Places to see in ( Menton - France ) Old Chateau Cemetery
Located on the site of Menton’s mediaeval château, which
no longer exists, the cemetery stands at the top of a hill. The graves of Menton families lie alongside those of rich
foreign aristocrats from the Belle Époque.
William Webb Ellis bought the land for his grave in the Vieux Chateau Cemetery on the coast overlooking the town. Occasional guided tours on Thursdays (depending on the date).
This is a lovely old cemetery. If you're in the mood for a walk, continue up the hill to Cimitiere du Trabuquet. It's right at the top. Even prettier views, and the graves of some famous people including artist Aubrey Beardsley.

Bonsoir a Menton... the pearl of France.
Menton (French pronunciation: [mɑ̃tɔ̃]; Occitan: [meˈta], written Menton in classical norm or Mentan in Mistralian norm; Italian: Mentone) is a commune in the Alpes-Maritimes department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France.
Situated on the French Riviera, along the Franco-Italian border, it is nicknamed la perle de la France (The Pearl of France).
The Menton area has been inhabited since the paleolithic era, and is the site of the original Grimaldi Man find of early modern humans, as well as remains of Neanderthals and Cro-Magnons. In Roman times, the Via Julia Augusta, a road connecting Placentia (now Piacenza) with Arelates (now Arles) passed through Menton, running along the Rue Longue in the old town. The first major settlement occurred during the 11th century CE, when the Count of Ventimiglia constructed the Château de Puypin (Podium Pinum) on the Pépin hill, north and west of the modern town center. During the 13th century, the seigneury of Puypin fell to the Vento family of Genoa who built a new castle along the Roman road, now the site of the Vieux-Château cemetery, providing the core around which the current town grew. Menton was thus incorporated into the Republic of Genoa. The first mention of Menton dates from 21 July 1262, in the peace treaty between Charles of Anjou and Genoa. Its position on the border between the Angevin-ruled Provence and the Republic of Genoa, which at the time claimed Monaco as its western limit, made it a coveted location. --- 20140826131851

Menton is a town on the French Riviera in southeast France. It’s known for beaches and gardens such as the Serre de la Madone garden, showcasing rare plants. East, the hilly, medieval old town is home to Basilique Saint-Michel, with its 18th-century bell tower, and the ornate facade of La Chapelle des Pénitents-Blancs. Nearby, the Musée Jean Cocteau collection Séverin Wunderman displays works by poet Jean Cocteau.
Menton is the The Lemon Festival Capital of the World, located very close to the border of France and Italy and in many ways is more Italian than French. It has its own microclimate, generally milder than the rest of the French Riviera, and became in the late Nineteenth Century a place where Northern Europeans with TB came to either regain their health or to die. As a result its cemetery is filled with the graves of notable Englishmen, Germans, Russians. The old town is largely pedestrianised which adds to the charm of this sedate resort.
Last stop on the Côte d’Azur before Italy, the seaside town of Menton offers a glimpse of what the high life on the Riviera must have been like before the developers moved in. With its sunny climate, shady streets and pastel mansions – not to mention a lovely old port – it’s one of the most attractive towns on the entire coast. Menton’s old town is a cascade of pastel-coloured buildings. Add a fantastic museum dedicated to the great artist and film director Jean Cocteau, as well as several excellent restaurants, and Menton really is a must.
Alot to see in Menton such as :
Jean Cocteau Museum Although it was previously in a bastion near the port, the new museum is a purpose built building designed by the Italian Architect Rudi Ricotti and houses an incredible modern interactive display of drawings, ceramics, tapestries and a large mosaic by the artist.
Salle des Marriages In the town hall, the civic wedding hall is decorated completely in murals by Jean Cocteau.
The charming old town is compact and largely pedestrianised.
Several impressive gardens dotted through the town including those at Garavan (Olive trees in Parc du Pian, Jardin Exotique, Villa Fontana Rosa).
Casino and the magnificent hotels Royal Westminster and Ambassadeurs.
Cimetière du Vieux Chateau Russian Orthodox chapel, grave of William Webb Ellis - founder of Rugby football, view over town.
The perched villages inland (Ste Agnes and Gorbio).
The Mare Nostrum brewery in Castillon.
Fête du Citron There's a lemon party and you're invited! Lemon-related festivities over several days in February.

Le Cimitière de Menton (Côte d'Azur)
I'm going to break my little rule of not putting on YouTube what I put on Dailymotion, and share this one with you because I like it a lot.
One of the reasons this cemetery has so many young people in it, and stones in different languages (such as English) is that many came to Menton (or Mentone, as the British called it) for their health and it didn't work out. The inventor of rugby, Webb-Ellis, is here, also. I don't know why, but it was a fun surprise seeing that old, oft-visited tomb.
The famous Baroque church in Menton is down below a bit, in the very, very old quarter of the city, which has ancient roots.
Up here at the cemetery, you get a spectacular view of the Mediterranean and the Maritime Alps. Menton is a terrific place to visit and stay on the French riviera.
The clouds coming over and down from the mountains suddenly was a typical scene here. Mountaintops and their perched villages would disappear for a time entirely, even on hot, sunny days. There are two dry seasons per year here, so two Springs. It's an interesting microclimate. The contrasts are dramatic.

The old town perched on a hill features narrow medieval lanes. It is very well kept and preserved. We walked through the old town in an uphill direction until we reached the cimetière du Vieux-Château also known as Menton Castle Cemetery. For some, out of season, Menton is a ghost town. For us, it’s a peaceful and friendly place because we prefer the quiet streets to the summer bustle of Nice or Cannes. From Menton, it’s easy to reach other towns on the French Riviera. For example, you can take a day trip to Monaco and Nice or go to Eze Village. Italy is very close! You can just walk to Italy from Menton — the Italian border is only two kilometers away from the old town. It takes mere 15 minutes to get to the nearest Italian town Ventimiglia by train. From there, a train can take you to San Remo or even to Genoa.

Places to see in ( Menton - France ) Jardin du Palais Carnoles
The Jardin d'agrumes du Palais Carnolès is a two-hectare public garden devoted to citrus trees in the town of Menton, in the Alpes-Maritimes Department of France. It is classified as one of the Notable gardens of France by the French Ministry of Culture. It contains 137 varieties of citrus trees, including orange trees, bitter orange trees, grapefruit, mandarin orange and lemon trees.
The site of the garden, on the plain of Carnolès next to the convent of Madone, originally surrounded the summer residence of Prince Honoré II of Monaco. In 1725, he constructed the garden and planted different varieties of citrus trees. The present collection of trees was planted in 1997.
Surrounding the once summer residence of the Princes of Monaco, the garden of the “Palais Carnolès” contain the largest citrus fruit collection in Europe.
The town’s Gardens Department wants to promote local botanical heritage, drawing special attention to the citrus collection at the Palais de Carnolès: “It’s very interesting from both a botanical and a protectionist point of view, consisting of over 100 different varieties of fruit : 11 different kinds of lemon, 6 of citron, 20 of orange and 8 of lime, as well as manderines, clementines, kumquats, bergamots, Seville oranges, grapefruits, and pomelos, spread out over 340 trees.
Such biodiversity has led the Palais de Carnolès’ citrus collection to be recongised by the CCVS (Conservatory of Specialized Vegetable Collections — “collection agréée”) and the Ministry of Culture (“Jardin Remarquable”).”

Travel France - Touring Chateau Pierrefonds in Oise
Take a tour of Chateau Pierrefonds in Oise, France -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
An ancient and luxurious medieval castle lies in the northern commune of Compiegne, France.
The stunning Chateau Pierrefonds standing today was built in the late 14th century and has seen many eras of demolition and reconstruction.
A significant low point in the castle's history was during Louis XIII's reign, when the manor was met with extensive destruction.
Shortly after, in 1810, the castle was bought by Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte for the exceptionally low price of 3000 Francs.
As a result of this purchase restorations began on Pierrefonds which continued into the late 19th century.
This medieval, Romantic-style castle is now a popular museum in which visitors can tour the castle's impressive architecture and lavish interior.
