Portland is a city in the U.S. state of Maine and serves as the seat of Cumberland County. Portland's population was 67,067 as of 2017. The Greater Portland metropolitan area is home to over half a million people, more than one-third of Maine's total population, making it the most populous metro in northern New England (an area comprising the states of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont). Portland is Maine's , with an economy that relies on the service sector and tourism. The Old Port district is known for its 19th century architecture and nightlife. Marine industry still plays an important role in the city's economy, with an active waterfront that supports fishing and commercial shipping. The Port of Portland is the largest tonnage seaport in New England.

The city seal depicts a phoenix rising from ashes, which is a reference to the recoveries from four devastating fires. Portland was named after the English Isle of Portland, Dorset. In turn, the city of Portland, Oregon was named after Portland, Maine. Portland itself comes from the Old English word Portlanda, which literally means land surrounding a harbor.

Old Port on a Tuesday Night

While rambling around in Portland maine's Old Port district on recent evening I got a tad hungry, and found myself looking for a place to find some good food, good beer, and good company. I found just such a place tucked down amongst the oyster bars on Commercial Street, and wrote a poem about this great little pub.

Old Port on a Tuesday Night

I went down to Portland Maine
Just the other night
To grab me a bite, one just simple and plain
And to hear a local tune, and maybe see a sight

I wandered a spell amongst the past and new
I gazed and wondered at modern glass and ancient brick
As the sky grew dark, fading into black from blue
With the fog rolling in, the air getting' thick

There were all kinds of places of which to dine
It was hard to choose, seemed a dozen per block
But I wanted a place that wasn't too fancy, just fine
There were oyster bars, dining under the stars, or upon the walk

But I finally found me a place
Between the wharf and street
A place to dine in a casual grace
And found their food just can't be beat

So if you find yourself a-wanderin
Down around Maine's Old Port
And your stomach starts complainin'
You'll want a meal of a decent sort

Just steer your steps to Commercial street
Amongst the wharf and pier
And you'll find a place that can't be beat
For the finest food and beer

Tucked inside of number ninety-four
Is a place that you can grab some grub
And rest your feet while on your tour
A place called Andy's Old Port Pub

That's the poem, hope you like it and the video of part Old Port at night. I only had a small camera with me as catching some video was not in my game plan. And by the way, this isn't a paid advertisement. I rarely do endorsements, and when I do I have to really like what I am endorsing, and this place truly is worth the visit if you are just looking for some great food and drink.
