Farewell Parliament House - Sunday May 8, 1988
This was shown on ABC TV at 7:30 pm on the evening before New Parliament House opened in Canberra. Sir James Killen wanders through Old Parliament House, as we all can now. He speaks to Gough Whitlam, John Gorton, Fred Daly and others.
Not really News as such, but it certainly fits in here. Enjoy.
Old Parliament House in Canberra ACT
The Opening Of Canberra, Australia's Capital City
This is the official film made on the day of the opening of the Federal Parliament House in Canberra to record and preserve that significant ceremony. The formal opening by the Duke and Duchess of York in 1927, was one of the Cinema Branch's Know Your Own Country series. It is one of many films in The Film Australia Collection that have captured unique, historical events that form part of Australia's visual memory. Filming those parts of the ceremony that took place in the Senate chamber proved to be a challenging exercise. The lights could be turned on only for two minutes at a time. Cinema Branch cinematographer, Bert Ive, and his assistant Reg Pearse had to work quickly to try and capture these important moments. Fortunately many of the events took place outdoors. Made by The Cinema and Photographic Branch 1927.
Although originally a silent film with inter-title cards the NFSA recently commissioned a musical accompaniment, devised and performed by Elaine Loebenstein, to be added to this film as part of the Canberra 100 celebrations.
As The Film Australia Collection marks its 100th year there are many NFSA online resource available; films, photos and blogs.

Take a tour of Canberra Parliament House in Australia -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
One of Australia's greatest architectural undertakings, in size and expense, is located in Canberra.
It is the new Parliament House, visible from the lake behind the old parliament building.
This massive complex is largely modeled on its predecessor, therefore, the similarities are obvious.
The most striking part of the Parliament House is the enormous flagpole crowning it.
The building is very large, and much of it is built into the hill.
The location of the Senate and the House of Representatives, it is a building of national importance.
