Northwest Coast Art: A Community of Tradition, Exhibition Tour
Curator Gerald F. Schroedl, Professor Emeritus, UT Department of Anthropology, gives a tour of his exhibition, Northwest Coast Art: A Community of Tradition, Exhibition Tour (September 8, 2017–March 4, 2018), at the McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture at the University of Tennessee.
The exhibition explores the art of Northwest Coast peoples including the Coast Salish, Haida, Kwakwa̱ka̱’wakw, Makah, Nuu-chah-nulth, and Tlingit. From model totem poles and bentwood boxes, to spoons, prints, and silver bracelets, these objects were created for different purposes––utilitarian, decorative, and ceremonial. What all of them share in common is the desire to preserve and perpetuate Northwest Coast cultural heritage and community.

JUICY HOME Robert Bateman, Salt Spring Island, BC
Robert Bateman, OC, OBC (born 24 May 1930) is a Canadian naturalist and painter, born in Toronto, Ontario.
Bateman was always interested in art, but he never intended on making a living from it. He was fascinated by the natural world in his childhood; he recorded the sightings of all of the birds in the area of his house in Toronto.[2] He found inspiration from the Group of Seven; he was also interested in making abstract paintings of nature.[3] It wasn't until the mid 1960's that he changed to his present style, realism.[2] In 1954, he graduated with a degree in geography from Victoria College in the University of Toronto. Afterwards, he attended Ontario College of Education. Although the stage was set for an expert wildlife artist, Bateman moved on to be a high school art/geography teacher.[1] However, he still painted in his free time. It wasn't until the 1970s and 1980s that his work started to receive major recognition. Robert Bateman's show in 1987, at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, drew a large crowd for a living artist.[citation needed]
Bateman also has approximately six books devoted solely to his paintings.[1] Bateman's decision in 1977 to produce reproductions of his paintings through Mill Pond Press has been criticized by some who feel that the reproductions are overpriced posters that cheapen the legitimate art market.[2] The reproductions are popular items, being sold in print galleries across Canada and more internationally.
Today, Robert Bateman lives in Saltspring Island in British Columbia with his second wife [4] Birgit Freybe Bateman.[2] Robert Bateman Secondary School in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Robert Bateman High School in Burlington, Ontario, and Robert Bateman Elementary School, Ottawa, Ontario are named after him.
In 2000, Bateman began the Get to Know program in British Columbia to educate young people about nature and to inspire youth to connect to the natural world.[5][6]
In 2005 Bateman volunteered for an assessment of chemicals present in his body that had a proven negative health effect. The assessment was sponsored by the organization Environmental Defence.[7]
In 2007, Robert Bateman and Birgit Freybe Bateman gifted Royal Roads University[1] with original art, giclées, photographs, sketch books and artifacts -- valued at over $11 million. Royal Roads is currently fundraising to build the Robert Bateman Centre. The Robert Bateman Centre aims to be an education centre with a range of accessible and relevant programming. The Centre will be situated in Hatley Park National Historic Site and will showcase green building technology.

Vancouver, British Columbia - VanDusen Botanical Garden - Flowers HD (2014)
VanDusen Botanical Garden is situated in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Named for local lumberman and philanthropist Whitford Julian VanDusen, it has been a public garden since its opening on August 30, 1975. The garden is managed by the Vancouver Park Board and run by an administrative staff bolstered by approximately 1600 volunteers and 9 full-time gardeners with seasonal interns.
VanDusen Botanical Garden is located in the Shaughnessy neighbourhood of Vancouver at the North West corner of 37th and Oak Street. The garden is open to the public every day of the year except Christmas. There are admission fees. The Garden covers 22 hectares (55 acres) and displays plants gathered from all over the world.
In 1970 the Vancouver Foundation, the provincial government, and the city of Vancouver signed an agreement to develop a public garden on part of the old Shaughnessy Golf Course. An early decision not to partake in scientific research enabled the channelling of funds and energy into garden construction and released the staff from the responsibility of building research collections or a herbarium. However, there is a specialized reference library in the new building (a LEED platinum standard living building which opened in November 2011).
The building features a gift/garden shop, a book and seed library, a restaurant and a coffee shop.
Special features in the garden include carved totem poles, large stone sculptures, and a Korean Pavilion at the edge of the Asian plant collection. Children, in particular, enjoy the maze situated adjacent to the heirloom vegetable garden.
Horticulturally, visitors find a large collection of species and hybrid Rhododendron, cultivars of Fagus sylvatica, as well as collections of Sorbus, Fraxinus and Magnolia.
Specialized niche plantings include a Heather garden, a black garden, a seasonal Laburnum Walk, a majestic stand of sequoiadendron giganteum, a cypress pond, a formal perennial garden, a heritage vegetable garden (seasonal), a fragrance garden (seasonal) and a large sino-Himalayan garden.
VanDusen Botanical Garden is enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds. Visitors can merely enjoy the display or strive for a deeper understanding of plants and their growing conditions. Many of the plant collections are labelled and arranged to demonstrate botanical relationships or geographical origins. Free guided walking tours and cart tours are offered daily through the spring, summer and fall.
Educational opportunities include a series of lectures, and workshops, as well as school programs.
Some of the volunteer opportunities include guiding, seed collecting, dried flower arranging, information desk and plant labeling.
The garden is a popular site for local weddings. Site rentals are arranged through the administrative offices. The garden also plays host to the yearly VanDusen Garden Plant Sale and the winter Festival of Lights.
R. Roy Forster was recognized with the Order of Canada on April 14, 1999, for his work in creating the gardens.

EXPO – Magic of the White City (Narrated by Gene Wilder)
Narrated by Gene Wilder, EXPO – Magic of the White City brings the Chicago World’s Fair to life. Experience the world of 1893 through a cinematic visit to Chicago’s Columbian Exposition.
Subscribe for more great documentaries!
Nearly 28 million people visited the Fair. Dubbed the “White City,” it inspired future innovators like Henry Ford and Frank Lloyd Wright, unveiled the Ferris Wheel and Cracker Jack®, and, in many ways, marked the beginning of the 20th century. Many of the era’s greatest achievements in science, technology and culture were unveiled there. The grounds were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, famous for his design of New York City’s Central Park, and constructed under the supervision of Daniel Burnham.
The Fair was an engineering marvel. On opening day, President Grover Cleveland depressed a golden telegraph key which sent the first courses of electricity throughout the Fair powering fountains, machines, electric railways and thousands of lights. It was the first use of electricity on such a massive scale.
In addition, fairgoers enjoyed the Midway Plaisance where a one-mile boulevard of fun offered camel riding and guilty pleasures such as belly dancing, street fighting and beer drinking. Against the backdrop of 1893’s troubles with workers’ rights, prejudice, discrimination and corruption, the World’s Columbian Exposition cast a brief ray of hope for the future of humanity.
Filmed in spectacular High-Definition, EXPO – Magic of the White City immerses viewers in one of the world’s biggest extravaganzas and one of the most unforgettable events in American history. There will never be another event like it… or will there?
Emily Carr 艾蜜莉卡
Born in Victoria on December 13, 1871. Died in Victoria on March 2, 1945.
Emily Carr has been called “the most important BC artist of her generation” by the Vancouver Art Gallery. Known for paintings that express a spiritual connection to the BC landscape and document First Nations settlements, Carr remains influential to many of today’s Canadian artists. Beginning in her late teens, Carr studied at the San Francisco Art Institute and the Westminster School of Art; it is said that her exposure to Post-Impressionism and Fauvism while studying in Paris encouraged her to use a more vibrant palette and forge a new artistic style. Upon her return to Canada in 1912, she made trips to aboriginal villages around Vancouver Island. Unfortunately, sales of her paintings from that era were few, and Carr decided to run a Victoria boarding house for several years rather than paint. In 1927, some of her works were included in a major exhibition of West Coast art at the National Gallery of Canada, winning her fans in the Group of Seven and spurring her to create again. Carr also excelled at writing, and her memoir Klee Wyck earned the Governor General’s Award for English-language non-fiction in 1941. Her work continues to be highlighted nationally and internationally; a VAG survey toured the nation in the late 2000s, and her works were included at Documenta 13 in 2012.
