Indonesia Tsunami: Sulawesi hospitals at full capacity
At least 1,407 people died in the aftermath of the magnitude 7.4 earthquake and tsunami that struck Indonesia’s Central Sulawesi on Friday, September 28.
Of the deaths, 821 were reported in the provincial city of Palu and 11 in Donggala regency, the National Disaster Management Agency said on Sunday.
Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the agency, said the death toll was expected to rise because quake-affected districts near Palu, such as Donggala, Sigi and Parigi Moutong, remained inaccessible to rescuers. Kompas reported damage from the earthquake and the following tsunami severely damaged power, telecommunications and transport infrastructure in the region.
Instagram user Wahab Abdul Rauf, who took this video at the Donggala fishing harbour, told Storyful that the tsunami waves that hit the town on Friday were quite big and destroyed a number of houses on the seaside.
Rescue teams now face a race against time to free people trapped in the rubble of wrecked buildings and the authorities fear the death toll could reach the “thousands”.
The tsunami hit the island of Sulawesi following a 7.5 scale earthquake under the ocean.
Palu lies inside a narrow bay and experts believe the shape of the coast could have concentrated the impact of the wave.
Janine Krippner, a volcanologist at Concord University, told National Geographic: “That can amplify wave height as it channels water into a smaller area.”
The quake that led to the tsunami could have been caused when sections of the earth’s crust grinded together.
However, experts are sceptical whether this alone would cause such huge waves heading towards Palu.
Scientists believe landslides, above or below water, may have also contributed to the scale of the tsunami.
A tsunami can travel quicker than a jet liner – meaning communities along a coastline like Sulawesi's can be wiped out before they can escape.
Indonesia frequently suffers earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis due to its position on the ‘Ring of Fire’ – an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin.
Many countries make up the Ring of Fire but Indonesia is seen to be the most vulnerable to natural disasters.
In December 2004, a massive magnitude 9.1 earthquake off Sumatra island in western Indonesia triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries.
Last month, a powerful quake on the island of Lombok killed 505 people.

Elderly survivor in Palu recalls the moment the quake struck
(1 Oct 2018) A 60-year-old retired civil servant from Palu on Sunday recalled the moment the magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.
Suhar Yanto said he had been outside his home doing the washing before Muslim prayers, when the ground suddenly began to shake violently, bringing down the building.
His family was inside.
After it stopped I called out to my daughter 'Sara! Where are you?', he said.
It isn't clear what happened to his family.
As he spoke, rescue and recovery teams carried away the body of an earthquake victim through the ruined homes of the neighbourhood.
So far more than 800 people have been confirmed dead, but officials fear the death toll could climb much higher.

S. Korean missing in Indonesia found dead and relief assistance gathers pace
인니 강진 실종교민 사망 확인…국제사회, 인도네시아 지진참사 구호에 '속도
A South Korean national who had been missing since a twin quake-tsunami disaster hit Indonesia... was found dead on Thursday.
Search and rescue efforts are ongoing, with the international community working to provide much needed support.
Hong Yoo reports.
The South Korean man who had been missing in Palu, Indonesia for six days after since the quake and tsunami, was found dead Thursday under the rubble of the hotel where he had been staying.
The South Korean Foreign Ministry announced that his body was identified by a visual inspection.
After speaking with the man's relatives, the South Korean foreign ministry will help the family arrange a funeral and bring the family back to South Korea.
But many in Indonesia are still waiting for their loved ones to be found.
The disaster took the lives of more than 14-hundred people and counting, while thousands have been left homeless.
In response, the world is moving faster to send relief.
The government of Indonesia says more than 20 countries have offered help.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has allocated 15 million dollars from its Central Emergency Response Fund.
Mark Lowcock, the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, expects that aid to provide urgent assistance to vulnerable women and children.
The UN has urgently deployed staff to the region to help the Indonesian government's own relief efforts by proving food and water and by setting up sanitary facilities.
International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is planning to provide Indonesia with more than 22 million dollars in relief funds.
Also, U.S. President Donald Trump spoke with Joko Widodo, the Indonesian president, and promised immediate assistance.
The U.S. State Department says it has already provided an initial relief fund to the Indonesian authorities and dispatched government disaster experts to understand what additional help they may need.

Emergency response extended by two weeks as Indonesia recovers from quake
(11 Oct 2018) Indonesia's disaster agency spokesman said on Thursday that the disaster relief period, due to expire on Saturday, would be extended by two weeks to October 26.
Indonesia's search for victims buried in neighbourhoods annihilated by an earthquake and tsunami is nearing its end almost two weeks after the double disasters hit the remote city of Palu in central Sulawesi.
Authorities had said the official search and rescue effort would end on Thursday and planned prayers in areas of the city such as Balaroa, Petobo and Jono Oge where the force of the quake liquefied soft soil and tore apart neighbourhoods.
But the national disaster agency's spokesman, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, told a news conference it would continue for one more day after requests from families of the missing.
He said it will take two years for the region to rebuild and recover.
The agency said the official death toll had risen to 2,073 as of Thursday, with most of the fatalities in Palu.
Officially, 680 people are missing but officials have acknowledged the number could be several thousand because hundreds of homes were sucked into the earth.
Save the Children's affiliated organization in Indonesia said there could be as many as 1,500 children missing.
Firefighters, soldiers and other personnel searched the rubble on Thursday in a last push to find victims. They also burned debris and excavators dug into the tangled remains of buildings.
Heavy equipment hasn't been able to operate in neighbourhoods where the earth turned to mud, hampering the search effort, and many bodies have decomposed beyond recognition due to the tropical heat.
Miles (kilometres) of coastline were trashed by the tsunami that followed the September 28 quake, with houses swept off their foundations, trucks crumpled and numerous ships beached.
