2011 Decatur, Alabama's African American Pioneers
New Tourism Video Highlights Decatur's African-American Heritage
Decatur, Ala. -- The Decatur/Morgan County Convention & Visitors Bureau (DMCCVB) has released a new video featuring noteworthy African-Americans and their contributions to the city of Decatur in the areas of religion, education, employment, military, athletics, and political and social change. Named after the patriotic hymn penned by the Johnson brothers as part of the celebration of Abraham Lincoln's birthday in 1900, Lift Every Voice and Sing chronicles the many stories and experiences of former slaves, quasi-free slaves, civic leaders, and educational visionaries from pre-Civil War days to today's leaders who have made a difference with their voice and hard work.
Noted African-Americans can be traced back prior to the Civil War when area slaves paid for the construction of their own house of worship. Spanning over 180 years, the video highlights important milestones including the steps taken to an equal and quality education for all and the publishing of the town's first African-American newspaper. It also documents the transition for African-Americans from a predominately agricultural workforce into skilled positions, as well as the many struggles which led to basic rights enjoyed by all today, such as freedom of religion, the right to a jury of one's peers, and the right to vote.
Our goal for the video is to educate our citizens and visitors on those African-Americans who paved the way for a better life for future generations to embrace and enjoy, said Tami Reist, president of the Decatur/Morgan County Convention and Visitors Bureau. It is important to document the city's heritage and pay tribute to these inspiring leaders, yet our history is somewhat lacking as it relates to the role of African-Americans and their contributions. The video will play a key role in preserving the stories and experiences while showing how far we have come as a community.
Lift Every Voice and Sing was developed and produced by Freedom Light Productions of Decatur, Ala. Contributing to the video include Melinda Dunn of Decatur Parks and Recreation, John Allison of the Morgan County Archives, Wes Torain, and local historians Rev. Wylheme H. Ragland, Peggy Allen Towns, and Phil Wirey.
The video may be viewed on the DMCCVB website at decaturcvb.org under Videos, or on the Alabama Tourism Department's website at alabama.travel. For more information, call 800.524.6181.

48 Hours in Decatur, Alabama: Possibly Alabama's Most Underrated City??? (condensed version)
We went to Decatur, AL, over the Memorial Day weekend, which is the ideal weekend to see what this underrated city has to offer. Friday night, we went to the entirely free Daikin Festival. Saturday morning, we went to the Alabama Jubilee to watch the hot air balloon race. Unfortunately, it was already too hot for the balloons to fly. After that, we walked through the arts and crafts fair and the car show. Since we were on that side of Point Mallard, we walked down the biking and hiking trail. Later, we went to Rhodes Ferry Park and Delano Park, where the kids played in the splash pad. Saturday evening, we went back to the Alabama Jubilee to watch the hot air balloon glow. Then Sunday, we took in a few more sights, before heading back home.
Decatur is nicknamed The River City, and is located in North Alabama on the banks of Wheeler Lake, along the Tennessee River. It is the largest city and county seat of Morgan County. Footsteps; Part One, History of the City of Decatur
The History of the City of Decatur, Georgia
The first part traces the history of the City of Decatur from its origins as a county seat for DeKalb County, Georgia. It tells of how Decatur became such a vital part of the state of Georgia and how its communities developed. Joan Scott narrates a brief history to the viewers in a very casual setting by the Fifth Avenue Elementary School which is no longer there. It shows how development can remove the history of a people.

Old State Bank Building Exterior - Decatur Alabama
Through 170 years of often turbulent history, the Old State Bank has survived as a proud monument to Decaturs past and the development of banking in Alabama. The decision to build a branch of the Alabama state bank in Decatur was one of the first events in the towns early history to lift Decatur from relative obscurity to a role of importance in the state. The impressive Classic Revival structure symbolized the ambitious plans early leaders envisioned for the town. A unique feature of the bank was the requirement that the head cashier reside in a 2nd floor apartment to provide security and stability. The building is being restored to reflect this original use, and features period room settings and displays that interpret life in the 1830s.
With guidance from the City of Decatur, the Old Bank Board of Directors and the Parks and Recreation Department, the Old Bank offers a variety of programs and services for people interested in local history. Guided tours, guest lecture programs, classes and special events are all offered at the site. Old Bank staff members are also available to speak with local civic and school groups, and welcome your requests for assistance. Additionally, the building and grounds are available for private rentals that meet event specifications.
The building is open Monday-Friday from 9:30-12:00 and 1:00-4:30*. Additional hours are available by advance request. Tour groups are encouraged to make advance reservations for their visit to the building by calling 256-350-5060.

Fort Decatur 1814 Alabama Territory
Let me make this clear, because apparently I have to repeat myself for all the videos I do. I am NOT an experienced film maker and only have a cheap, hand-held sony camera. Do not expect high quality filming from me. I just want to get the word out there about some history and historical sites. If anyone wants to have me make better quality footage, maybe you can buy me a camera that better stabilizes for over $700 to $1000.
1814 Fort Decatur, Alabama Territory
In the woods of Eastern Alabama are these spectacular fort earthworks.
From:
Fort Decatur
Colonel Homer V. Milton ordered the construction of Fort Decatur, located on the banks of the Tallapoosa River, in the spring of 1814. The fort was one of a chain of fortifications protecting a supply line stretching into central Georgia.
The site of Fort Decatur lies on the grounds of Auburn University's E.V. Smith Research Center in Macon County, Alabama. It is marked by a stone monument placed by the Alabama Anthropological Society placed in 1931.
Fort Decatur and nearby Fort Burrows are perhaps the two best-preserved Creek War or War of 1812 forts in existence.
The area is heavily wooded, but most likely it was cleared during 1814 so the fort had an obscured view of the river and surrounding area.
Nearby is an Indian Mound, and local folklore is that this is the burial place of James McQueen. Although there is no way to verify the truth with this legend. McQueen was a Scotsmen who joined the Creek Indians around Tallassee Town, Alabama in the late 1600s. He died in 1811 around 128 years old. He was the father of many in the Creek Nation, including being the great-grandfather of Osceola, famous Seminole war leader.
