This is a photo-documentary of Old Man's Cave in Hocking hills of the Appalachian foothills of southeastern Ohio in the United States of America. This geographic-photography was photographed 100 feet beneath the earth's surface. The temperature was sunny, 45F surface and 53F beneath the surface. There are plenty rock formations, waterfalls, riverbeds and sandstone. Old Man's Cave is located in the Hocking Hills State Park. The location is hour southeast of Columbus, Ohio and 20 minutes northwest of Athens, Ohio.
Just how did Old Man's Cave in Hocking Hills get its name?
A recent visit to Hocking Hills and Old Man's Cave - and a visit with Naturalist Pat- gave us the real reason behind the famous Ohio cave's title.

The Legend of Old Man's Cave, part 1
Written and fight directed by Patrick Crean. Shot and directed by A. C. Weary, and stars J. Allen Suddeth, Jeffery Van Thompson, and Allen Schoer. This movie was proposed to (then) students Allen and AC by Paddy, and shot over several weekends in the spring of 1973. Paddy was treated like the royalty he was on location at Old Man's Cave State Park, in southeast Ohio. It was all shot on 1/2 inch b&w reel to reel video, and edited by the head of the OU RTV Department. We had to throw out the original sound track, and overdubbed the voices, did Foley work, and Larry Siegel composed music.I recall 22 hours of work on the sound alone. Part 1 of the movie traces the unlucky journey of a man Going to see his sister, Caroline. and traveling through Sherwood Forest. This definitely has the hallmarks of the student film that it is, but it's nice to see Paddy's work. Part 2 has the final sword fight between Paddy and J. Allen.
Hemlock Bridge Trail & Whispering Cave at Hocking Hills
The new Hemlock Bridge trail in Hocking Hills State Park is now open which leads to Whispering Cave, the second largest recessed cave in Ohio spanning 275’ wide and 105’ tall with a waterfall in the middle. The trail connects with the Grandma Gatewood (Buckeye) trail roughly midway between Old Man's Cave and Cedar Falls. The trailhead is accessible from the parking lot of the former dining lodge.
Hocking Hills State Park, Logan Ohio - Grandma Gatewood Trail - 10-18-12
At Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio, the North Country Trail, Buckeye Trail, and the American Discovery Trail coincide and a six-mile section is designated as the Grandma Gatewood Trail. It connects Old Man's Cave to Cedar Falls to Ash Cave. The Appalachian Trail Museum includes information about Grandma Gatewood in its exhibits and in June 2012, she was inducted into the Appalachian Trail Hall of Fame.
Emma Rowena Gatewood, better known as Grandma Gatewood (October 25, 1887--June 4, 1973), was an extreme hiker and ultra-light hiking pioneer who was the first woman to hike the 2,168-mile (3,489 km) Appalachian Trail from Mount Oglethorpe in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine solo, and in one season.
Family life:
Gatewood was born in Guyan Township, Gallia County, Ohio. She was a farmer's wife who had eleven children and 24 grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild living at the time of her death at 85.
Hiking:
Gatewood hiked the Appalachian Trail in 1955 at the age of 67, wearing Keds sneakers and carrying an army blanket, a raincoat, and a plastic shower curtain which she carried in a homemade bag slung over one shoulder, thus making her a pioneer of Ultralight backpacking. Local newspapers picked up on her story, leading to a profile in Sports Illustrated when she had reached Connecticut and an appearance on the Today Show.
She had read about it in a National Geographic Magazine. I thought it would be a nice lark, she said, adding It wasn't. Another time she complained For some fool reason, they always lead you right up over the biggest rock to the top of the biggest mountain they can find.
She hiked it again in 1960 and then again at age 75 in 1963, making her the first person to hike the trail three times (though her final hike was completed in sections).[2] She was also credited with being the oldest female thru-hiker by the Appalachian Trail Conference until 2007.
In addition, she walked 2,000 miles (3,200 km) of the Oregon Trail from Independence, Missouri, to Portland, Oregon, averaging 22 miles (35 km) a day. She traveled to every state of the continental United States.
In 1970, at age 83, while visiting Appalachian Outfitters in Oakton, Virginia she was asked what she thought about the latest lightweight backpacking gear. Emma advised: Make a rain cape, and an over the shoulder sling bag, and buy a sturdy pair of Keds tennis shoes. Stop at local groceries and pick up Vienna sausages... most everything else to eat you can find beside the trail... and by the way those wild onions are not called Ramps... they are Rampians ... a ramp is an inclined plane.
Gatewood was a life member of the National Campers and Hikers Association and the Roanoke Appalachian Trail Club. She was Director Emeritus and a lifetime member of the Buckeye Trail Association.

Richard and Lucile Durrell Edge of Appalachia Preserve
Cincinnati Museum Center reaches far beyond the doors of Union Terminal. As you travel east through Adams County in south-central Ohio, the rugged hills of the Allegheny Plateau rise abruptly above the countryside. Here, at the Appalachian escarpment, sprawls one of the most biologically diverse collections of natural systems in the Midwestern United States. We have come to call it the Edge of Appalachia Preserve, and we have been working with out collaborative partner, the Ohio Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, to protect this area for more than 50 years.
Ash Cave, USA
Located in the southern edge of Hocking County, Ash Cave can be reached by walking a handicap accessible trail that leads hikers through a beautiful gorge lined with stately hemlocks.
Although the cave was named for the huge pile of ashes found by early settlers in the cave shelter, the source of the ashes is still a mystery.

Ohio Caverns, Ohio, USA
Ohio Caverns is a show cave located 30 miles (48 km) from Dayton, Ohio near West Liberty, in Salem Township, Champaign County, Ohio in the United States. A popular tourist destination and member of the National Caving Association, it is the largest of all the cave systems in Ohio and contains many crystal formations. Approximately 90% of its stalactite and stalagmite formations are still active. The cavern system was originally an aquifer, holding an underground river of melted glacier water. This river eventually receded to lower levels of the ground and is now unseen.
The Ohio Caverns are located in the Bellefontaine Outlier, which is an outcropping of Devonian-age bedrock surrounded by Silurian-age carbonates. Most recently it has been proposed that in post-Devonian times there was a set of active parallel faults that down-dropped a block of Logan County, forming a graben, also called a rift valley.
Continued erosion of several glaciers would have been concentrated on areas around the graben, leaving this area without its protective layer of Bedford shale and more susceptible to erosion. The sunken graben area then became a topographical high, now the highest point in Ohio at the elevation of 1549 feet above sea level.

Seemed abandoned, but it had electricity and ventilation, so...
While walking through the territory of a factory, located in the industrial area of the city, I noticed a weird concrete block with a metal gate on the side of it. I opened it and a ladder climb later I was in a dark, small tunnel leading to an underground bomb shelter/safe house.

Lovelock Cave: Red-Haired Giants of Ancient Nevada - DOCUMENTARY (Part 1)
Remember to 'Subscribe' and click the 'bell' icon to get notifications of new videos: WATCH PART 2 HERE: Hugh Newman follows on from his and Jim Vieira's research in 'Giants On Record' and visits the mysterious Lovelock Cave in northern Nevada. It is said to be where red-haired cannibalistic giants once lived and were killed off by the Paiute tribe hundreds of years ago as written about by Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins. They battled with these giants called the 'Si-Te-Cah' which translates as either thigh-eaters or tule-eaters. Numerous mummified remains were discovered from 1911 onwards when digging for bat guano in the cave and over 20,000 artifacts were also excavated. The earliest dating is at around 2700 BC, but the site could be much older as local caves such as Hidden Cave and Spirit Cave have yielded dates as early as 7,400 BC. The video also includes exclusive aerial footage and rare accounts from private journals and local news reports.
