Now, I've written before about ABC Syndrome, Another Bloody Church, that malaise I sometimes get when confronted by yet another visit to yet another church when touring any country. I was raised Catholic so I know what a church looks like. Believe me. ABC can also be applied to castles, though they NEVER bore me. It's a castle!
But if you're in Cuenca, a visit to both the new and the old cathedrals is a must. They both hold so much of the city's history, culture and character.
The old cathedral is called Iglesia de El Sagrario and was built in 1557, the same year as the founding of the Spanish colonial city. The bright white cathedral was strictly reserved for those with Spanish blood; the locals had to worship outside or take their prayers somewhere else.
Inside, the old cathedral is stunning. High ceilings, ancient painted frescoes, a colossal pipe organ, side altars filled with antiques and religious artefact's. The whole place is a museum, it's no longer used for worship, so you are free to wander and marvel at the architecture and decorations. The floor is pink marble and the walls are covered in brightly painted wooden coverings.
The mural above is the oldest Catholic church mural in South America and dates back to the 1500s.
The old cathedral is a reminder of a more divisive time in Cuenca's history when the Spanish colonists held sway over every aspect of local life, including where people could worship.

New and old cathedrals of Cuenca, EC
In 1567 construction was started on the Old Cathedral of Cuenca (Iglesia del Sagrario or Church of the Shrine). It was reserved for the people from Spain. In 1880 construction for the New Cathedral of Cuenca began and lasted for almost a century. It was built because the Old Cathedral of Cuenca became too small! When it was constructed, 9,000 of the 10,500 inhabitants could fit inside. The park itself was named after an 18 year old independence hero 110 years after he died

Cuenca, Ecuador is considered by many the The World's Best Retirement Haven as named by International Living and Live and Invest Overseas in 2009. Rich culture, low cost, low crime rate, and year round spring-like weather put it at the top. The city has also been awarded UNESCO's distinction as a World Heritage Trust site. Cuenca attracts more foreign residents than any other city in Ecuador.

Cuenca Hot Springs Novaqua Tour - Baños Azuay Cuenca Ecuador
Amelia and JP VLOG 69: After a busy day of work, we decided to go to Novaqua in Baños Azuay just outside of Cuenca Ecuador. It's one of several spas in Baños Azuay with hot springs pools. While we enjoy the other places, we prefer Novaqua because it's adults only.
If you have kids or enjoy listening to kids play, we recommend Hostería Durán, which is just a short walk from Novaqua. It has a nice kid's pool, as well as a thermal bath room that's perfect for relaxing. The last time we went to Hostería Durán, it cost $8 per adult and I believe they also have kids rates.

If you want to find cultural richness in Ecuador, there is no better place to visit than Cuenca. UNESCO designated the city Cultural Patrimony of Humanity on December 1, 1999, and later in July 2001, Cuenca received the title of the Cultural Capital of the Americas for the year 2002.
Parque Calderón is Cuenca’s central plaza and the spot around which city life revolves. The impressive New Cathedral, with its massive blue domes, dominates the square. On the opposite side, stands the proud Old Cathedral which dates back to 1557 when the city was founded.
Another interesting thing to check out here is Panama Hat Factory. Would you ever guess that Panama hats are not made in Panama? Well, it’ true, they are made here, in Ecuador! The factory on Avenida Gil Ramírez Dávalos, near the bus station, crafts some of Ecuador’s finest hats.
Enjoy the video and let us know which country you're watching from!

The most beautiful city in Ecuador: Cuenca, Azuay Province
Cuenca (or Santa Ana de los Ríos de Cuenca) is the capital of Azuay Province and is Ecuador's 3rd largest city. Cuenca is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is known as the most European Ecuadorian city due to the abundance of Spanish colonial architecture. Cuenca is located in Ecuador's highlands at about 8,000 feet (2,500 meters) in elevation and is known for Panama hats (paja toquilla), the Barranco or Tomebamba River waterfront, and the abundance of colonial churches, including the Catedral Vieja (Old Cathedral) and the Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción (Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception).
Some other nearby attractions that you will not want to miss include the Cajas National Park, the Girón Falls (el Chorro de Girón), the town of SigSig for Panama Hats, and the town of Chordeleg for handmade jewelry.

Palm Sunday, Cuenca, Ecuador #4
April 1, 2012 At 9am the procession began from the Church of El Carmen de la Asuncion, Santuario Mariano, Cuenca. Ecuador and proceeded to the adjacent new Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, led by Archbishop Luís Cabrera Herrera, O.F.M. (since 20 Apr 2009).
The faithful were all holding a form of plant, and many included some actual palm, which apparently is now an endangered plant. We estimated the wall-to-wall crowd to be 4,000 although a search indicates capacity to be 9,000 so we may be way off.
