Coombs Old Country Market
Our first time visiting this place. Great selection of fruits, tourist attraction with goats on the roof, lots of pictures taken at the place. They have items from all over the world including food, kitchen items, decor, art items, toys, clothing, just to name a few. It also has a bakery and a restaurant with a jukebox. In the summer they have pygmy goats that graze on the green roof. They are open from March till the end of December, make sure to stop by for a visit.
Vlog trip to Coombs Old Country Market. Will we see GOATS?
While visiting my parents out on Vancouver Island. My mom took us to a popular country market in Coombs, BC. They are known to have Goats on the roof. They sell all sorts of food things, so it was great for me! We had lunch there and picked up a few items to bring home. We did end up seeing goats, but not on the roof.

Wikipedia:
Coombs is a small community on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, situated on provincial highway 4A approximately 10 km (6.2 mi) west of Parksville. Coombs is home to approximately 1,327 people and is renowned for its Old Country Market (which features a family of goats living on the roof), Butterfly World (which includes a small indoor tropical rainforest), and the Coombs Bluegrass Festival held every B.C. Day weekend.
The history of Coombs goes back many years. The Ford House which is the old log house situated on the old Island Highway is dated back to early 1900. The house was completed in 1911. Next to the Ford House is the old General Store which also houses the General Post Office. The Fair Grounds is an active place in the summer when the Fall Fair rolls around. The Rodeo Grounds just up the highway heading towards Port Alberni is a successful and active place during the summer months. The railway is also a huge part of the history of Coombs. Along with the United Church and just over the French Creek Bridge is the French Creek School which is now closed as a public school was a huge asset to the community for over 100 years.

Goats on the sod roof! The Old Country Market has one of the widest selections of grocery, deli and bakery goods as well as an endless selection of interesting stuff you just can't find under one roof! Eclectic is the word that comes to mind.
Right on the old Highway 4A to the West Coast, you'll see the cars lining the sides of the road. It's that popular. In addition to the Country Market there's a number of other shops that sell surfboards, ice cream, glassware, flowers, fruit and plants and massive planter pots. And to top it off is the fine Italian dining Cuckoo Trattoria and Pizzeria with it's tall ceiling and massive outdoor patio. Recommended!
This Island special place is 41 minutes from Living Forest Oceanside Campground & RV Park (livingforest.com). Driving directions:

Abandoned Mini Golf Course (Coombs Market, BC)
Behind the Coombs Country Market near Parksville on Vancouver Island, is an old, abandoned mini-golf course that hasn't been open since 2005! It's time to explore the place, play a round of mini golf, and talk a bit about creativity and the goats on the roof that you can find here!

Goats on the Roof - Coombs, British Columbia
The Coombs Old Country Market is a landmark of Coombs, BC with a mixture of shops and eateries for locals and visitors, and home to the goats on the roof!
Excerpt From Old Country Market website:
The original market was created by Kristian Graaten. Kris and his wife, Solveig, emigrated with their children to Vancouver Island from Norway in the 1950s. Kris, who grew up in the small community of Lillehammer, was inspired to include a sod roof in his design of the market. Many Norwegian homes and farm structures are built directly into the hillside with the sod roof becoming an extension of the hillside. With the help of sons, Svein and Andy, and son-in-law, Larry, Kris unwittingly began to build what would become perhaps the most famous sod-roof building in the world.
And now the question, “What if we put goats on the roof?”
Well, it was the weekend of the Coombs Fall Fair and the grass was getting rather long. Legend has it that, after a few glasses of wine, Larry suggested that they ‘borrow’ some goats to ‘mow’ the grass and perhaps provide some entertainment for passing cars. Needless to say, the goats became permanent tenants of the Coombs market that weekend and have been there for more than thirty years. Each spring, a trip of goats makes their home on the roof, entertaining both locals and visitors from all over the world.
Also referred to as a ‘green roof’, this environmentally friendly method of building provides insulation (retains warmth in colder weather) and promotes evaporation (has a cooling effect in the summer). But most importantly, for us at least, it creates a wonderful habitat for our goats.
The Old Country Market is now owned and operated by Larry and Lene Geekie and their family. ‘Goats On Roof’ has become one of the top tourist destinations in British Columbia, an honour that we owe to our loyal customer base and to our dedicated staff (including the goats!). We are committed to providing a positive and respectful environment for both customers and employees alike.
