Monroeville, Alabama - Monroe County Heritage Museum
The old Monroe County Courthouse (now the Monroe County Heritage Museum), designed by prominent Southern architect, Andrew Bryan, was built between 1903 and 1904. The Courthouse is one of two building designed by Bryan (a sister courthouse in LaGrange, Georgia was destroyed by fire), with the architectural style of Romanesque with a Georgian influence. The courthouse was the seat of most county offices and the site of court cases until the construction of the the new courthouse was completed in 1963. Today the building is on the National Historic Register and is a national literary Mecca.
The old courthouse resembles the 1930s courtroom used for Harper Lee's fictional courtroom settings in To Kill a Mockingbird. Although the movie was not filmed here, the interior of the courthouse was used as a reference for the film version of the book, and houses the later acts of the amateur production.

To Kill a Mockingbird and Harper Lee's Hometown - Monroeville, Alabama
Monroeville, Alabama is the Literary Capital of Alabama because it is the hometown of two famous writers, Harper Lee and Truman Capote. Harper Lee was born and raised here, and the town of Maycomb in her Pulitzer Prize-winning book To Kill A Mockingbird was based on Monroeville. Her childhood friend Truman Capote was born in New Orleans, but was raised in part in Monroeville for several years. He was the inspiration of the character Dill in To Kill A Mockingbird.
Monroeville celebrates its ties to the book. In addition to historical markers and a sculpture on the grounds of the courthouse, the city puts on an annual play based on the book.
A movie was based on the book. The set for its famous courtroom scene was based on the courtroom in Monroeville's county courthouse, where Harper Lee's father Finch Lee once defended two black men accused of murdering a white man.

Monroeville Residents Eager for Lee's Second Novel
MONROEVILLE, Ala. (WPMI) As Harper Lee, a Monroeville native, announced plans to publish a second novel, residents in her hometown are responding to the news.
The publication of To Kill a Mockingbird brought instant fame to not only the iconic courthouse, but all of Monroeville. Now residents here are eagerly awaiting the release of Lee's second novel, Go Set A Watchman.
I heard it on the radio and I said get back, I didn't really know, I said I can't believe this, said Barbara Wilson, a Monroeville resident.
Go Set A Watchman is expected to be released in July of 2015. The novel is supposed to be based on experiences in the small community of Monroeville.
It's just a small town and To Kill a Mockingbird went over so well, so I think this one will too, said Ann Mckenzie, a Monroeville resident..
Over the years, To Kill a Mockingbird has brought in thousands of visitors to Monroeville. Despite the constant traffic though, residents continue to paint a grim picture of the current economic state of the town.
The whole area being depressed now because of the closings it's really sad, said Wilson.
The Monroeville courthouse now stands as a beacon of hope for a town in need of a helping hand, and that being extended by Harper Lee.
We're hoping it will pick up, and everything will get better and this should help, said Wilson.
The town is also gearing up for their annual reenactment of To Kill A Mockingbird which is set to take place this May.

TO KILL a MOCKINGBIRD - WikiVidi Documentary
To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel by Harper Lee published in 1960. It was immediately successful, winning the Pulitzer Prize, and has become a classic of modern American literature. The plot and characters are loosely based on Lee's observations of her family, her neighbors and an event that occurred near her hometown of Monroeville, Alabama, in 1936, when she was 10 years old. The story is told by the six-year-old Jean Louise Finch. The novel is renowned for its warmth and humor, despite dealing with the serious issues of rape and racial inequality. The narrator's father, Atticus Finch, has served as a moral hero for many readers and as a model of integrity for lawyers. Historian, J Crespino explains, In the twentieth century, To Kill a Mockingbird is probably the most widely read book dealing with race in America, and its protagonist, Atticus Finch, the most enduring fictional image of racial heroism. As a Southern Gothic and a Bildungsroman novel, the primary themes of To Ki...
