A black-and-white travelogue from the Port O’ Call Series produced by William M. Pizor, “Isle of Isolation: Bali” takes the viewer to the 1930s-era Indonesian island. No larger than Delaware with a population of “a million happy people,” the narrator explains how Bali is a world apart from other cultures. The film shows the viewer a variety of scenes from the island (mentioning at mark 01:25 that it is primarily “a land of women” outnumbering the men by 70 percent), including a Balinese village (mark 02:10) arranged in compounds. There’s also a visit to a Balinese market where topless women (as is the practice in Bali, we are told) act as vendors for a variety of goods. Men “do as little as possible” we’re told at mark 04:25, other than bearing the responsibility for cultivating rice fields and participating in cock fighting, as the camera pans a row of roosters in their coops followed by a scene from one fight. We learn of Balinese cremation and funeral rituals starting at mark 05:39 and watch as a young boy performs a ritualistic dance (mark 06:30), followed by scenes of other Balinese dances.

Crete | The Old Port of Rethymno. Like all Cretan coastal towns, the port of Rethymno lies in the shadow of a Venetian-era castle.
The castle, called the Fortezza, divides the port into two sections. The eastern section is the larger, and has the most cafes and fish tavernas.
The Old Port of Rethymno. Small passenger ships and freighters put in on the less-used west side, while the yachts and fishing boats crowd the longer eastern stretch, adding a pleasant backdrop to your beer-sipping or bathing.

My wife and I stayed at the Alcanea for a week in early April 2013 and enjoyed every minute of our stay. The Hotel is situated in the North-West corner of the old harbour and has stacks of character and charm. The staff are extremely welcoming and helpful, taking time to sit down with you and suggest places to visit, things to do or places to eat. Their advice was flawless, taking us to the best sights, beaches and lagoons in the area (and there are plently of them). We had a rental car, so we travelled around a little, which we'd recommend if you are staying in Chania more than 3 or 4 days, though we loved the place and really enjoyed walking the old streets and eating out in many of the great restraunts, we also wanted to see a little more of the beautiful island.
The rooms at the Alcanea have lots of character too, with original features and a modern high quality bathroom. The entance area, upstairs coffee room/lounge, hall ways, quiet courtyard out back and seating area just out front, where we took breakfast each morning (with a superb view of the harbour) were perfect. And the breakfast fantastic (see picture); great selection, great quality, all delivered with a cheerful smile and greeting.
In summary, a really excellent hotel worthy of it's reviews and ranking on Trip Advisor.

Wonderful place to stay in Chania. Close to the harbour and the old town. Owners and all the staff made us feel welcome and were keen to ensure our stay was perfect. The hotel has been tastefully and beautifully restored. Room was well appointed and spotlessly clean with a fab shower. The only place to stay in Chania!.

We stayed at the Alcanea foe my birthday once again a Christmas present from a dear friend. We stayed in the same room and the welcome could not have been warmer. Fantastic break with excellent breakfast sitting outside in the glorious Sunshine in March. We only live 22kms away but the stay to enjoy the city at night is fabulous. Many small adjustments have been made since our 1st stay which are all improvements.

We were here on our honeymoon in 2012. This hotel is just amazing all around. Their recommendation on restaurants is awesome. The people are really nice. We had a great view from our window on the second floor. The room is as big as hotels in the US, nice shower.

This beautiful boutique hotel has a perfect setting on the harbour at Chania and is a brilliantly converted historical building. Our flight was diverted and we arrived two hours late. The staff at the Alcanea not only rearranged the taxi to collect us but also stayed late to welcome us and offer us food on arrival - at midnight. Our room was lovely and the bed enormous and luxurious. The bathroom was fabulous. Breakfast was delicious and plentiful. The staff were so friendly and incredibly helpful. On our last day, a flash strike by taxi drivers might have left us stranded but for the friend of one of the staff who drove us to the airport as a favour. I will want to go back again and again.
