Ancient City of Aleppo (UNESCO/NHK)
Located at the crossroads of several trade routes from the 2nd millennium B.C., Aleppo was ruled successively by the Hittites, Assyrians, Arabs, Mongols, Mamelukes and Ottomans. The 13th-century citadel, 12th-century Great Mosque and various 17th-century madrasas, palaces, caravanserais and hammams all form part of the city's cohesive, unique urban fabric, now threatened by overpopulation.

Aleppo (Syria) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Aleppo in Syria.
Sturdy walls and gates protect the ancient historic city of Aleppo in Syria. The narrow lanes in the old town, and its many historic buildings, have retained all the character and charm of a mediaeval metropolis. The city has a flourishing economy which is mainly due to its favourable location at the junction of several important trading routes. In 1169 the Umayyade Mosque was re-built at the command of the Zengid monarch, Nureddin, but only its impressive forty five metre high minaret has survived to the present day. The Baits are true architectural gems of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, noble and often palatial-looking buildings that once belonged to the city’s elite classes. Today Aleppo shines out once again in the glory of its six thousand years of history and continues to highlight its unique significance as one of the most important cities in the Orient.

City of Aleppo (Syria) (ﺣﻠﺐ) before and after the war...
Alepo (ﺣﻠﺐ)
Hoje a realidade dessa cidade ícone é vazio,

Aleppo/Syria
Aleppo is the largest city in Syria[3] and the capital of Aleppo Governorate, the most populous Syrian governorate. With an official population of 2,301,570 (2005 official estimate), expanding to over 2.5 million in the metropolitan area, it is also one of the largest cities in the Levant.[4][5] For centuries, Aleppo was Greater Syria's largest city and the Ottoman Empire's third, after Constantinople and Cairo.[6][7][8] Although relatively close to Damascus in distance, Aleppo is distinct in identity, architecture and culture, all shaped by a markedly different history and geography.
Aleppo is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world; it has been inhabited since perhaps as early as the 6th millennium BC.[9] Excavations at Tell as-Sawda and Tell al-Ansari, just south of the old city of Aleppo, show that the area was occupied since at least the latter part of the 3rd millennium BC;[10] and this is also when Aleppo is first mentioned in cuneiform tablets unearthed in Ebla and Mesopotamia, in which it is noted for its commercial and military proficiency.[11] Such a long history is probably due to its being a strategic trading point midway between the Mediterranean Sea and Mesopotamia.
The city's significance in history has been its location at the end of the Silk Road, which passed through central Asia and Mesopotamia

The monumental Citadel of Aleppo, rising above the suqs, mosques and madrasas of the old walled city, is testament to Arab military might.

Ancient city of Aleppo: Before and after
CNN's Hala Gorani looks back on Aleppo, Syria to compare the condition of the ancient city before and after conflict.
Syria before and after war-Aleppo city
Before Syria’s ruinous civil war struck Aleppo, the country’s largest city was a busy commercial powerhouse and a proud historic center – its long heritage on display in ancient landmarks still used by modern day traders, travelers or worshippers.
But the war that erupted across Syria in 2011 exploded into Aleppo in the summer of 2012, when rebel fighters took over the east of the city.

A Moment in Aleppo, Syria
Prior to the Syrian Conflict, Travel Tales visited the famed city of Aleppo, Syria losing themselves in a labyrinth of bustling passageways and chatting with merchants and locals. They described their experience a 'magical and memorable' and lucky for us they have gathered up some of their travel videos to share with all of us.
So on behalf of Travel Tales, enjoy a excerpt of their time in Aleppo, once Syria's largest and most populated city which sits in the north-western portion of the country close to Turkey's southern boarder and one of the longest inhabited cities with some scholars claiming it dates back to the 6th millennium BC. While it's history is long and vast we offer just a glimpse of life in the ancient metropolis with their video.

Syria's old Aleppo markets revived after devastation
Life is emerging again in Aleppo as Syrians decided to rebuild the city's old markets.
Destruction and Western sanctions didn't discourage the people from rebuilding with a strong will.
One of the rebuilt markets is al-Saqatiyah souk, a part of an area listed as UNESCO's World Heritage Site.
Re-opened in October this year, Shop owners can continue their businesses after years of closing.
The War in Syria: Ancient city of Aleppo lies in ruins
In 1986, the ancient city of Aleppo, one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities, was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site. But battle after battle for control of the Syrian city has ripped it apart, and left most of it in ruins. Locals have appealed for international help, but Sarah Balter explains why the money still hasn't come.

ALEPPO, SYRIA | What's It Like to Be a Tourist in ALEPPO in 2019?
Travelling to Aleppo was one of the toughest travel experiences I've had. The city and the people who call it home have gone through a nightmare in recent years.
I'm very lucky to have been able to visit Aleppo as an independent, foreign traveller and I hope that this video can convey some of what I experienced there, from my personal perspective.
Please note: this vlog documents my personal trip to Syria, as a tourist. It is not necessarily a travel recommendation, nor a commentary on the political climate, nor an attempt to show the ordinary life of Syrian citizens.
Thank you for watching! If you liked this vlog, come follow me on Instagram for daily updates from destinations that most other tourists don't go to:

Syrian rebels advance in Aleppo's old city
In this exclusive report, Anita McNaught follows members of the Free Syrian Army deep into the heart of Aleppo's old city.
Aleppo: An Ancient City of Enduring Appeal
The Syrian city of Aleppo has sadly received a lot of coverage recently due to the widespread destruction from years of civil war. In spite of this, the city is still one of the great architectural treasures of the Middle East, which has drawn travelers and scholars for centuries.
When museum founder Charles Lang Freer visited Aleppo in 1908, he was delighted, writing on June 19 to his business partner Frank Hecker, “Aleppo is a charming surprise – a beautiful ancient city, and in every way more attractive than I had fancied.” Among the hundreds of photographs he collected of Asia and the Middle East are twelve lovely views in and around Aleppo.
Likewise, the German scholar Ernst Herzfeld traveled many times to Aleppo during his decades of research and exploration in the Middle East. The extraordinary number of drawings, photographs, and research notes in the Herzfeld collection is an important repository for the study of the city’s architectural heritage, so imperiled by recent conflicts.
In support of the people of Aleppo, this month we have combined selections from these two collections into a slide show, currently on display in the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery.
Syria rebels 'withdraw from Old City' of Aleppo- BBC News
Rebel fighters have pulled out of territory they’ve held for the last four years in Aleppo's historic Old City, close to the ancient citadel.
Their retreat marks another significant advance by the Syrian military and its allies. On Tuesday they captured the district of Shahaar. A small group of journalists were taken there on Wednesday by the Syrian army, including our chief international correspondent Lyse Doucet .
