tribes from the 5th century, it was captured by the Moors in the 8th century. In 1147, the Crusaders under Afonso Henriques reconquered the city and since then it has been a major political, economic and cultural centre of Portugal. Unlike most capital cities, Lisbon's status as the capital of Portugal has never been granted or confirmed officially – by statute or in written form. Its position as the capital has formed through constitutional convention, making its position as de facto capital a part of the Constitution of Portugal.
This video is shot from the Castle of São Jorge. This is a Moorish castle occupying a commanding hilltop overlooking the historic centre of the Portuguese city of Lisbon and Tagus River. The strongly fortified citadel dates from medieval period of Portuguese history, and is one of the main tourist sites of Lisbon. The castle of Lisbon, locally named Castelo de São Jorge is located right on top of the tallest of Lisbon´s seven hills of the historic centre of the capital city, above the old Moorish quarter. The castle is clearly visible from a long way off and it is famous for its panoramic views of the city and surrounding countryside. The Atlantic can be seen behind the 25 de Abril Bridge, Ponte 25 de Abril and on clear days the Padrão dos Descobrimentos and the Tower of Belem, Torre de Belém are visible in the distance.
During the second crusade, the castle was the last stronghold in the defense against the Christian army, led by Portugal's first king, Afonso Henriques. He finally captured the castle in 1147 with the help of northern European crusaders after a seventeen-week-long siege. It was a landmark victory in the Reconquista, the recapture of land on the Iberian peninsula from the Moors.
The castle became the main residence of the Portuguese kings and in 1502 a palace was built within the castle walls to provide the monarchs more comfort. The castle was severely damaged by the 1755 earthquake, but it was partially renovated and new buildings were added. The castle continued to be used for military purposes until the early twentieth century. Its present appearance dates back to the 1930s, when it was restored to its medieval state.
In this video you can see the skyline of Lisbon and the famous 25 de Abril Bridge (Ponte 25 de Abril 25th of April Bridge). This is a suspension bridge connecting the city of Lisbon to the municipality of Almada on the left (south) bank of the Tejo river. It was inaugurated on August 6, 1966, and a train platform was added in 1999. Because it is a suspension bridge and has similar coloring, it is often compared to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, US. It was built by the American Bridge Company which constructed the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, but not the Golden Gate. With a total length of 2,277 m, it is the 27th largest suspension bridge in the world. The upper deck carries six car lanes, while the lower deck carries two train tracks. Until 1974, the bridge was named Salazar Bridge (Ponte Salazar). The name 25 de Abril commemorates the Carnation Revolution.
How to get to the castle:
Either climb up the hill from Rossio or take the tram 28 or the bus 37 to get there.

Great Time At Lagos - Along The Portuguese Riviera
A bus trip to Faro, Portugal followed by a rental car to the Portugal coast provided some great experiences seeing the Portuguese Riviera on the Atlantic seaboard during their early autumn.
Portugal Sintra, A Fairy Tale Town
This is Sintra, a mysterious place in Portugal just outside of Lisbon
Links to the locations and more about the prices below ↓↓↓
As we have been traveling through Portugal the past few weeks, we decided to stop in Sintra, just half an hour away from Lisbon to shoot a video about Quinta da Regaleira, a very unique place in Europe.
We were in Sintra for nearly a week. The city seems very small on the map but if you want to see each castle and its surrounding gardens and walk through the city also, while having some time to breath and have a relaxed meal, making it all in a day is impossible.
Here is a link to the city's official travel site ( this is where we took most of our information)
EXPLORE...
Food:
What you need to try while in Portugal :
Bacalhau, which is a codfish dish with which the Portuguese are ABSOLUTELY OBSESSED!
Alheira de Mirandela, which is a sausage stuffed with bread and very cheap. Doesn’t sound like much, but give it a try, you’ll probably like it!
Pastel de nata, well what can I say, I am obsessed with pastries so this is a MUST. They have a lot more than this one, but if you’re not into sweets, please give this one a try *hint* it’s crunchy and creamy at the same time, so yeah, deliciooous!
As for places to eat, we heard that these one are really good (as I have mentioned earlier I was too full after eating too many pastries to try to stop for a full meal)
Curral dos Caprinos
AZENHAS DO MAR - this one has also a gorgeous view just by the ocean
Culture: How to act like a local
Hike, go to cafes and enjoy the gardens. Really the locals here really take advantage of the beautiful free gardens surrounding the castles.
Nightlife: When and where to go…
Yeah, about that… if you’re a city person I would say there is nothing here that qualifies as a real club so heading back to Lisbon seems worth it if you wanna party.
Nature: Wildlife, parks, and beaches
THIS IS THE PLACE FOR IT.
Sintra has both forest and beaches. The beach is gorgeous and relaxing, but you can find that outside of Sintra also. If you come here save your time for the gardens and the castles. Let yourself enjoy the royal palaces for a while, it is said to bring harmony into one's heart, why else would the royal family come here so often?
Transport:
There are three ways to move around: bus, tuk-tuk or walk. The bus is the cheapest but takes an incredible amount of time, so go for the tuk-tuk if you don’t feel like walking for hours. We really enjoyed the walk, but we had a lot of time on our hands.
Budget:
This is a very cheap place to visit, depending on your accommodation choices. Quinta da Regaleira is the cheapest one to visit and most fun because is more of an adult mystery house, but the others are equally beautiful just slightly pricier. With a minimum of 27 euros and a maximum of 120 euros, the accommodation really makes a difference. The season your are visiting can also play a big part in this, plan ahead- that always saves money! Purchasing tickets online saves you 5%.
ACTIVITIES AND SIGHTSEEING

Exploring Lisbon's Ancient Aqueduct | Solo in Lisbon E3
Lisbon of the past always suffered from a lack of clean, drinking water so in the early 1700's King John V decided to build a vast aqueduct to bring water in from the Sintra Mountains. After spending some time in the city centre I decided to take a train out to the ancient reservoir and aqueduct, now a museum dedicated to telling the story of how these incredible structures came to be. I spent the afternoon exploring the main reservoir building and walking across the section of aqueduct that crosses the Alcantara valley.

Things to do when in Lisbon (Like us on facebook and voyagelight.com)
Walk streets of Alfama
Get lost in countless narrow streets of the oldest district of Lisbon - Alfama. Go up and down the hilly lanes and take your time to admire buildings covered in painted ceramic tilework called Azulejo. Not only these tiles fulfil their decorative function, but also serve as temperature controlling element. These small pieces are responsible for the magical atmosphere. Tiles can be found everywhere - outside, inside, covering churches’ walls, museums, bridges or regular houses. A signature artwork of Portugal has plenty variations of colours and patterns, often creating a bigger picture. Just wander around and grasp the artistic feel of the place. You will come across many graffiti too.
Reach the castle
St. George’s Castle is located on the hill and is surrounded by the Citadel.
This is the place not to be missed due to amazing views and the historical values of Medieval Moorish Castle. From the citadel you can see the whole city, the Tagus River and the 25 April Bridge.
Checkout the city from different viewpoints
Lisbon is definitely one of the cities which are pleasant to watch from a higher point. Its hilly terrain gives plenty of options from where you can grasp as much as possible for the eyes. Viewpoints, in Portuguese - Miraduoros, are located in any upper part of the city, so patience in incline walking is necessary, but one’s efforts will be rewarded. Miraduoro da Graca (Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen) is definitely worth recommendation, among many others: Miraduoro da Nossa Senhora do Monte, São Pedro de Alcântara, Miraduoro de Santa Luiza or Miraduoro de Santo Estevao.
Spend time in Bairro Alto and Chiado
As normally expected of the central area of any city, in Bairro Alto and Chiado walks, squares, architectonic attractions are accumulated. Everything a tourist is looking for can be found. If you would like to buy something, eat a local dish or just wander around busy streets - this is the place to be. One can observe the city’s flow during the day and enjoy partying at night.
Raise above the rooftops using Santa Justa Elevator
Located centrally and a landmark of Lisbon, the lift gives the opportunity to admire the city form a much more different perspective. One can see the vivid rooftops and the castle hill from here. Although this is lower than some of the viewpoints, it allows to understand the levels of terrain and buildings arrangement.
Visit the main square and the Triumphal Arch
Enter Praca do Comercio through the Triumphal Arch and see its greatness. Climb to the top of the arch to see the main square from the bird’s flight view. Get to the river bank, marvel at the Red Bridge. Feel the vibe of the place and enjoy it. Listen to men playing instruments, see tourists taking pictures. Be a part of this historically, politically and strategically important spot on Lisbon’s map where once crucial decisions for the city have been made.
See famous Lisbon trams
Another hallmark of Lisbon are the old-styled (most frequently yellow) trams. Walking around, one can see them passing by or actually take tram number 28 which goes through the most popular sights. Another possibility is to seat down comfortably by one of the streets along the tramline and watch them, in the meanwhile having something to eat and drink. That’s an alternative for those who hate packed trams.
Cross the Red Bridge and see the statue of Jesus
Sanctuary of Christ the King is in Almada district. To get there you either need to go through the 25 de Abril Bridge or get a ferry. The other side of the river is more modern – this is a good opportunity to see the discrepancy between new and old Lisbon. Monument of Christ was and inspiration taken from the Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro. The 110 meters high monument is dedicated to Jesus Christ’s heart. Under the Statue there is a Chapel of Our Lady of Peace (Nossa Senhora da Paz).
Find Torre de Belem and Monastry De Jeronimo
This 12 meters x 30 meters tower was a part of a defence from 16th century. Right now it stands at the bank of Tagus river, but previously (before the river flow change) was on a small island serving as support for the defence fortress. Close by is the Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline style Monastery. If around there, it’s worth seeing due to exceptional architectonical style and details. Both, Tower and the Monastery are the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Belém District | Eleven Minutes from Lisbon | Solo in Lisbon E5
After a couple of busy days I decided to jump on a train at Cais do Sodré and head over to the Belém district - a place where once upon a time sailors and seafarers set sail for new lands during the Portuguese age of discovery. The area is very different to central Lisbon, instead of a busy and frantic urban jungle you'll find gardens, quiet monasteries, elaborate palaces and old watchtowers used to guard the Tagus River as it meets the Atlantic Ocean.
I bought a ticket at the Cais do Sodré train station and for less than 5 Euros I made the 11 minute train journey across to Belém.
