Gomel Jewish Cemetery turns a dump...
Dear friends!
The Prudkovsky Jewish cemetery in the center of Gomel is turning into a trash dump. The city authorities have no resources (or desire) to put it in order.
Starting Monday, November 22, 2010, Beit Yakov, the Gomel Jewish community, will begin the cemetery restoration process, starting with garbage cleaning and cutting down saplings. The Jewish cemetery is very big. There are roughly 10,000 graves there, in an area of 11 football fields. We won't be able tosolve the problem well without your support.
We will be grateful for any donation directed to support this project. You can make Your donation by clicking the DONATE button on jewishgomel.com or mitzvatemet.com, or through PayPal transfer to e-mail jewishs615@gmail.com. We will be glad to answer any of your questions and listen to suggestions on how we can make this more effective.
You are welcome to contact us by email at kehila.gomel@gmail.com or by telephone at +375 (232) 77-65-22.
Let's take care of our deceased relatives together.
Faithfully yours,
Josef Zholudev

The haunting memorial to three million Belarusians died during the Second World War. On March 22, 1943, the entire population of Khatyn village was massacred by the 118th Schutzmannschaft Nazi battalion. The massacre was not an isolated incident. Hundreds of Belarusian settlements were burned by the Nazis and some or all their inhabitants were killed as a punishment for collaboration with partisans.

SUMMARY
=======
The occupation of Belarus by Nazi Germany started with the German invasion of the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941 (Operation Barbarossa) and ended in August 1944 with the Soviet Operation Bagration. The western parts of the Belorussian Soviet Socialist Republic (as of 1940) became part of the Reichskommissariat Ostland in 1941, but in 1943 the German authorities allowed local collaborators to set up a client state, the Belarusian Central Rada, that lasted until the Soviets liberated the region.

Heroes of Belarus Remembered
Belarus is celebrating Independence Day, timed to coincide with the anniversary of its liberation from Nazi occupation. As a result of the Lublin–Brest Offensive 75 years ago, the Soviet Red Army started to clear the Nazi German forces from western Belarus and Eastern Poland. On July 3, 1944, they liberated Minsk.
