IFWTWA Media Trip - Lexington Kentucky
Lexington is known around the world for producing world-class racehorses and fine bourbon. Tour Lexington's Bluegrass Region and discover why the limestone rock base sitting just under the surface our scenic rolling hills might just be the secret ingredient for both industries. On our summer press tour we will visit several equine attractions, a bourbon distillery and a winery, in addition to some of our historic sites.
Our tour started off at Three Chimneys, a private horse farm that incorporates approximately 2,300 acres of pristine farmland along beautiful Old Frankfort Pike. Three ChimnLexington, KY Logoeys is home to 11 world class stallions, including Big Brown, 2008 KY Derby Winner, and Point Given, 2001 Horse of the Year. Lexington's number one attraction, the Kentucky Horse Park, was founded in 1978. The Park operates as a working farm and competition facility and the horse is showcased through daily equine presentations, horse drawn tours, horseback riding, and two outstanding museums.
Did you know that Kentucky produces more than 95% of the world's supply of bourbon! We toured the Buffalo Trace Distillery, one of America's oldest continuously operating distilleries, where you'll learn the history of America's Native Spirit and discover the time honored traditions still used in distilleries today.
Over 200 years ago, Jean Jacques Dufour chose a fertile slope near Lexington and established the first commercial wine grape operation in the United States. Our trip included time at Equus Run Vineyards, voted one of the '16 Best Hidden Treasures of the United States' by CNN TV. Founded in 1775, Lexington's history is rich.
Mary Todd Lincoln grew up in Lexington and was the daughter of a prominent banker. We toured her childhood home, the first site restored to honor a first lady. Overnight accommodations in the heart of Lexington and plenty of free time, will allow attendees to explore Lexington's vibrant downtown.
Of course, all this touring can work up quite an appetite! We will share several of central Kentucky's culinary delights with meals at some of Lexington's long standing locally owned restaurants as well as several of Lexington's newest additions to our culinary scene.
Thank you to all of our hosts for welcoming our organization and for showing us some of the best of what Lexington, Kentucky has to offer!

Frankfort Kentucky 1871 Panoramic Bird's Eye View Map 6607
Panoramic Maps, also known as Bird's Eye View, aerial view, or perspective maps. These were a popular form of art at the turn of the 20th century depicting a city's key points of interest.
Unlike traditional maps, Panoramic maps often highlighted the commercial aspects of a town, while also clearly showing many local residences.
I've had a lot fun looking up places I've been to on these maps -- and I've gotta say - It's amazing just how much things change -- and also how much things stay the same.
