Ghan To Alice
From the Film Australia Collection. Made by Film Australia 1978. Directed by Curtis Levy. A father and son, both rodeo riders, travel on the Ghan train from Marree in South Australia to the Alice Springs Rodeo. It’s an overnight trip through spectacular country, pausing briefly at towns along the way, as they look forward to their final destination, a bull-riding contest between the best rough-riders in the region.
Alice Springs Railway Museum 2000 closed
In 2000 at a visit in the heart of Australia I found a closed railway museum just some miles south of Alice Springs. I jumped over the fence and filmes some sequences of the history of the Ghan railway.

Pedirka is another relic of the Old Ghan Train.
Pedirka is another relic of the Old Ghan Train. Now abandoned, it used to be a watering point for the steam locomotives pulling the Old Ghan.
This station is very remote and was the last Station I had to visit on my bucket list, I can only imagine how hard life would have been like living on this station.
Ochre Pits, MacDonnell Ranges, Alice Springs, Australia
Ochre Pits. MacDonnell Ranges, Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia 2011
The Ochre Pits are a popular tourist destination in Australia's Northern Territory, approximately 100 kilometres west of Alice Springs along the Larapinta Trail. The pits consist of several layers of multi-coloured, layered rock that was traditionally used by Australian Aborigines in ceremonies and played an important role in the continent's economy, being traded with neighbouring clans and countries,[1] in every direction on the continent.
The mine belongs to the Western Arrernte people. Prior to European settlement of the area in 1880, only certain men were qualified to collect the ochre. It was considered some of the choicest ochre - soft to touch, vivid, with a slight sheen to it. The colours range from gold to crimson. After the ochre was mined by the Western Arrernte, it was ground and mixed with Emu fat for ceremonial body adornment.

No 140's Commissioning Run
This video shows the first run No 140, a former Commonwealth Railways standard gauge M19 once of Alice Springs, out on the St Kilda Tramway in Adelaide.
This car was a wreck when I bought it, and after sitting for four years, was overhauled.
Since over haul, she has run the Coffin Bay Tramway, and the Leigh Creek Line from Port Augusta, all legally.
Alice Springs Transport Museums
Lots of old railway and road transport display vehicles here. Alice Springs is very remote and totally relies on long distance transport.

Where did all the sleepers go?
Railway sleepers along the Oodnadatta are the latest craze in recycling. Much to John Murray's horror, when he revisited the Oodnadatta track in 2012, he found some of his favourite spots along the Old Ghan Railway were devoid of his favourite patches of sleepers. The 4WD adventure so popular today is literally burning history! The outback painter from Lightning Ridge is keener than ever to record the history of the Old Ghan Line and spent a couple of hours documenting the sleepers that remain before they too become part of a campfire in the Simpson Desert.
Terowie South Australia Where the Ruling Gauges Met
Terowie South Australia Where the ruling gauges Met. Recent year views of Terowie where the broad gauge from Adelaide met the narrow gauge to Peterborough. In early years of the railways, all goods and passengers to western Australia and Alice Springs had to pass through here and it was once a major change of gauge location where everything had to be transferred between trains;
and the passenger platform was the location where General McArthur made a famous speech heard around the world during World War II
