Burgas / Bourgas - Bulgaria
The town of Bourgas (population: 210 260) is the second district centre on the Black Sea coast. It is situated in the farthest western part of Bourgas bay and is 390 km east of Sofia.
Due to the low level of the coast there are three lagoon-lakes: Atanasovo lake, Bourgas Lake and Mandra lake. The town is situated between the sea and the first two lakes.
The climate of Bourgas is suitable for recreation -- mild winter and long sunny summer. The beaches are covered with dark black curable sand.
Bourgas ranks fourth in size in the country after Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna.
Museums and theatres
The District Museum of History, founded in 1925, houses an archaeological hall with a rich collection of old colonies on the Black Sea coast. There are exhibits of modern history, and photos of eminent Renaissance leaders.
The Art Gallery and the Fine Art Gallery exhibit foreign and Bulgarian art.
The Ethnographic Museum has an interesting collection of traditional masks of Koukeri, costumes typical of the region and ritual accessories.
The Museum of Nature and Science contains many exhibits describing the geological characteristics of the earth, the region, the flora and fauna.
The Philharmonic, the Opera House, and the Theater of Drama are housed in three different buildings and function all through the season. Together with the Puppet Theater they outline the cultural atmosphere in the town.
Landmarks
Away from the busy centre of the city, the shady Sea Garden is a lovely place to stroll in hot summer days. A beautiful forked staircase in verdure leads from the park down to the central beach of the city. The sand is a mixture of various alloys of magnetite, which is the reason for its dark colour. The city also has a northern beach, located close to the Izgrev Quarter, and adjacent to the city's salt-mines.
The St. St. Cyril and Methodius Cathedral is interesting with its marvelous frescos and wooden alter.
Also interesting sights of Bourgas are the Armenian Church, the Catholic cathedral, the church St. Holly Mother, and the church St. Ivan Rilski.
Festivals
• Five days of the Classical German and Austrian music -- at the end of April
• International Theater Festival of Small Forms called Theater in a Case -- May and June
• Three-week Festival of Opera and Classical Music in memory of the conductor Emil Chakurov -- July.
• International Folk Festival and Week of the Arts for Children -- August
• International Pop- and Jazz- Meeting called Bourgas and the Sea -- September

Transport
The airport of Bourgas receives flights from the country and from abroad all through the year. There are flights to Sofia every day. The flight is 40 min.
The railway station in Bourgas has connections with all main directions around the country. The bus station is located next to the railway station. Buses to almost all directions including Sofia leave there.
Distance (in hours) from Sofia:

Krushari Tervel
The municipalities of Krushari and Tervel, which are both located in the northeastern part of Bulgaria, share common natural resources and culture-historic valuables. Unfortunately, most of the tourists aren't aware of the existence of those resources. Nevertheless, the adventurer and the explorer of various civilizations will find here deeply hidden secrets, which will amaze and fascinate them. The municipalities of Krushari and Tervel are an ideal place for a first travel in the region of Dobrich.
The natural phenomenon Suha reka is a must-see for the lovers of eco-tourism. The area is a unique mixture of rock canyon, caves and lakes. Bird watching and observation of the flora can be practiced in the canyon. There are many other interesting landmarks here. Some of the oldest rock monasteries in Europe, which were inhabited during 1st century BC, are located near the riverside of Suha reka. They are situated in natural caves and some of those monasteries are subsequently being further developed. Most of those monasteries are located near the villages of Balik and Onogur. Some scientists consider that the Gyaur evleri monastery (the Christian church) had been a pivot of the monastic life in the region. The Christian complex consists of a rock church and ten monastic, three-storey cells, which are cut out in the rock massif and are joined in between.
For those tourists that are enthusiastic about archeology and history research, there are numerous archeological landmarks. Such landmarks are the fortified villages, the roman road and various necropolises amongst others. The Zaldapa Fortress, which is located in the municipality of Krushari, is the largest fortified antique seat in the area of Dobrudzha. There are such landmarks located in the area as: the Caib Dede sanctuary, which is located in the village of Poruchik Kurdjievo; the two-ritual sanctuary of Mustaf Kanaat- St. Ilia near the village of Alexandria, which is also known as the Teke; the St.Ilia Monastery, which is located near the village of Alexandria. The town museum of Tervel contains 240 works of art, an ethnographic collection of 810 unique exponents and an archeological exposition comprising of 950 antique and medieval objects. Some of the historic landmarks in the municipality of Tervel are an antique fortress near the village of Balik, an antique and medieval fortress Kaleto near the village of Voinikovo, the medieval fortress Skalata near the village of Kladenci and 360 Thracian necropolises amongst others.
Good preconditions for hunting tourism exist in the two municipalities. There are such animal species as red deer, wild-boar, deer, grey hare and quail, as well as a stag of a fallow deer, jackal, fox, wild cat, marten, pheasant and partridge. There are also good traditions in the sphere of international hunting tourism, since on the territory of the municipality exist three hunting parks that are abounding of game, a game breeding station and hunting lodges, rest homes and a residence. The artificial water basins create a good opportunity for the development of sports fishing.
The municipalities of Tervel and Krushari obtain best practices and good knowledge from the municipality of Efkarpia, Greece. The Greek municipality is a fine example of the transition of a typical agricultural region into industrial and tourist region with a focus on alternative tourism.
