Guiob Old Church Ruins in Catarman, Camiguin, Philippines
The Old Church Ruins in Camiguin, also known as Old Spanish Church Ruins, have become an iconic landmark on the island which has stood the test of time following the volcanic eruptions of Mt. Vulcan and Mt. Hibok-hibok. It is located at Barangay Bonbon, Catarman, Camiguin. It was built on top of a cliffy coast overlooking the sea. The walls and columns of the church are made up of coralline limestone. A centennial tree stands beside the ruins and a modern lighthouse is erected outside adjacent the ruins on the seaside.
We are an Overseas Filipino Worker Family (OFW) living in Canada. It is our first time to come home to the Philippines after leaving the country six years ago. We are touring the beautiful places in the Visayas and Mindanao areas together with our families. This is part of the documentary of our travels. Philippines Tourist Attraction
Camiguin Island Old Church Ruins 2019
One of the popular things to do in Camiguin is to visit the Old Church Ruins at Catarman.
The church was originally built by the Spanish in the 16th century.
The roof and everything inside was destroyed on May 13 1871 from an earthquake from the nearby erupting Mount Vulcan.
Still standing to this day are the sturdy walls of this amazing structure.
It doesn't take much time to look over this historic site, and it is well worth stopping for a look. The entry fee is only 10 PHP.
If you're visiting Camiguin Island be sure to check out the Camiguin Island Old Church Ruins.

Old Church Ruins and Sunken Cemetery, Camiguin | Philippines
Old Church Ruins is an old Spanish church. The traumatic volcanic eruption in 1871 wiped out the whole place.
What is left of the church are the mudbrick walls.
The church is located in Barangay Bonbon, Catarman.
Before there was a chapel inside the ruins but it was removed. They just put a small altat and you can light a candle there to pay a respect. Outside the ruins a beautiful scenery will greet you.
The church has a very nice view because it's beside the beach. The air is so refershing and the place is very peaceful maybe because it was lean season and we went there around 4:30 in the afternoon.
After the Old Church Ruins tour we went to one of the best tourist destination the Sunken Cemetery. In the video you can only see a huge cross. The actual cemetery is under the water.
The cemetery was also affected by the volcanic eruption. The place is located at Barrio Bonbon, Catarman also. The Sunken Cemetery is 20-30 meters away from the shoreline.
Visiting the plac is free but if you want to get closer to the cross the boat man can take you there for Php 20. Not bad for an amazing experience.
How to get there:
The old church ruins and Sunken Cemetery are in the same area and just beside the highway. You can ask the locals how to get there. And it is better to rent a motorbike if you are travelling alone or a couple but if you are travelling by group you can rent a multicab.

Sights and Sounds of Camiguin Island
Known as the Island Born of Fire, Camiguin is located in the Bohol Sea, off the coast of Misamis Oriental Province.
Misamis Oriental and Camiguin has a shared history. During the Spanish era, Cagayan de Misamis (old name of Cagayan de Oro) was the capital of the entire Misamis region which included Camiguin Island. It was only in 1968 that Camiguin became a separate province from Misamis Oriental.

ONE OF THE OLDEST CHURCH IN THE PHILIPPINES
Built in 1820, the Sto. Domingo Church has two dome-shaped belfries, framing the main structure, which is the reason why it’s sometimes referred to as the Twin Belfry Church. It is built from solid squared stone walls unsupported by pillars, held together by a mixture of lime, “tangguli” (molasses) and egg albumin. This is the same binder used in other old churches like the Baclayon Church in Bohol.
The Sto. Domingo Church is complemented by the adjacent Municipal Building (another Spanish era structure), the Plaza Pugad Lawin, and the mausoleum of Potenciano Gregorio, Sr., compositor of “Sarung Banggi”.
It’s one of the most scary churches I’ve been into. The massive structure and the “interesting” nooks and crannies made my spine tingle. It’s a very old church reportedly built using forced labor, with many laborers dying during the construction process. I didn’t know that back then, when I decided to go up the belfry, but that didn’t make the experience less heart-thumping.

Camiguin
Camiguin
Bohol, Mindanao
Camiguin is an island province of the Philippines located in the Bohol Sea, about 10 km (6.2 mi) off the northern coast of Misamis Oriental in Mindanao. It is the second-smallest province both in population and land area after Batanes. The capital of the province is Mambajao, and it is a part of the Northern Mindanao Region of the Philippines.
The name Camiguin is derived from the native word Kamagong, a species of the ebony tree that thrives near Lake Mainit in the Province of Surigao del Norte. Earlier inhabitants of the islands are Manobos from the Surigao region. An earlier Spanish geography book writes the island as Camiguing. There is reason to suppose the Spaniards dropped the final g.
Lanzones Festival
Each year in October, a festival is held celebrating the Lanzones, a small grape-sized tropical fruit grown all over the island. The week-long Lanzones Festival is one of the more colorful events in the Philippines.
Churches
Several centuries-old Spanish Colonial and 20th century churches are found in various parts of the island.
Camiguin is of volcanic origin and composed of four young stratovolcanoes overlying older volcanic structures. The last eruption was from Hibok-Hibok in 1953, and it is still considered as active. The other major volcanic edifices are Mt. Vulcan 671 meters (2,201 ft), northwest of Hibok-Hibok; Mt. Mambajao 1,552 meters (5,092 ft) in central Camiguin; Mt. Guinsiliban 581 meters (1,906 ft), southernmost Camiguin; and Mt. Butay north of Mount Guinsiliban. The other domes and cones are Campana Hill, Minokol Hill, Tres Marias Hill, Mt. Carling, Mt. Tibane, and Piyakong Hill.
Santo Rosario Church
The famed Santo Rosario Church in the municipality of Sagay was built in 1882.
Old Catarman Church Ruins
The church of the Old Catarman town was destroyed and partly submerged by volcanic debris during the eruption and formation of Mt. Vulcan from 1871 to 1875. Also known as Gui-ob Church, only the ruins of the church and bell tower remains of the old town. An unsightly modern white lighthouse was recently erected close to the bell tower.
Baylao Church
The Church located in Baylao is claimed to be miraculous attributed to saving many lives during the last volcanic eruption of Hibok-hibok.
Old Ancestral Homes
Beautiful and ornate ancestral homes that date back to the Spanish Colonial Period and American Colonial Period, are still abundant and can be found on the streets of Camiguin.
White Island off the northern coast of Camiguin
Beautiful and ornate ancestral homes that date back to the Spanish Colonial Period and American Colonial Period, are still abundant and can be found on the streets of Camiguin.
Located just a few kilometers off the coast are the two beautiful islands of Camiguin.
White Island is accessed from Agoho which is about 5 km west of the town of Mambajao.
Mantigue Island can be reached from Mahinog about 14 km south of Mambajao.
Sunken Cemetery
During the volcanic birth of the Mt. Vulcan that lasted from 1871 to about 1875, some areas in the town of Bonbon subsided, sinking the cemetery of the town to below sea level. The place is commemorated by a huge cross erected in 1982.
Waterfalls
Katibawasan Falls. Located 5 km. (3.1 mi) southeast of Mambajao, the beautiful Katibawasan Falls cascades 250-foot (76 m.) down to a pool surrounded by orchids and ferns. An invigorating dip on the pool is popular especially on warmer days and several hiking trails are within the park. This is also the favorite jump-off point for trekkers and mountaineers in search of adventure on the slopes of Mt. Hibok-Hibok.
Tuasan Falls is located 6 km. (3.7 mi) northeast of Catarman. Getting to the falls entails a very scenic hike passing through the quaint Barrio of Mainit, Catarman and along the rocky river bed. The pool below the waterfalls is deep and clear. The surrounding scenery is unspoiled and perfect for a peaceful picnic, the only sounds around you is that of the tumbling falls and running water.
Springs
Ardent Hot Spring. Located at the foot of Hibok-Hibok Volcano bubbles the mineral pools of Ardent Hot Springs. Wisps of steam can be seen rising from the running waters heated up by the cauldron of the mountain, the most recently active of the seven volcanoes on the island.
Sto. Niño Cold Springs and Bura Natural Soda Water Swimming Pool in Catarman are other popular places to get a relaxing dip on the island.
Ferry to Camiguin with Mount Guinsiliban in the background
Tangub Hot Spring is an interesting hot spring located on the shore close to the Sunken Cemetery. Most of the spring is submerged and can be partly seen during low tide. The spring can also be examined by scuba diving or snorkeling, as visibility is excellent and it is also a recommended spot for observing underwater life.

Philippines White Pages Treat In The Camiguin Island 2013
Barely 240 square kilometers in land area, Camiguin is the second smallest island of the Philippines in both area and population. It is just 23 kilometers at its longest and just a bit more than 14 kilometers at its widest. Within this small area lie seven volcanoes. Lovely little Camiguin is the island “born of fire.”
The island-province of Camiguin is a pear-shaped volcanic island in the northern tip of Mindanao. It is approximately 90 kilometers north of the City of Cagayan de Oro. It is bounded to the north by Bohol Sea, to the west by Macajalar Bay, to the southeast by Gingoog Bay and to the east by Butuan Bay.
CATARMAN CHURCH RUINS (GUI-OB CHURCH)
The devastating volcanic eruption in 1871 wiped out the Spanish settlement of Catarman that was established in 1697. The remains of an Old Spanish church, ruins of adobe walls, belfry and convent are mute witnesses to the wrath of nature. It also allows us a glimpse into the culture of Spanish-era Camiguin.
KATIBAWASAN FALLS
The 250-feet majestic beauty cascades to a rock pool surrounded by ground orchids, wild ferns, trees and boulders. Its ice-cold waters provide an ideal summer splash to locals and tourists alike. Rock picnic tables, seats and cookout facilities are available for use.

ONLY in the Philippines! SUNKEN CEMETERY | Camiguin Island vlog 2018
Camiguin Island in the Philippines is beautiful. After making a travel vlog about the Giant Clams Sanctuary with my friend Aitz, I set my sights on the Sunken Cemetery. As a foreigner in the Philippines, this was amazing travel vlog material.
The sunken cemetery fell into the ocean with the 1871 eruption of Mount Vulcan. It was built by the spanish, and has seen a lot of destruction over the years. More eruptions, typhoons, and tsunamis have turned this beautiful graveyard into rubble, leaving only a few relics under water.
This Philippines travel vlog was recorded after leaving my expat friends Kulas of Becoming Filipino, Daniel Marsh, Finnsnow, Bret Maverick, and the fighterboys in Cagayan de Oro, CDO, and continuing for a mini adventure in Northern Mindanao

The Sunken Cemetery of Camiguin Island...Philippines
Source:
The Sunken Cemetery which is the remains of Mount Vulcan 1871 eruption lies 20 ft underwater in Barrio Bonbon, Catarman, Camiguin, Philippines. History has it that Mount Vulcan or locally known as the Old Volcano had 4 historic eruptions. One was in 1827 but records of this particular eruption were not important. Second was in 1862 which claimed 326 lives when thick ashes flowed and caught people who were fleeing towards the sea. The third one was in 1871 which caused the whole capital of Camiguin along with its cemetery sunk under the sea.
The years after the destructive eruption of Mount Vulcan, the Sunken Cemetery was visible during low tide. But Mount Vulcan erupted again in 1948 until 1953 sinking the whole area deeper. To mark the community cemetery, a large cross was built on the solidified lava in 1982.
Today, the Sunken Cemetery is one of those most visited tourist spots in Camiguin and is one of the most unique diving sites. One can see coral encrusted tombstones when snorkeling and diving in the area.
Sunken Cemetery is just 5 to 10 minutes away from Camiguin Walkway were one can also see the view of the cemetery on top of the old volcano. It's also 10 minutes away from the Old Spanish Church which was also destroyed by the 1871 eruption..
On the month of November, a fluvial procession usually organized by the townsfolk of Barangay Bonbon is held in honor of the sunken graves of their forefathers. They would bring flowers and candles as an offering.
The Sunken Cemetery is meters away from the shore but there are available boats that can take you to the site of the cross if you want a closer look. Alternatively, if you have your swimming gear you can swim through the clear waters up to the site of the cross for 5 minutes.
Visiting Sunken Cemetery is free. But the property owner is not liable for any loss, damage or any untoward incident that will happen while in the area. Just take extra precaution in everything that you do while enjoying your vacation.
Camiguin Island Philippines: The Island Born of Fire
Camiguin Island Philippines: The Island Born of Fire
Known for its clear blue waters and diverse wildlife, the island draws in visitors from all over the world who are looking for an alternative to the more fast-paced vacations islands in the Philippines.
The island province of Camiguin, known as the island born of fire, is a popular tourist destination in the south region of the Philippines.
blog: Thank You, Camiguin! @Traveloka
Camiguin is the perfect place to get away and lose yourself, a more chilled and laid back type of island that still has plenty of activities for those who crave a bit of adventure.
Camiguin is the second smallest Philippine province after Batanes (link Batanes) in the north and is home to a population of roughly around 89,000 people. A large expat community also calls the island home.
Camiguin itself is a volcanic island with 7 dormant volcanos and 15 marine sanctuaries. The fertile soil is ideal for planting and the local Lanzones are renowned and sought after all throughout the Philippines. (Lanzones are a type of tropical tree which fruit tastes like a combination of grapes and grapefruit.)
Mount Hibok-Hibok has been designated as an ASEAN (Association Of South East Asian Nations) Heritage Park and the surrounding area is home to a number of waterfalls and natural springs.
Mantigue Island
A small white sand island about 4 kilometers from Camiguin, Mantigue has a small jungle and picnic areas for guests.
The island is considered a marine sanctuary and also has a number of snorkeling areas for fish and sea turtle watching.
Traffic to and from Mantigue is highly regulated so the island doesn’t get too crowded. (Make sure to arrive early.)
There is a small canteen in the interior of the island that sells snacks and water. You can also bring your own food and have it prepared there for a fee.
Try having a Filipino boodle fight, it’s the best way to enjoy lunch on a beautiful beach.
You can also take the very short but scenic nature hike through the interior of the island.
White Island
A hotspot for locals and tourists, White Island is a large sandbar located 1.4 kilometers north of Mambajao.
The island itself isnt very large so visitors are allotted only a couple of hours to explore.
We arrived early and the island was pretty busy. One look at the place though, and you can see why.
The most northern tip of the island was the least busy, and the best place for relaxing or taking awesome pictures.
Giant Clam Sanctuary
The Giant Clam Sanctuary was one of our favorite spots. It was cool to get to see these gargantuan mollusks up close. For a modest fee of only ₱150 (add ₱50 for entrance and environmental fees), you can get up close to the clams and observe them in some of the breeding tanks.
Our young guides were the best part of the tour, and we were surprised as to how knowledgeable they were.
For example, the kids explained that out of the five known species of giant clam, four are indigenous to the Philippines.
You can also go snorkeling from Cantaan Kabila Beach for an additionalv200 (for snorkel and fins). A guide will lead you to the Clams conservation area where you can see them in their natural habitat.
Guiob Old Spanish Church Ruins
The old church ruins are overlooking a steep cliff into the ocean and are a nice place to take photos or hang out with the family.
Considered a historical sight, the ruins are maintained by the local government and can be found in the town of Catarman.
The Sunken Cemetery
cov2Located in Barrio Bonbon, Catarman, the Sunken Cemetery is probably Camiguin’s most notable landmark and a sort of icon of the island.
The cross, a major tourist spot, was erected in 1982 as a marker for the cemetery that was submerged during the formation of Mt Volcan in 1871-1876 and boasts the best sunset on the island.
Souvenirs
Treasures Camiguin
A local NGO that upcycles sea glass and transforms them into beautiful works of wearable art.
The project started in 2015 to help bring livelihood to the women of the Brgy Bug-Ong and Agoho communities. Treasures Camiguin acts as the retail outlet for the Komunidad sa Baibai Foundation.
For more about Treasures Camiguin check out their Facebook here @seaglasspacificjewelry
The showroom is set up so you can actually see how the glass is sorted and then made into jewelry.
The jewelry prices range from ₱250 – ₱5,000 plus depending on the rarity of glass and if it’s made using silver.
Pasalubong sa Camiguin
The best spot to buy Pasalubong (souvenirs) is at Pasalubong sa Camiguin. You can find all sorts of snacks and trinkets.
Vjandep Back Shop
Located right beside Samuels Hotel And Restaurant in Mambajao. The Vjandep Bakeshop’s flagship store is a perfect place to buy Camiguin’s renowned Pastels.
The pastels can be found almost everywhere on the island, but be warned, supplies are limited as these things seem to always be out of stock.
Catarman Camiguin Beach
The waters are so clear you would think it was a lake. Hear the sounds of the waves as it rushes the shore. I love this place. I can die in this place. don't mind the stones as you may not have the need to step on it since the waters are deep just a few feet from shore.
