The old Courthouse was preserved and restored in 1976 to create a community museum and accommodate a visitor information centre.
The Old Court House Museum is operated by the Guysborough Historical Society which was founded in 1973 by a group of local citizens, who joined together to protect Guysborough's legacy.
The purpose of the Guysborough Historical Society is to collect, preserve, study, and exhibit those objects that serve to illustrate the story of Guysborough County and its people
In addition to operating the Museum, the Society holds public meetings and lectures on matters of local historical interest, supports the publication of local histories, sponsors student summer employment, and organizes community fundraising activities.
Guysborough is located on the scenic Marine Drive halfway between Canso and Port Hawkesbury at the head of Chedabucto Bay. Guysborough County is one of the largest counties in Nova Scotia.
About 500 people live in this picturesque village and although small, Guysborough is the backbone for a number of communities in the surrounding area. It is the administrative centre for the County as well as the main meeting place for community events.
