Freedom & Fresh Air on the Old Rail Trail Greenway - Mullingar to Athlone
Safety, freedom and fresh air family fun on the Old Rail Trail Greenway. The route follows the old railway line for over 40kms all the way to Mullingar and because it’s for bikes and pedestrians only, it couldn’t be safer. Plus there are no hills so it’s easy on little legs too. There are entry and exit points every few kilometres so there are plenty of places to stop and explore along the way.

Walking and cycling route from Dublin to Galway planned
Walking and cycling route from Dublin to Galway planned
A walking and cycling route stretching from Dublin to Galway is hoped to form the centrepiece of the Government’s National Greenway Strategy. Minister for Transport Shane Ross announced the strategy at the Old Rail Trail in Moate, Co Westmeath, on Friday afternoon. He praised Minister of State at the Department of Transport Brendan Griffin for promoting greenways. “Without him we wouldn’t have €53 million for the next three years, by the end of 2021, to be spent on greenways in this country when...

A walk along the old railway tracks on the old rail trail in Moate in County Westmeath. This track forms part of the disused railway between Athlone and Mullingar which used to be part of the Dublin-Galway railway line before all trains were diverted via Portarlington to Heuston Station. Moate Railway Station closed in 1987. The Old Rail Trail greenway opened next to the tracks in 2015.

The Old Rail Trail on a Recumbent
In this video, I cycled the Old Rail Trail on my recumbent bicycle, which is of the long wheelbase type with underseat steering.
The Old Rail Trail is a greenway shared by cyclists and walkers approx. 40km long, running along a disused railway line between Athlone and Mullingar.
The entire footage in this video is recorded using a GoPro Hero Session, with the exception of a few seconds of footage of panning around Moate Railway Station where I used an iPhone.
In most of the footage, I had the GoPro mounted at the front, near the steering column. In this position, the GoPro was only 60cm off the ground, compared to approx 100cm off the ground when mounted on the handlebars of an ordinary bike. This would probably explain why in much of the video, I appeared to be going quite fast, when in fact, I was doing what I would consider being moderate speed, about 25 - 30km/h.
Other footage involves the GoPro mounted on a head strap, as well as it mounted on a handle grip.

Cycling 49km in the Rain! The Athlone-Mullingar Greenway
Sorry about the quality, there is rain on the lens most of the time, but I thought it was worth a share because, you know, sometimes you just gotta cycle 49km in the rain! With friends by your side and a smile on your face, because that is what experimenting with adventure is all about of course :-)
