The Old Town Hall can truly be said to live up to its name - the cornerstone was laid in the year 1556. Since 1909, and still today, it has served as the Museum of City History. The building includes a ballroom, which is 53 metres (174 ft.) long.
It has been used in the past for the royal festivals of Saxon's princes, patrician weddings, craftwork festivals, and student balls. Court proceedings have also been carried out there. Currently, among other events, the ballroom is used by the City of Leipzig for cultural events and concerts. The market place is easily reachable via the City Tunnel.
The Old Town Hall lies directly on the market place. The farmer's market is normally held here every Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00am to 4:00pm, with fresh products from throughout the region. More information can be found at the website of the Market Department (Marktamt). The market place is also the site of the Christmas Market, the Easter Market, the Wine Festival and the Market Days.

Leipzig, Germany has a New Town Hall which cannot be mistaken for its predecessor, the Old Town Hall.
The name of the building can be misleading, it is actually over 100 years old, with construction beginning in 1899.
Neues Rathaus, as it's known in German, is the seat of the local government.
It is located in Leipzig's southwest historic old town area.
The main tower of the building measures 361 feet, making it the largest town hall in the world.
It took six years to complete the New Town Hall, the extraordinary results of which are blatantly visible.

The City History Museum is the historical memory of the city of Leipzig and consists of a network of several museums, each with different topics. Leipzig's grand Altes Rathaus (Old City Hall), is one of the most important Renaissance buildings remaining in Germany.
The city had a town hall from as early as the middle of the 14th century when the citizens of Leipzig felt that a building was required to house a large hall, the council chambers, the offices of the town clerk, city archives and municipal administrative offices, etc. However, the current Renaissance structure of the Altes Rathaus, built in 1556, can be attributed to Hieronymus Lotter, who was a businessman and several times Mayor of Leipzig. The building was renovated between 1905-1909.
The ballroom of the Old Town Hall is 53 metres long and was previously used for celebrations by the Saxon princes, aristocrats weddings, craft festivals and student balls. Court proceedings also took place here. At the top of the building, just below the roof, is an inscription that goes all round the building. It is the longest building inscription in all of Germany. Together with the Council Chamber the ballroom has one of the most attractive interiors in Leipzig and hence its usage for grand festivities.
With the building of the New City Hall in 1905, the city's administrative services were moved to the new building. Between 1905-1909, the Altes Rathaus underwent substantial reconstruction to house the Leipzig Museum of City History. The Leipzig Museum keeps records of all developments and events in Leipzig from the Middle Ages up to the present time. The Museum is one of Leipzig's most visited sights.
The Altes Rathaus is also used for other cultural and concert events in the city of Leipzig. Along the arcade there are many shops selling souvenirs and gifts.

Leipzig New Town Hall is the seat of the Leipzig city administration since 1905. It stands within the Leipzig's ring road on the southwest corner opposite the city library at Martin-Luther-Ring. The main tower is, at 114.8 meters, the tallest city hall tower in Germany.
In 1895 the city of Leipzig was granted the site of the Pleissenburg by the Kingdom of Saxony to build a new town hall. A competition was held for architectural designs with the specification that the Rapunzel tower silhouette of the Pleißenburg be retained. In 1897 the architect and city building director of Leipzig Hugo Licht was awarded the job of designing it.
The foundation stone of the New Town Hall was laid on 19 October 1899. The town hall was built in the style of historicism. The hall is notable as the location of numerous mass suicides during the final days of the Third Reich. The town hall features as a backdrop in the Alfred Hitchcock film Torn Curtain.

Walking in LEIPZIG / Germany - Central Station to Inner City - 4K 60fps (UHD)
The city of Leipzig in Saxony / Germany is a favourite together with Dresden in the state. This vibrant trade-show city has a lively, attractive city center which can be seen here in this walking tour.
We start at the Central Station with the shopping mall and head to the inner city with all the arcades. The Leipzig City Hall at the market square looks nice as it gets darker as we also get to the Mädler Passage. This historic arcade features statues portraying the legend of Goethe's Dr. Faustus at the famous Auerbach’s Cellar.
We head back via several side streets to the train station completing this 1 hour+ walk.

The Paulinerkirche was a church on the Augustusplatz in Leipzig, named after the Pauliner, its original Dominican friars. It was built in 1231 as the Klosterkirche St. Pauli for the Dominican monastery in Leipzig. From the foundation of the University of Leipzig in 1409, it served as the university church. After the Protestant Reformation it was donated to the university and was inaugurated in 1545 by Martin Luther as the Universitätskirche St. Pauli (University Church of St Paul), later also called Unikirche. Johann Sebastian Bach was director of music for festal (holiday) services in 1723−25.
The church survived the war practically unscathed but was dynamited in 1968 during the communist regime of East Germany. After the reunification of Germany, it was decided to build a new university church on the site in the shape of the former church. A new building, the Paulinum (formally: Aula und Universitätskirche St. Pauli, i.e. Assembly Hall and University Church St. Paul), was built on the site beginning in 2007.
In 1229, friars of the Dominican Order settled in Leipzig and started building the Paulinerkirche in 1231 as their abbey church, within the city walls close to the gate Grimmaisches Tor. It was built in the typical fashion of a church of a Mendicant order of the 13th century, with a choir and a nave with two aisles in the Langhaus. The church was consecrated in 1240 by archbishop Wilbrand from Magdeburg to St. Paul. The church was part of a larger complex of medieval buildings which together formed the Dominican monastery of Leipzig.
The new buildings at the university's main campus are inspired by the form and shape of the old church. The newly built heart of the university includes a room for common prayer and regular religious services situated exactly at the place of the former church. The whole complex has a double function as a church (using the historical name Universitätskirche St. Pauli - University Church St. Paul) and as an assembly hall (Aula), the short name for the whole building is Paulinum. The first service in the new church was held on 6 December 2009 (the second Sunday in Advent), it included a performance of Bach's cantata Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland, BWV 61.
