The ruins of Paliorema Sulfur Mine on the Greek island of Milos are remnants of an important period of industrial history. While visiting last year, the remote location of the ruins eluded me and I eventually gave up. This year however, it’s one of my main determined destinations. Abandoned by 1958, today the buildings are in a rather desolate state with most roofs missing, thus exposing the machinery, which largely remained in place, to the elements.

Sulphur mines-Milos
I went to the old sulphur mines of Milos, a bay with crystal clear waters and yellowish pebbles, colored by the sulphur. Its a combination between the mystery of the abandoned mines and the geological beauty.

Sulfur mine Milos
Paliorema in Greek denotes the unfriendly river. But don't let the name frighten you. It's a worth visiting place, not only for the scenery and the installations of the old sulfur mines still preserved, but mainly to assess the working and living conditions experienced by the workers there; people, whom today we would consider real heroes.

A NOTE TO MY FUTURE SELF. After weeks of being saturated in spectacular, all of this spectacle will soon come to an end. And like years before… once I’m away from all of this I always remember the geographical place but I absolutely forget the ethereal feeling. So after spending the day at the ruins of Paliorema Sulfur Mine on the Greek island of Milos, I make a video message to my future self to not forget about a promise to return.
It’s then time to speed back in my red Suzuki rental over the rough and rocky terrain to the peaceful and quaint fishing village of Pollonia for the sensational setting of the sun.

Milos, Greece - Thiorichia - AtlasVisual
Milos Video Map:
In Thiorichia there are several examples of a typical old mine and indeed the 1930s were this mine's glory years. All the rusty transportation facilities, the sulfur mining galleries, the deserted offices, tools and miscellaneous items are available to see. The sulfur and rust have tinted the whole region of Thiorichia including the beach with earthy bright colors of browns, reds, and yellows. The mine in Paliorema ceased operation in the late 1960s.

Thiorihio - The Abandoned Mine and Paliorema beach
Paliorema is the strangest beach of the Milos island, considering it is the place where the abandoned mine Thiorihio rises up. Instead of trees and beach facilities, you will be surrounded by old mining wagons, tools and parts. The sea around the shore is deep, it was used for a pier from which ships were loaded with sulfur and other minerals from the mine. The atmosphere is very weird, making it an unique spot, though not very suitable for a beach. During the summer it is quite windy due to the constant Meltemi wind.

Milos, Greece - Shipwreck, beauty and mystique
Milos (in Greek, Μήλος) , is a volcanic Greek island in the Aegean Sea, just north of the Sea of Crete. Milos is the southwesternmost island in the Cyclades group.
The island is famous for the statue of Aphrodite (the Venus de Milo, now in the Louvre), and also for statues of the Greek god Asclepius (now in the British Museum) and the Poseidon and an archaic Apollo in Athens. The Municipality of Milos also includes the uninhabited offshore islands of Antimilos and Akradies. The combined land area is 160.147 km² and the 2001 census population was 4,771 inhabitants.
Natural resources:
Bentonite, perlite, pozzolana and small quantities of kaolin are actively collected via strip mine or open-pit mine techniques in Milos and sold all over the world. In the past, baryte, sulfur, millstones and gypsum were also mined; in fact, Pliny notes that Milos was the most abundant source of sulfur in the ancient world.[9] In ancient times the alum of Milos was reckoned next to that of Egypt (Pliny xxxv. 15 [52]). The Melian earth was employed as a pigment by ancient artists. Milos was a source of obsidian during the Neolithic ages for the Aegean and Mediterranean. Orange, olive, cypress, tamarisk, juniper (Juniperus oxycedrus) and arbutus trees grow throughout the island, which, however, is too dry to have any profusion of vegetation. Vines, cotton and barley are the main crops.
The beaches of Milos Island:
There are about 70 beaches on Milos Island, Hivadolimni Beach is the longest beach of the island about 1 kilometre. The rest of the beaches are starting from (North): Sarakiniko Beach, Papafragas, Kapros, Pachena, Alogomantra, Konstantinos, Mitakas, Mantrakia, Firopotamos, Nerodafni, Lakida, Plathiena, Fourkovouni, Areti, Pollonia, Gourado and Filakopi. (South): Firiplaka, Paliochori, Provatas, Tsigrado, Agia Kyriaki, Psaravolada, Kleftiko, Gerontas, Gerakas, Agios Sostis, Mouchlioti, Katergo, Spathi, Firligos, Pialothiafes, Kalamos, Krotiraki, Psathi, Svoronou and Sakelari. (West): Agios Ioannis, Cave of Sikia, Agathia, Triades and Ammoudaraki. (East): Voudia, Thalassa, Paliorema, Tria Pagidia and Thiafes. (In the Bay Area): Hivadolimni, Lagada, Papikinou, Fatourena, Klima, Skinopi and Patrikia. The North and South and the bay beaches are tourists attraction. The east beaches are very quiet and the west are also quiet and lonesome beaches.
