Montenegro olive tree significantly older than Christ
(4 Aug 2019) LEAD IN:
Locals in a small Montenegrin port town claim their landmark olive tree is significantly older than Christ. Aged almost 2,250 years old.
Stara Maslina, as it's known, is now a popular tourist attraction and a protected natural site.
STORY-LINE:
For generations, this olive tree - named Stara Maslina - has been a sacred place for the residents of Bar, a small port town in southern Montenegro.
They've wed, mourned and celebrated under its weary, old branches.
Nowadays, the olive tree is a tourist attraction and a protected natural site, not because of its size, but because of its age.
Stara Maslina is thought to be almost 2,250 years old.
Visitors come to admire the 10-metre wide tree and its interwoven, knotted branches.
The old olive really has been a sacred place for Bar over the centuries and (people) gathered around it, explains local journalist Zeljko Milovic, Journalist, editor of BARinfo portal.
There is a vow that is passed to young residents that they must not pick a leaf or do anything else because their family will be cursed.
Locals say the olive tree was once privately-owned.
Its owner refused to sell it to Italian occupiers during the Second World War, who wanted to dig it up and transport it to Italy.
Instead, in 1957, post-war authorities put the tree under state protection and let an olive oil producing company take charge.
That all changed in 2003, says Milovic.
The municipal authorities decided in 2003 that Primorka (company) can no longer own the old olive and they handed it over to the Bar cultural centre. It is really a logical outcome, he says.
Couples still come to wed under the old olive tree crown, believing it would bring wealth and happiness. So, it (olive tree) still functions as a trademark of Bar and Montenegro.
Milovic claims the olive tree has helped bring peace among many Montenegro families over the centuries.
The patriarchal Balkan country is known for bloody family feuds that have left their mark on generations of its residents.
There is always some story about the feuding families that would gather somewhere, this has not been the most important site, but it was the most well-known site where people gathered, he says.
So it was normal that they should make up here. So, it worked like this that one family would come and then another, they talk and end the feud.
Proud locals recently sought scientific backing to their claims.
Cazim Alkovic, Head of Olive Breeders says in 2015 samples were sent to Istanbul University for analysis. They estimated the tree's main stem to be around 2,240 years old at the time.
A nearby plaque says Stara Maslina is believed to be the oldest olive tree in Europe.
We got the results and it was confirmed that this olive is the oldest in our area, that it is the oldest among those that were tested and that, according to those estimates, it is today 2,244 years old, he says.
But what about its precious fruit?
Alkovic says they've made an olive oil using fruits picked solely from Stara Maslina.
He says Britain's Prince Charles was gifted a bottle of the precious olive oil during a trip to Montenegro in 2016.
We produced olive oil solely from this olive tree, from a tree that is significantly older than Christ, 2,244 years (old), and we produced oil, we got food, says Alkovic.
Can you imagine what it means to have food from a plant that is more than two millennia old?

Places of interest
The Old Olive of Mirovica is said to be one of the oldest olive trees in Europe and one of the oldest trees in the world.[citation needed] In 1957, it was placed under state protection. Numerous legends and traditions are associated with the tree. For instance, families that had a dispute would come to the tree to make peace. This explains its name, Mirovica, mir meaning peace.
King Nikola’s palace was built in 1885. It was a present from King Nikola to his daughter Princess Zorka and his son-in-law, Prince Petar Karađorđević. The construction included a large palace, a little palace, a chapel, guardhouses and a winter garden. In 1910, a spacious ballroom was added. A botanic garden has Mediterranean vegetation including a cork tree. There is also a large flower garden in a stainless steel structure of interesting shape. it was a gift from King Emmanuel of Italy to King Nikola. It is now a restaurant called Knjaževa bašta (The Duke’s Garden). At the front of the palace, there was a wooden pier. Between 1866 and 1916, King Nikola owned ten yachts. One of them, Sibil, was bought from Jules Verne, the novelist. The last yacht bought was the Rumija. In 1915, it was sunk in the Bar harbour by the Austro-Hungarian navy. The palace complex houses the Bar city museum. It is also used as a venue for festivals, concerts, exhibitions and literary events.
Mount Rumija Fortress
Nehaj Fortress, partially preserved, is located near the small seaside town of Sutomore. It has been held by both Venetians and Ottoman Turks. It was first recorded as the 16th century Fortezza dei Spizi, a Venetian fortified town.
Bar old town.
The Bar Aqueduct was constructed during the 16th and 17th centuries.
Beaches :
The Bar municipality has over 44 kilometres (27 miles) of sea coast. There are twenty beaches stretching over 9 kilometres (6 miles). In the north is Čanj, which has a 1,100-metre (3,600-foot) sandy beach. A boat takes tourists from Čanj to the Kraljičina Plaža. It lies below a natural wall of sedimentary rock. Further south is 300-metre-long (980-foot) Maljevik Beach. The beach at Sutomore, 1,200 metres (3,900 feet) long, has entertainments, activities and restaurants. Near the medieval monastery complex of Ratac is Crvena Plaža, named after the colour of its fine sand. The beach is surrounded by a pine forest and located about a hundred m from the main road to Bar. Just north of the Bar central business district is the 1,200-metre-long (3,900-foot)Žukotrlica Beach. It is a gravel beach, surrounded by a pine forest and varied Mediterranean vegetation. The Bar Gradska Plaža is located in front of King Nikola's palace. It is 750 metres (2,460 feet) long, part pebble and part sand. 10 kilometres (6 miles) south of central Bar is the 380-metre-long (1,250-foot) Veliki Pijesak. It is surrounded by numerous tourist facilities, restaurants and discothèques. On the border of the Bar and Ulcinj municipalities, in the village of Bušat, is the Val Maslina with its nearby olive groves. There are also beaches on the shore of Lake Skadar including the sandy Murici village beach and Pjesacac.
Bar has a ferry line to Bari, Italy which is operated by Montenegro Lines. In season, ferries also go to Ancona, Italy. Bar is well connected with inland Montenegro, as well as with the rest of the Montenegrin coast. The Sozina tunnel, completed in 2006, shortened the road connection with Podgorica to around 50 km (31 mi). Bar is connected to other coastal towns by the Adriatic motorway, which extends from Ulcinj to Herceg Novi, and on to Croatia. Bar is also the final station of the Belgrade - Bar railway, which connects Bar with Podgorica, northern Montenegro and Serbia. Podgorica Airport is about 40 km (25 mi) from Bar. There are regular flights to Belgrade, Budapest, Zürich, Frankfurt, Ljubljana, Paris, Rome and Vienna.

In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Montenegro.
More information about the video content bellow:
1. Montenegro was granted independence on June 3rd 2006, when a numerically easy-on-the-eye 55.5% voted to break away from Serbia. Before that, Montenegro was part of a state union, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, better known as Serbia & Montenegro.
2. Montenegro is Europe's most biologically diverse country. Being situated on the Balkan peninsula and the Adriatic sea means that the country is brimming with wildlife and can boast a number of species per area unit index of 0.837, beating out all European countries. The two main bio-geographical regions are- Mediterranean and Alpine-, with a very wide range of ecosystems and habitat types for a country of its size.
3. The Ostrog monastery is one of the biggest sanctuaries in the world. It is visited by people of all religions. The Ostrog monastery is one of the most visited shrines in the Christian world. The amazing structure was carved in rocks on the side of a mountain in the 17th century.
4. The oldest tree in Europe lives in Bar: The Old Olive Tree is over 2,000 years old, and more than 100,000 olive trees in municipality of Bar are more than 1,000 years old. Its volume is about 10m. The tree is a traditional trademark for the area and is said to have many legends attached to it: one of them being that at one time families would visit the tree to make peace during a dispute.
5. Tara Canyon is the deepest canyon in Europe and second deepest after the Grand Canyon is the USA. The canyon is 82 kilometres long and at its deepest it is 1300m. It is protected as part of Durmitor National Park and is said to be a future UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of the best ways to see the canyon is to do a river rafting trip. The 11 mile trip takes two-three hours, and passes through 21 rapid sections. The adrenaline fuelled trip is said to be one of the best due to its drop in elevation in such a short distance.
6. Montenegro is steeped in history… Both the Kotor region and the Durmitor National Park are protected by the UNESCO World Heritage list. While Kotor’s St Tripun cathedral is more than 50 years older than Paris’s Notre Dame Cathedral. History heads should also spend time exploring Budva, one of the oldest urban centers on the Adriatic coast, it clocks over 2, 500 years. Meanwhile, 50 miles south, the equally ancient Ulcinj is one of the most authentic old towns in Montenegro and was believed to inspire famous Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes to write Don Quijote thanks to an experience he had while imprisoned there!
7. Montenegro has no currency of its own. From 1996 the Deutsche Mark was the de facto currency in all private and banking transactions and it was formally adopted as Montenegro's currency in November 1999. The mark was replaced by the euro in 2002 without any objections from the European Central Bank.
