A look at the history of Old Fort Parker (near Groesbeck, Texas), where Comanches attacked the Parker family of settlers and kipnapped Cynthia Ann Parker. She would go on to accept the Comanche way of life, and her son Quannah would be one of the last great war chiefs- as well as the peace chief who helped lead his people as they were finally forced onto the reservation.

One Thread of Six Flags - Quanah Parker
On the morning of May 19, 1836, a large party of Native Americans attacked Fort Parker, just a short distance northwest of present-day Groesbeck, Texas. During the massacre, they captured a young girl named Cynthia Ann Parker. She remained with her captors for twenty-four years. During such time, Cynthia Ann accepted the Comanche lifestyle. She prospered and her relationship with a chief gave her three children, including Quanah Parker. Quanah earned the reputation as a fierce warrior. At a young age, he developed a remarkable command of his riding horse. Quanah used his fighting skills in the 1871 Battle of Blanco Canyon as well as the 1874 Second Battle of Adobe Walls. Eventually, he matured into a necessary mediator between the Native Americans and the United States government. Quanah befriended men of great wealth and tremendous influence such as President Theodore Roosevelt and Texas cattle rancher Charles Goodnight. In 1910, he spoke before a large crowd at the Texas State Fair where he told the onlookers, Ladies and Gentlemen, I used to be a bad man. Now I am a citizen of the United States. Quanah died in 1911, but he will be forever remembered as the last Comanche chief.

Comanche Chief Quanah Parker’s Century-Old House Falling Apart
One of the most fascinating people in U.S. history was Quanah Parker, the last chief of the American Indian tribe, the Comanche. He was the son of a Comanche warrior and a white woman who had been captured by the Indians. Parker was a fierce warrior until 1875 when he led his people to Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and took on a new, peaceful life. As VOA’s Greg Flakus reports from Cache, Oklahoma, Quanah’s image remains strong among his people, but part of his heritage is in danger of disappearing.
