LCV Cities Tour - Frankfort: History of the Old State Capitol
We talk to Education Programs Administrator Leslie McWhorter with the Kentucky Historical Society about the architecture and the history of Old State Capitol.
This is the third state Capitol building. Fire destroyed the first two buildings.
Visit:
Illinois' old state capitol
The Old State Capitol is a reconstruction of Illinois’ fifth statehouse, serving as a seat of state government from 1839-1876. Lincoln delivered his famous “House Divided” speech here, debated his chief rival Stephen Douglas and waged his 1860 presidential campaign within these walls. It’s also where the assassinated leader lay in state in 1865 before being moved to Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield. Visitors are welcome seven days a week. Admission is free, but donations are accepted. (Lori Rackl and Randi Stevenson / Chicago Tribune)

Then Help and sing out loud
Hi there I’m Missouri
Jefferson City’s really cool
But up here in Montana

Midway in Nebraska
You should stop at Lincoln City
In Nevada

New Hampshire welcomes you
Visit Concord any time
If you stop by New Jersey

I am New Mexico
My capitols Santa Fe
New York’s the Empire state
Albany’s where you could stay
Here in North Carolina
You could see Raleigh any time
My name is North Dakota
Bismarck is so fine
Ohio is my name
and Columbus is all mine
I am Oklahoma
Oklahoma City you unwind
We’re the United States of America
We’re 50 strong and proud
If you want to learn about us
Then Help and sing out loud
In the great state of Oregon
In Salem, you can trust
Pennsylvania is my name
and Harrisburg is a must
When you're in Rhode Island
Providence is where you should go
I am South Carolina
Columbia is what I know
Up here in South Dakota

Wisconsin is the cheese
And Madison’s really nice
Wyoming has Cheyenne
Let's sing this chorus twice
We’re the United States of America
We’re 50 strong and proud
If you want to learn about us
Then Help and sing out loud
We’re the United States of America
We’re 50 strong and proud
If you want to learn about us
Then Help and sing out loud

State Capitals Song
State Capitals Song by
This song is intended to help children memorize the state capitals of the 50 states of America.
The capitals of the United States are expected to be learned by all American school children. We have deliberately tried to cycle through the states in a fairly obvious geographical order -- with a few small jumps to enable the lyrics to have a nice rhyme and rhythm.
We have set the lyrics to what we hope is catchy but unobtrusive music to aid in the memorization process.
Even for children and adults who don't live in the USA, an awareness of the 50 capital cities and states is an advantage.
Please feel free to give us any feedback with regards to pronunciation of the capitals and states in the comments section. As will be clear from a quick listen we are not actually from America, but we hope that each state and capital city has been pronounced correctly -- despite not being said with an American accent!
