ITALY: EXPLORING GENOA (GENOVA), top attractions ???? and PLACES TO AVOID
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go lose ourselves in the mediaeval streets and traditional old workshops of the historic city of Genoa (Genova) in Italy.
One of the largest in Europe, Genoa's historic centre unwinds in an intricate maze of alleyways (caruggi) that open unexpectedly onto small squares; the soul of the city lives here in these alleyways, where smells, tastes, and cultures have combined throughout history.
In these narrow spaces, tucked away between the hills and the sea, the pride of wealthy Genoese merchants, indomitable leaders of the Republic, had beautiful mansions built, in which works of art have been collected and preserved for centuries and are visible to this day in several house-museums.
In this dense urban landscape, where the windows are so close they almost touch, architectural styles are layered over one another, with a medieval wall serving as the base of a 14th-century building and Gothic loggias becoming trendy bars: this is a place where the past forms the foundations of the present.
In the centre, where time seems to have stood still, noble palaces and splendid churches alternate with historic shops that have been in operation for over 100 years, where local specialities are still prepared according to ancient recipes and handmade objects are crafted with timeless skill.
Italy, a European country with a long Mediterranean coastline, has left a powerful mark on Western culture and cuisine. Its capital, Rome, is home to the Vatican as well as landmark art and ancient ruins. Other major cities include Florence, with Renaissance masterpieces such as Michelangelo’s David and Brunelleschi's Duomo; Venice, the city of canals; and Milan, Italy’s fashion capital.

Genova Harbour, Genova, Italy
The old harbour (Porto Antico) is the ancient part of the port of Genoa.
The Genoese architect Renzo Piano redeveloped the area for public access, restoring the historical buildings (like the Cotton warehouses) and creating new landmarks like the Aquarium, the Bigo and recently the Bolla (the Sphere).
The main touristic attractions of this area are the famous Aquarium and the Museum of the Sea (MuMA). In 2007 these attractions had almost 1.7 million visitors.

► What to Do in Genoa, Italy:
The Port of Genoa (EN) - Liguria - Italia.it
Genoa is one big piazza on the Mediterranean Sea, and it shows the tangible signs of a history of merchants, explorers, conquerors. Not only, but Genoa's modern side boasts a futuristic port as envisioned in part by architect Renzo Piano.
The port's old section dates back to the 11th Century, when a group of tradesmen founded the Medieval Comune. Then, at the Museo del Mare or Maritime Museum, visitors can discover the links between the city's ancient and contemporary soul, while at the Aquarium - the largest in Italy, no less - one can explore the wonders of the sea from around the world.

Places to see in ( Genoa - Italy )
Genoa (Genova) is a port city and capital of the Liguria region in northwest Italy. It's known for its central role in maritime trade over many centuries. In the old town stands the Romanesque Cathedral of San Lorenzo, with its black-and-white-striped facade and frescoed interior. Narrow lanes open onto monumental squares like Piazza de Ferrari, site of an iconic bronze fountain and the Teatro Carlo Felice opera house.
Genoa (Genova) is a historical port city in northern Italy, the capital of the Region of Liguria. Genoa today, as a tourist attraction, is often shadowed by cities such as Rome or Venice, even though it has a long history as a rich and powerful trade centre. However, with its multitude of hidden gems behind cozy alleyways, excellent cuisine (notably fish and seafood), renovated old port, beautiful sights (including one of Europe's biggest aquariums), and its position as the European Capital of Culture in 2004 have made the birthplace of explorer Christopher Columbus an enticing place which is gradually becoming more included in the touristic market. With pastel-coloured terracotta-roofed houses, artistic churches, lovely seaside villas, and also several luxurious boutiques, Genoa is a must see if you want to experience the quintessential Italy.
Genoa is known to have Europe’s biggest historical center. This is the heart of the old city. It’s made up of an incredible amount of tiny streets and alleys called Caruggi. Walking through it will plump you right back in ancient times when Genoa was the most important harbor of the Mediterranean sea. The city is generally safe, but caution is to be applied, especially at night time and in the more quiet zones toward Piazza Principe and the old harbor, due to presence of small criminality.
The natal house of Cristoforo Colombo. In piazza Dante you will find what is said to be the natal house of Columbus;
The impressive fortification belt built on the hills surrounding the city, originating in the 16th Century
There is a funicular railway servicing Monte Righi, where one can have pleasant walks on the surrounding hills and to the fortifications (see above), or just admire the spectacular view of the city and the Mediterranean Sea.
Spianata Castelletto is a nice belvedere where one can have a pleasant view of the city and of the seaport. It can be reached by public lift from Piazza della Nunziata or on foot from that very same square.
Via Garibaldi (also known as Via Aurea and Strada Nuova, Golden Street and New Street) with very impressive baroque buildings. Some similar buildings are also found in Via Balbi.
The Old Harbour (Porto Antico), next to the Aquarium, is an entertainment area with museums, cinemas, cafés and also a beautiful promenade along the sea.
The Lanterna - the oldest European lighthouse and a prominent Genovese symbol
A lot of beautiful churches, some of which date back to the Romanesque time (San Giovanni di Pre', San Donato, Santa Maria del Castello)
Corso Italia - Genoa's promenade
Boccadasse - a picturesque fishermen quarter
Castello d'Albertis
Palazzo Ducale Where the Dukes of Genoa used to live.
Il Galeone Neptune -- a fanciful recreation of a pirate ship.

Port of Genoa Italy at Night
Port of Genoa, Italy, at night, from Holiday Inn 7th floor.
Port of Genoa, Genoa, Liguria, Italy, Europe
The Port of Genoa is a major Italian seaport on the Mediterranean Sea. With a trade volume of 51.6 million tonnes, it is the busiest port of Italy by cargo tonnage and the second busiest in terms of twenty-foot equivalent units after the transshipment port of Gioia Tauro, with a trade volume of 2.1 million TEUs handled in 2012. The port is also used as a dismantling station and has been named as the port where the Costa Concordia is to be dismantled. The Port of Genoa covers an area of about 700 hectares of land and 500 hectares on water, stretching for over 22 kilometres along the coastline, with 47 km of maritime ways and 30 km of operative quays. The quays of the passenger terminals extend over an area of 250 thousand square metres, with 5 equipped berths for cruise vessels and 13 for ferries, for an annual capacity of 4 million ferry passengers, 1.5 million cars and 250,000 trucks. The historical maritime station of Ponte dei Mille is today a technologically advanced cruise terminal, with facilities designed after the world's most modern airports, in order to ensure fast embarking and disembarking of latest generation ships carrying thousand passengers. A third cruise terminal is currently under construction in the redesigned area of Ponte Parodi, once a quay used for grain traffic. There are two major lighthouses: the historical Lanterna, 76 metres tall (249 feet), and the small lighthouse of Punta Vagno, at the eastern entrance of the port.
